Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

keypusher: It's funny to come from the Rogoff page, where everyone is talking about Hitler, and have your eyes light on the phrase <Spahn was all about control>. Surely that's unfair to Warren, I thought to myself.

jessicafischerqueen: <keypusher> speaking of funny, there's a coincidental, but striking resonance in your post here-

<George Spahn> is the man who welcomed the Manson Family on to his ranch, and of course Charlie was a big, big fan of Adolf Hitler. Talked about him all the time.

This unintentional connection is probably also unfair to <Warren Spahn>.

Phony Benoni: <keypusher> Spahn was more of a finesse pitcher who relied on mixing his pitches and a deceptive pitching motion. He did lead the NL in strikeouts four years in a row, but he was pitching around 300 innings a year and never reached 200 strikeouts in a season.

As a rookie, he was being warmed up by veteran catcher Ernie Lombardi, and threw him one of his best fastballs. Lombardi threw it back harder than it came in.

The SABR biography at Retrosheet has other anecdotes of interest. Funny guy.

perfidious: Bill James has written about Lombardi in some of his works.

Strong as a bull, but couldn't run at all. It's possible he was the slowest player in major league history.

keypusher: <PB> Thanks, that was a great article. I didn't know a lot of that, but the Remagen part was especially good. <JFQ> Pretty strange...

Yes, James' almanac has a long article about Lombardi...pretty rough last 30 years that man had.

May-14-11  Jim Bartle: Spahn certainly had some great sayings. I like "I saw your first, Willie, and now I've seen your 500th."
May-14-11  Jim Bartle: Quick shot of Lombardi at about :50 of this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kq8y...

I find these "When It Was a Game" videos incredibly frustrating, especially the first one where I don't recognize most of the players.. Great footage, but the narration is over-the-top sentimental, and takes the place of actually identifying the players, where they were, the year, the situation, etc.

May-15-11

Phony Benoni: Weep not for the Dodgers. They've been on the other side of games like this:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

Note that the winning pitcher was the same Chad Billingsley who lost the one-hitter yesterday. And, just to save <Jim Bartle> the trouble:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

May-15-11  Jim Bartle: That's interesting. I wonder how many eight-inning complete game no-hitters there have been. The team pitching the no-hitter has to lose, and be the visiting team.

Phony Benoni: According to Wikipedia (of course) there have been four. Besides Weaver's effort, there's the famous Andy Hawkins game:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

This one by Matt Young from 1992:

And one by Silver King in 1890--no box score available.

perfidious: <Phony Benoni> How well I remember listening to Young's piece of futility, which doesn't even count as an official no-no per the Elias Sports Bureau's present-day rules.

Phony Benoni: Found a box score for the Silver King game, though I can't figure out how to get there directly. Use this link:

http://eagle.brooklynpubliclibrary....

Search for <June 22, 1890>, and it's on page two. The narrative says one hit, the box score says none. From the description, it certainly sounds like an error.

May-15-11  Jim Bartle: Why wouldn't Young's game be considered a no-hitter? Because he only pitched eight innings?
May-15-11
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: Yes. By current definitions, a no-hitter must last at least nine innings, and continue for the entire game.

perfidious: <Phony Benoni> Another memory of the night before the Matt Young no-hitter that never took place: the night before, I went to see Moody Blues play at the draughty old Memorial Auditorium in Burlington, Vermont. When I lived in Burlington in the 1970s, they had some name acts play there, as well as at the university.
May-15-11  Jim Bartle: I thought the Moody Blues only played on Tuesday afternoon.

perfidious: <Jim> Change of pace and all that.
May-16-11  crawfb5: I finished proofreading the cable match article and moved it out into main article space:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-...

We'll see how it fares out in the cold, cruel world.

I found a few <very> minor errors in your game collection:

1) Under <Trenchard>, his score was +2 <-2> =1

2) Also under <Trenchard>, you have two <r>s in Galbreath

3) Under <Stadleman>, his score was +0 <-1 =2>

I found it very useful. Thanks for doing the collection. I link to it at the bottom under "external links."

May-17-11  Jim Bartle: So this Mazzaro gives up 14 runs in two innings to Cleveland. You'd think three hard-hit balls would have been caught in that time to hold the score down a little.

But where was the manager? Did Mazaaro set his shoes on fire? This actually would happen fairly often except that managers get ineffective pitchers out of there.

Maybe Mazzaro was taking one for the team. Game lost, save the rest of the bullpen for another day.

I gave up ten runs in an inning once in a Little League game. I committed two errors as well, but the ump (father of a player on the other team) would not call a strike.

Actually when I was nine I gave up sixteen runs in an inning. That team named me MVP. In my defense I hit two batters with pitches which were strikes.
