Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: The dome-stadium Minnesota Vikings have had more postponements this year that the Minnesota Twins did playing outdoors. Wusses.
Dec-29-10  Jim Bartle: Streaking San Antonio had a big game against the Lakers last night, but Duncan and Ginobili had terrible games, shooting a combined 4-19.

No problem, though: San Antonio 97 Los Angeles 82.

Dec-29-10  Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> JB Dem' Bulls are on the improve! ; P
Dec-29-10  Jim Bartle: From a Posnanski column, commenting on Roger Federer: "he was only the second player, after Andre Agassi, to win all four major championships on three different surfaces; Nadal has since become the third."

Actually I think Mats Wilander did as well, but what really irritates me about comments like that is that they're deceptive. A third surface (hardcourts) was first used in a major at the 1978 US Open, so none of the greats from Laver going back in time ever had the chance. The writer should have noted that fact. Anybody think Laver, Rosewall, Gonzalez, Kramer, Budge, etc. wouldn't have done it if they'd had the chance?

You see that sort of thing all the time, especially using stats which have only been counted since a certain year. You hear this guy has the most blocks ever, when Russell or Wilt would have had more if somebody was counting. How many steals did Walt Frazier have? How many sacks did Deacon Jones have?

Phony Benoni: <JB> Looked at Wikipedia, and they give Jimmy Connors as accomplishing this "feat" as well as Wilander.

Point well taken. Another area would be lifetime baseball postseason statistics. It's silly to compare players from before and after 1969.

Dec-29-10  Jim Bartle: Connors never won the French Open, the only major tournament on clay, so unless they're counting different types of hardcourts as different surfaces, that's wrong.

On postseason baseball, you see Derek Jeter or whoever passing Mickey Mantle in this or that category, but at least usually (not always) the announcer or writer acknowledges the differing conditions.

Dec-29-10  hms123: <Jim Bartle>

From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_Open_(tennis)

Surface Grass - outdoors
(1881–1974)
Clay - outdoors
(1975–1977)
DecoTurf - outdoors
(1978–present)

Connors won in 1976 (among other years) so he did win on clay.

Dec-29-10  Jim Bartle: I stand corrected! My mistake! Connors won the US Open over Borg in 1976 on the green clay. I'd forgotten about those three years. Connors was in all three finals in that period, losing to Orantes in 1975 and Vilas in 1977 in addition to defeating Borg.
Dec-29-10  hms123: <JB> I thought I remembered that the US Open had been played on clay, but had forgotten exactly when. I had no idea whether Connors won it on clay until I looked.

Dec-29-10  crawfb5: <Phony Benoni: I'm fulfilling my holiday dreams this year by totally vegging out. Instead of doing consructive work, I've been browsing through Charles Henry Stanley's chess column from the <Albion>, circa 1850.>

Is that from the Fulton site? I think there are a few Stanley-Turner games missing. I also have no info on round numbers, although these games were played so fast it probably doesn't much matter.

In related news, I just submitted the games from the 1895 Showalter-Lipschutz match.

Hope your holidays continue to be relaxing.

Dec-29-10  Jim Bartle: Borg seems to be just pitty-pattying the ball in that US Open link. He's got his strings so tight for control that he has no power. That's for clay, but compare it to the sound off of Borg's racket in this at Wimbledon, for instance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVfF...

Completely different, the strings are looser. Of course Borg's biggest problem is just has to calm down some, be less emotional.

Dec-30-10  Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni> Phony that was leaked on purpose to throw the cheeseheads defense off. Cutler is going to be slinging em' deep like Joe Willie Namath used to! ; P
Dec-31-10  Jim Bartle: I'd like to talk about that high school play seriously. I really consider it unsporting.

The quarterback was walking toward the referee with the ball, totally unprotected. Say one of the defensive players had just clocked him, hit him with a vicious tackle. According to the offensive team, it was a play so that would have been legal.

But you just know that if he'd been tackled the coach of the offensive team would have been on the field screaming that the defense had hit his defenseless quarterback who only wanted to ask the referee something. Just plain unethical play.

<Magnusch> Of course I'm interested in the answer to the helpmate. I don't want to work on it for two years!

Phony Benoni: Big Ten got skunked today, going 0-5 (Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Penn State, Northwestern). At least Iowa and Illinois won earlier, and Ohio State plays later.

Which probably shows that, when 8 of your 11 teams make bowl games, parity can equal mediocrity.

Jan-02-11  chesssantosh: i m extremely pleased to drop my few words in your forum to express sincere thanks for your hard work on POTD and other stuffs as well.i have,in fact, few kibitzer in my favorite list and you are of course one of them.i find your way of thinking and understanding of chess is pretty high.but when i came to know that u r about 1950 rated i was very surprised.i think u deserve to be 2400 rated.wud u please tell why is this so?don't u play tournaments anymore?

but anyway your explanatory comments are always useful for improvement.thanking you once again

jessicafischerqueen: Oh yes and one more thing- I'm certain you already know this but I didn't.

Today I accidentally read the story of how the "Benoni" got its name, and what "Benoni" actually means.

What a wonderful- and sad- story it is too.

Jan-02-11  Jim Bartle: Yes, the Big 10 had a terrible day. Of the five games, four Big 10 teams lost really badly (Alabama 49 Michigan St. 7?), and Wisconsin lost the biggest one, the Rose Bowl. At least that one was close.

In the Rose it seemed to me Wisconsin could have run up the middle all day, as they often opened big holes. But they kept on running outside or trying to pass, and Texas Christian stopped those pretty well.
