Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

saffuna: "Yo la tengo!" From the 62 Mets.

In "The Glory of the Times," one of the players, can't remember the name, played rightfield with Dummy Hoy in center.

Their arrangement was that if Hoy wanted to take the fly he would sort of grunt out something like Chewbacca. If he didn't make any noise, the rightfielder was supposed to take it.

Penguincw: < TB fans yelling Got It distracts Tigers players. >

Verbal interference? Well, I'd be pretty angry if that happened to my team, even though it's not as bad as a fan in the front row blowing a whistle at an NBA game (which has happened before).

I love how Ausmus secretly takes shots at Tampa: < "He said the sparse crowd at Tropicana Field (the announced crowd was 12,281)..." >, < "Most of the time, when you have a decent-sized crowd,..." > (although still valid points).

saffuna: Oops. Correct title is "The Glory of Their Times." A brilliant book. Some of the individual stories told by ex-players would make outstanding short stories.

Devastating blow for the Giants, although I think they have enough depth to cover for MadBum while he's gone (even if it's only 2 starts).

While a lot of teams will enjoy Bumgarner's absence (even if it's only 2), he is a fun player to watch, on the mound and at the plate. I hope he recovers quickly.

  saffuna: Something happening in Cincinnati....

Yes, 7-4 Cubs in the TOP of the second.

Five home runs already, including a Rizzo grand slam.

Could be one of those 15-12 games.

And it mattered in the end, as it took the Jays 'til extras to win.

Meanwhile, Kershaw and the Dodgers leading the Giants 2-1 currently, in a game MadBum would've started.

So they score 13 on Sunday and 19 last night. Baseball is wonderful.

Apr-27-17  Travis Bickle: Yo Phony, Damn, the Bears GM Ryan Pace outright blew the #3 pick!! Imbecile, Ryan Pace screwed up taking Mitchell Trubisky, QB, North Carolina.. There is an overabundance of defensive studs & even better quarterbacks than GM Pace selected.. Plus Pace already signed tampa's bum Mike Glennon for 15 mil. for a season..?

Not only did Screwhead Pace ruin the Bears draft taking an inexperienced QB, but he traded up with San Fran & lost picks!?? That is incredibly stupid!!! I would rather see Cubs GM Theo Epstein run the Bears draft. : O

A Bears team that finished 3-13 last season that needs eveything but a clip board holding QB!!

Well after this horrendous season I hope GM Pace & old man Marine talking jackass John Fox get the BOOT!!

Penguincw: Woo, Toronto gets its first series win of the year, right before April ends. The Nats also ended on a high note, scoring <23> (twenty-three) runs. And Thor started it, but left early, as the Mets' pitching staff continues to be plagued by injuries, year after year.

perfidious: <Jim/saffuna....And did the A's win 103 games in 2002) because of the great offense Beane put together? The team scored 800 runs, 8th in the American League. Average at best....>

Given that cavernous park, not really; that is above average under the circumstances.

<....And opponents scored 654 runs, the second-fewest in the league. So the team's success is more pitching/defense than offense.>

Teams playing in Oakland should be built with the emphasis on pitching and defence, while having a power hitter, even with a low batting average, who can uppercut the ball and stroke flies into the stands is also good--just not a line-drive type, whose numbers will get killed by any California stadium.

Ask Wade Boggs about that.

saffuna: If I remember, my point was that "Moneyball" focused excessively on a couple of players found to plug in for Giambi and Damon, while almost completelly ignoring the tremendous homegrown starting pitching.

The dimensions of the Oakland Coliseum aren't that large. It's just that the ball does not carry at night.
