Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Had to plug that one into Google Translate. Good thing they've added Jamesian to their list of languages:

"Rivers balls fielders hits at hard. Speed steals poorly, Dave Kingman not."

Jun-02-11  Jim Bartle: "Speed steals poorly..."

That was true: http://www.baseball-almanac.com/pla...

Jun-02-11  Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni> Dr Benoni who would you choose as the best leadoff hitter you ever seen? I choose Ricky Henderson. Power in the 1 hole and speed on the bases!

perfidious: Another vote here for Henderson.

Molitor and Raines were also great.

Jun-02-11  Jim Bartle: Henderson, no doubt. Wade Boggs, Tim Raines, Pete Rose.

Rickey to John Olerud: "I used to play with another guy who wore a helmet all the time, too."

Olerud: "That was me, Rickey."

Jun-03-11  hms123: <Phony B> Have you seen this catch?

http://pittsburgh.pirates.mlb.com/v...

Jun-03-11  Travis Bickle: Dr Benoni, I found impressive stats on Ricky Henderson, not only does he have the most stolen bases (1406) in MLB history but Henderson surpassed Babe Ruth for most walks (2190) and surpassed Ty Cobb for most runs scored (2295)! Plus like Bobby Fischer, Ricky was born in Chicago! ; P

Phony Benoni: <hms123> Definitely Maysian. One of our local sportscasters has shown that highlight the last couple of nights. Calls it <The Catch of the Year>. At least till next week, I assume.

<Travis> Rickey Henderson was born in Chicago? Well, then there can be no doubt.

I don't want to make any jokes about this. I don't even want to think about any jokes about this.

Jun-03-11  Jim Bartle: Sorry, PB, too late.

Uecker: One year I made a real contribution to our pennant. Carson: What did you do?
Uecker: I got hepatitis.
Carson: How'd you get that?
Uecker: The trainer gave me a shot.

Jun-03-11  TheFocus: Man, I loved watching Uecker when he appeared on Carson. Always worth a good giggle. He'd have Carson rolling.
Jun-03-11  Mozart72: <Phony Benoni> You are welcomed to my chessforum.
Jun-03-11  Travis Bickle: I remember Uecker on Carson 1 night and he was in top form! Uke says to carson, "ya know any ball player can go 3 for 4. It's the guys who are really hung over that can play both games of a doubleheader that separate the men from the boys", LOL!
Jun-03-11  Travis Bickle: Only for you Dr Benoni would I research this material.

  jessicafischerqueen: Hello!

I can't seem to find this gentleman in the database here:

http://db.chessmetrics.com/CM2/Play...

As you can see, he had a rather lengthy career in Yugoslavian chess, so I'm hoping there's some alternate spelling at our site?

<Dragoljub Ciric>

"The name's Ciric. Dragoljub Ciric."

  jessicafischerqueen: Thanks <Big>.

Bloody middle initials. Shouldn't they make a search engine that coughs up a variety of results to choose from?

Do you think I should send a letter to my Congressman?

Might be futile since I live in Canada and I'm not even there at the moment.

Jun-04-11  crawfb5: <Jess> Try just the last name. That's all I ever enter in the home page search.

For this one I tried the Player Directory because I thought we might have a different spelling. It works if they have enough games (16-17 or thereabouts) in the database.

Jun-04-11  playground player: <Jim Bartle> Ricky Henderson: hard to think of a better leadoff man, but for some reason he had a talent for cheesing off the management.

A friend of mine, working for a little one-horse radio station, went to Yankee Stadium one day to try to get an interview with Albert Belle, who refused to talk. But Ricky Henderson spotted his predicament and talked him all around the park, treating him like the lead story writer for Sports Illustrated.

Not hard to see why he was always a fan favorite!

Jun-04-11  Jim Bartle: Oakland and Boston used 16 pitchers in today's extra-inning game. What's the record?
Jun-04-11

Phony Benoni: The record appears to be 20:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

Of course, games on the next-to-last day of the season with expanded rosters shouldn't count. Here's an 18-pitcher game from August, also involving the 2006 Cubs:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

Perhaps Dusty Baker was overmanaging a bit that year?

The American League record appears to be 18, also an extra-inning September game:

Jun-05-11  Jim Bartle: The managers had to ice their arms after that one, from waving to the bullpen so often.
