Dec-17-10 | | Jim Bartle: Here's an example of what bugs me about network sports commentators: At the start of the second half of the Heat-Knicks game Mark Jackson said, "The Big Three have played well, scoring 45 of their 57 points. But they're going to need some help from the rest of the team in the second half." Sure, they scored almost all the points, but they also took almost all the shots (35 of 43). Hard to score if somebody else is shooting every time. Jackson is also the guy who can't say "shoot the ball," "pass the ball," "win this game," etc. It's always, every time, "shoot the basketball," "pass the basketball," and "win this basketball game." Ugh. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Perhaps Mr. Jackson needs to remind himself what kind of game he's watching. Still, that doesn't bug me as much as the mindless cliché, particularly when it's expressed illogically. My classic in this category is "That's two straight consecutive victories in a row!" Which reminds me that one of my Facebook friends heard a good one the other day on the 6 PM news: <"What you eat for dinner may kill you! Details at 10!"> |

Dec-18-10 | | crawfb5: <PB> *Very* special thanks for that link. Even with the spotty coverage, the <New York Recorder> had the missing game #2 I needed: http://www.chessarch.com/excavation... Of course, the score between about moves 5-10 are scrambled for Black, but I'm pretty sure I reconstructed the correct order based on what Showalter played in game #4, where he varied with 12...Re8 instead of 12...Red8, which is what note (c) recommended: [Event "US ch rematch"]

Dec-20-10 | | Jim Bartle: I was watching a preview show for the NFL, and one of the announcer said to a partner, "Think of an imaginary fantasy league..." Fantasy leagues are not enough. Now they want us wondering about imaginary fantasy leagues. |

Dec-20-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <JB> Someone needs to compile of list of these idiotic quotes. Though I can understand why he said it. For aficionados, fantasy leagues are reality, and doing well proves that you are knowledgable about football. Faugh! The only thing winning at fantasy football proves is that you are good at playing fantasy football. |

Dec-20-10 | | Jim Bartle: "Someone needs to compile of list of these idiotic quotes." I'm watching Monday Night Football, and I think I could fill a few pages with quotes from Jaworski and Gruden. They make so many blindingly obvious or overly generalized comments, in a tone that tries to make them seem like profound observations. On the other hand, there's none of that from Michaels and Collinsworth on Sunday Nights. They're excellent and informative without being overbearing. |

 | | Phony Benoni: I'm fulfilling my holiday dreams this year by totally vegging out. Instead of doing consructive work, I've been browsing through Charles Henry Stanley's chess column from the <Albion>, circa 1850. The columns consist mostly of a single problem. Most are crude by today's standards, being of the "sac-sac-sac-mate" variety, featuring numerous checks, forced Black moves, and many solutions. But some are kind of cute, and might stump a few people today for a second or two. From December 30, 1848, a <Mate in 4> by "F.L. of Troy." click for larger view |

Dec-23-10 | | crawfb5: I just found the last of the 1895 Showalter-Lipschutz games. Here's a comment from the <NY Evening Post> on game 11, a 95-move effort (game 13 at 112 moves was longer): <As expected, Lipschutz won the adjourned game from Showalter, but he played the ending in so bungling a fashion that it took him two more sittings to accomplish the win. After the conclusion of the game Showalter severely complained of the analyzing on the part of club members, and it is likely that henceforth the match will be played in a secluded room with nobody present but the principals, the umpires, and the referee. Showalter, after having resigned, remarked to Lipschutz: "If I had had your position I would have won sooner," to which Lipschutz pointedly replied: "If I had had your position I would have resigned long ago."> |

 | | Phony Benoni: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/1035... <NCAA suspends Pryor, 4 others at Ohio State> <"Five Ohio State University football players -- including quarterback Terrelle Pryor, a Jeannette High School graduate -- have been suspended for the first five games next season for selling awards and receiving improper benefits in 2009, the NCAA announced Thursday..."The players are eligible for the Sugar Bowl. Kevin Lennon, NCAA vice president of academic and membership affairs, said in a statement that the players did not receive adequate instruction in the rules regarding receiving benefits during the time the violations were committed, which was one of several factors considered in allowing the players to participate in the bowl game."> I think it is very noble and fair-minded of the NCAA to allow the players to participate in the bowl game. Certainly I would never suggest that they are allowing them to play in the big money game, and skip the rinky-dinks paydays early next year. I'm not that cynical. |

Dec-24-10
 | | OhioChessFan: I am a little surprised and disappointed Tressel isn't sitting them anyway. |
|
Dec-24-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <OCF> If they erred because "they didn't receive adequate instruction", I'm surprised Tressel didn't get suspended as well. But that's such a hard thing to do. There's pressure not only from your own university, but from the fans, the NCAA, the media. It's inevitable when the whole purpose of the system in not to crown a true national champion, but to make money and increase television ratings. But this is ironic. I've tried to be calm and dispassionate all year long, and here I am being a grump for Christmas. Let the whole thing rest for a bit. It's not really important. May these days be a time of peace, joy, and thankfulness for you and yours. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <Travis> I hope the Bears can beat Green Bay next week and clinch a first round bye. Then I won't have to listen to that fight song for a whole week! <keypusher> Three in a row for the Lions! And I hereby take back anything I've said about the officiating at Lions' games this year. At the end of the game, deep in Lions' territory with about 15 seconds left and no time outs, Miami completed a short pass but the receiver couldn't get out of bounds. Miami sprinted to the line to spike the ball. They were in formation for a good five seconds before an official realized, "Hey! We forgot to put the ball back in play!" By the time they finally got the ball set, the clock had run out. Maybe the Lions really have turned the corner when their opponents start losing games like that. |

P.S. The Bears Fight Song is a beautiful song LOL! |
