Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

May-31-10  A.G. Argent: Czar, an amazing outing by Scherzer yesterday. In 5 1/3 innings, 17 outs with 14 of them srikeouts. 2 K's shy of Lolich's club record. Averaging 95 mph with his fastball. So why the hell did Leyland pull him with one out in the 6th?!?

Phony Benoni: <A.G. Argent> Scherzer had just walked a hitter and hit another, and was already getting close to 120 pitches. Leyland probably felt no need to press his luck, especially with a comfortable lead and a relatively inexperienced pitcher.

The walk was a close call on a 3-2 pitch. Had Scherzer struck out that hitter to finish the 6th with #15, I'm pretty sure he would have come out for the 7th.

Of course, in the old days--or with a more established pitcher--there's no way he would have come out. Verlander, for one, would have been left in.

May-31-10  Jim Bartle: "In 5 1/3 innings, 17 outs with 14 of them srikeouts."

Reminds me of the stories I read as a kid that Rube Waddell would call in all the fielders to sit around the infield while he struck out the side.

And I see the Tigers cut Dontrelle. I suspect there's a lot of story there, especially about people being able to perform under pressure. I get the idea he suffers from anxiety attacks (I do, too), and that can really affect the ability to play. It happens a few times, in golf, baseball, tennis--in fact I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.

keypusher: <jimbartle> I think the changes you mention came in 1978, not 1972 -- 1977 was the 1968 of NFL football, so to speak, so the league felt like it had to do something.

Agree with you re anxiety. I can't imagine the pressure of performing in front of 50,000 people. That's why I'd want to play for the Tigers. <rimshot>

Jun-01-10  Jim Bartle: I missed that Superbowl, Pittsburgh over the Rams. The one I remember is the previous year, Pittsburgh 35 Dallas 31. A really exciting game, with Dallas not giving up when losing 35-17. Bradshaw was 17-30 for 318 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Unfortunately that was also the game the great end Jackie Smith dropped the easy pass in the end zone, possibly costing Dallas the game. Now that was a case of pure nerves.

One of the great moments in basketball history. :-)

As I recall, the Magic hook shot was made possible because moments earlier, a couple Celtic players who went for a rebound interfered with each other and ended up dropping the ball out of bounds. That gave the Lakers another shot...

chancho: <YouRang> Glad you found that a great moment. :-) I think Mychal Thompson hacked McHale and the ball went out of bounds as Parish and McHale went after it, but I could be wrong...
Jun-02-10  benjinathan: <Phony Benoni> Thanks to you I decided to watch a baseball game last night after years of abstinance (I was once one of the world's biggest fans).

Jays up 3 in the top of the ninth. "Ace" reliever on to finish it off. 5, count em, 5 walks later and a ninth inning rally that just falls short, and its over. Jays lose. Jays lose.

Jun-02-10  YouRang: <chancho> About that rebound, you can judge for yourself:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lduA...

The rebound occurs at about 5:00 in the video. It looks like Thompson was right behind Parish and McHale and may have had a hand in it.

Perhaps Thompson is the unsung hero. ;-)

Jun-02-10  Jim Bartle: I know it's easy to re-check afterward, and after all Magic did hit the shot, but as he went up to shoot Kareem was standing all alone beside the basket, ready for a pass and dunk.

Even the batter knew he was out.

Jun-02-10  chessmoron: Can it be overturned even though the game is over?
Jun-02-10
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: Probably not. There are precedents for overturning misinterpretations of the rules (for example, the Pine Tar Game), but an umpire's judgment is irreversible except in replay situations (such as home run calls).

Unless they can somehow say that Joyce misinterpreted the rules about "out" and "safe".
