Jan-02-11 | | A.G. Argent: You have any remnants of allegiance to the PAC 10, Jim, in pulling for Oregon? |
Jan-02-11 | | Jim Bartle: I ALWAYS pull for the Pac 10 in bowl games. Even USC. I must say this national championship game comes way too late, though. Except for fans of the two teams, it seems like an afterthought, a week after New Years. This game should be on January 2 or 3. Stanford people weren't too upset about losing to Oregon, by the way. They figured the team played well, but Oregon was just way too good. Just too bad neither team got to play in the Rose Bowl. |

 | | Phony Benoni: One of the big stories around these parts is the possibility of Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh taking over the Michigan program. Last night, one of our Angry Not-So-Young Sports Commentators did a rant asking what U-M was waiting for. "Sign the guy, already!" Good grief. It should be obvious Harbaugh has stipulated that no announcement be made until Stanford's bowl game is over. |
Jan-03-11 | | Jim Bartle: The last time we lost a really good coach was with Bill Walsh. But he moved up to our local NFL team and did all right there, so there were few complaints. Nobody's going to be real angry if (when ) Harbaugh leaves. People are grateful for what he accomplished. Did you know he played high school football right across the road from Stanford Stadium at Palo Alto High? Can't be more than 500 yards between the two fields. Harbaugh going to Michigan isn't close to a sure thing, as the 49ers may want him as well. |
Jan-03-11 | | Jim Bartle: Classic Stanford from way back! Quarterback in his own end zone, tries a desperation pass to avoid a safety, the ball's batted back toward the back of the end zone right at a Stanford lineman. Who catches it!! Safety. If he'd just let it drop, they could have punted from the five. Aaaaargh. And what's a lineman doing standing alone back there while the quarterback is getting sacked. And they were in that position in the first place because the punt returner chose to catch a punt at the two rather than let it go into the end zone. I mean, that takes me right back to my college days. |
Jan-03-11 | | A.G. Argent: Lions - 6 and 10. Quite the upswing, Czar, even with all the injuries. You gotta be a bit enthused for next year, I would think. Respectability, if not better, very much in the mix. Gotta be a bit refreshing, eh? The doormat thing finally morphing beyond the damage of the Millen years. |
Jan-03-11
 | | Phony Benoni: <A.G. Argent> Lots of real optimism indeed. In fact, if they don't make a playoff run next year, there will be a lot of grumbling. But the team definitely seems to be going in a positive direction. If there is a next year, of course. Seems to be a lot of heavy betting on an NFL lockout. The big question right now is whether Matthew Stafford can remain healthy. He's shown signs of franchise quarterback potential, but has missed much of his two years with injuries--and worse yet, recurring injuries. By the way, all is not forgiven with Matt Millen. One of our local sportscasters runs a quick clip he calls "Kiss of Death". It consists of Millen praising a player or coach and predicting great things for them in the future. |
Jan-03-11 | | Jim Bartle: Oh man, these NFL announcers at the Orange Bowl. I'm glad I'm not playing a drinking game where you have to take a shot every time Gruden or Jaworski mentions the offensive coordinator, the defensive coordinator, the coaching staff or the head coach. It's every other play, I swear. You'd think it was chess and players are just pieces moved around by the coaches. |
Jan-04-11 | | playground player: <Jim Bartle> Not having television anymore, I'm not privileged to enjoy the fine art of blather in the broadcast booth. But then I also don't have to endure cialis and viagra commercials, either. John Hadl, George Blanda, Joe Kapp, Fred Biletnikoff... I miss you guys. |

 | | Phony Benoni: And in forty years, our grandchildren will be longing for the good old days of real football players like Peyton Manning and Brett Favre and Tom Brady and Wes Welker. There is no era so bad that it will not someday be remembered with nostalgia. |
Jan-05-11 | | Travis Bickle: There ya go Phony putting things in perspective once again! ; P |

 | | OhioChessFan: <JB: Yes, the Big 10 had a terrible day. Of the five games, four Big 10 teams lost really badly (Alabama 49 Michigan St. 7?), and Wisconsin lost the biggest one, the Rose Bowl. At least that one was close.> Northwestern lost by 7, Penn State had a great chance to win a game on their last drive but had a pick-6 late to lose by 12? something like that. Michigan lost games that bad in the Big 10. The one that shocked me was Michigan State. I knew they wouldn't win, but still. I have no clue how Alabama lost 2 games, but there's still no way MSU should have suffered that kind of beatdown. A team from Ohio looked really good last night. |
Jan-05-11 | | Jim Bartle: Yes, just read that Ohio State had a big win.
Unfortunately Ohio State seems to have gone the way so common in the South: NCAA violations. Five guys suspended part of next year, though still allowed to play in the bowl game. |
Jan-05-11 | | playground player: <There is no era so bad that it will not someday be remembered with nostalgia.> I hope you're right, Mr. Benoni. It's just awfully hard to imagine anybody saying, "Remember how wonderful rap music was?" |
Jan-05-11 | | benjinathan: <It's just awfully hard to imagine anybody saying, "Remember how wonderful rap music was?"> Googled it- a review of "Old School Rap":
One of the best purchases I made in some time. A selection of some of the best songs from the Old School era, the 80s. This was the time when rappers were not everywhere, when hip hop was still a distinctly new music genre, when rappers were not smitten with their “rich douchebag” syndrome. If you’re feeling nostalgic, or if you just plain love old school rap (like I do), then this is definitely one album you should check out: |

Jan-05-11
 | | Phony Benoni: I have long thought "Ball of Confusion" by the Four Tops was a kind of precursor to the rap style. But then, I know nothing about popular music history beyond The Big Bacher, Eddie Grieg and the Mountain Kings, and Tony Vivaldi and the Four Seasons. |
Jan-05-11 | | Travis Bickle: I have often thought what would have psycho Roberta Alomar done if the umpire had spit in his face? I think the umpire would be D.O.A. |
Jan-05-11
 | | Phony Benoni: Or, for that matter, Wolfman Amadeus Mozart, George Fred and His Too-Hot-To-Handel Band, or Tricky Dick Wagner. Please. Don't get me started. |

Jan-05-11 | | Jim Bartle: TD: The spitting incident cost Alomar with a maximum of 10% of voters. He got 90% of the vote. |
