 | | Susan Freeman: But that is not fair. All the things I have posted with typos etc. and deleted. not a chance. I take them away and correct them. So many are just irrelevant. I have to consult my people. I still think if there is a thread with replies it should stay up. Otherwise posters can get the so called last word in and pick up their marbles and go . Of course they can anyway. A simple suggestion has turned into an ethical discussion. What fun |

| Sep-27-18 | | Boomie: Here is a record of the Wesley pages saved to the Wayback machine. You can find the deleted post and copy it. Aside from posting directions for using it, CG doesn't have to concern itself otherwise. https://web.archive.org/web/2016040... Here's a snapshot of the ever popular Rogoff page. https://web.archive.org/web/2013032... Instructions for using it:

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: Few deleted posts will be on Wayback; mostly in cases where a chessforum owner deleted them months or even years afterwards, or else when someone deliberately used Wayback to make sure a particular post would remain part of the record. Posts deleted shortly after being posted are very unlikely to show up in a Wayback snapshot. |

| Sep-27-18 | | Boomie: <SwitchingQuylthulg: Few deleted posts will be on Wayback> Doh! Another of my brilliancies goes down in flames. Of course, we aren't interested in the posts that are deleted shortly after posting. As Susan pointed out, those are almost all done by the author to rewrite them. So some relevant deleted posts may be in the archive. Perhaps by teaching people how to use the archive will allow them to save a page whenever they want. I'm still trying to find a way to unburden CG from this...heh. |
|
| Sep-27-18 | | zanzibar: Having the ability to edit a post is pretty basic (and sorely missing from <CG>). I like the way <ChessTempo> does it - you are free to edit or delete a post however you like, unlike there's a follow-up post. Then your post is frozen (and on <CT> you can't even delete it). . |

 | | Annie K.: <Perhaps by teaching people how to use the archive will allow them to save a page whenever they want.> Yes, <Boomie>, exactly what I was thinking too. <Switch :<At a minimum, though, all deleted posts (including those that share their reply ID with another post) should be permanently logged so they can be recovered by the administrators if necessary.>> Yes, this ability had always existed. :)
I may get back to this subject tomorrow, or this weekend. |

<Susan Freeman> Welcome to forum land! Maybe you already know this, but <Daniel> put two provisions in so that premium members could better manage their forums. If you open a forum, you can delete any post in there no matter how long it has been up. Also, if you put someone on "ignore," they can no longer post in your forum. I agree with <boomie> and <Annie> about using the Wayback Machine as a handy tool to preserve posts, should anyone want to do that. The instructions are super easy-
<Wayback Machine>: https://archive.org/web/ On the right hand side of the home page you see: <Save Page Now
http://
SAVE PAGE
Capture a web page as it appears now for use as a trusted citation in the future.> Just copy and paste the URL you want to save into the box, click on "Save Page Now" and it is done! Example, I just saved your forum as a "snap shot in time" for this exact time now: https://web.archive.org/web/2018092... Possibly the Wayback URL and a screenshot of the front page with a few instructions could be posted on the Premium Member's Guide page, so that all Premium members present past and future would be aware of this resource? |

 | | Susan Freeman: Aha Thank you |
|
| Sep-29-18 | | zanzibar: <Susan> - can you please ask <CG> not to strip out the TWIC PGN tags for the Olympiad? It loses all the team context for the tournament. In general, I think the <WhiteTeam/BlackTeam> and <WhiteFideId/BlackFideId> tags should never be stripped out. If you don't understand WTH I'm talking about, that's OK, just forward the request to Lee. . |

 | | chessgames.com: <zanzibar: <Susan> - can you please ask <CG> not to strip out the TWIC PGN tags for the Olympiad?> The script Dan wrote is NOT processing those tags at all currently, and never has, as far as I can tell. I'll try to make an adjustment to include them moving forward. Thanks for the observation... |

 | | chessgames.com: <zanzibar: [ignoring the team tags in an olympiad] loses all the team context for the tournament.> I can reimport this data once I make the code change, so it's not really "lost". Again, thanks for the cogent suggestion... |
|
| Sep-30-18 | | zanzibar: <chessgames.com> yes, thank for considering the addition. I think I should have added the <Board> tag as well, but I forget if TWIC uses the same convention as official site. (The Board number will reflect which team is considered as White, and which players are supposedly the strongest.) Anyways, the idea behind some tournaments is that they are team competitions, and so the leaderboards really should reflect team standings rather than individual play. Not sure if you want to consider changing the <CG> handling to also reflect this, but it's the idea behind the Olympiad and certain club competitions. Thanks again.

| Oct-06-18 | | crawfb5: <Susan Freeman: Now is the time, and this is the place to make a wish list of all the games you want to have uploaded. Any suggestions for improvements?> Game submissions has IMO been the feature of the site that has worked least well. Realistically, this has been a low enough priority that it's limped along. It's still probably low enough on the to-do list that it may be some time before it's improved. Be aware, however, that it's not necessarily just a few stray games here and there that users would like to submit. I did a recent survey of what is currently in the database for correspondence world championships 1-29 (Game Collection: 00000 --- meta correspondence world championship). It adds up to approximately 1700 missing games from this historically important series. This is an extreme example, but members often find missing games from under- or unrepresented events. Here are a couple of ideas I posted last month. I know <zanzibar> would love to see a bulk submission feature. <<chessgames.com: Game submissions were always a sporadic thing, and that's one place where there has always been room for improvement.>
Understated. :-) Daniel liked the idea of overhauling game submission and thus was reluctant to tinker with the current system. Unfortunately it was low enough on his list of priorities that he only talked about it. I finally got him to admit it was "vaporware" (his term).I don't think any regular game submitter realistically expects games to be added within a couple of days, but it seems some semi-automation and feedback would improve the process from the user's point of view. One problem from new submitters has been errors in the PGN or missing header information. They are often hand-typing information into a text editor (or even worse, directly into the PGN submission box), but that's a separate issue. It seems a preliminary evaluation of the game could be done without requiring staff time to see what's wrong (e.g., "We cannot accept your game submission because of illegal or ambiguous PGN/missing or improperly formatted player name/duplicates Game #xxxx/etc. If you can fix this problem, feel free to resubmit"). That feedback could be provided at the time of submission. Higher volume submitters are often sending in the missing games from tournament collections they are assembling. Currently, one must keep checking to see if the games are added and if not, after a reasonable (or even unreasonable) delay, asking if the games are still awaiting action, had some unspecified problem, or if they somehow fell between the cracks (which <has> happened, especially with bulk email submission). Maybe an automated email when/if the game is added to the database could be sent, which again shouldn't require staff time once it's set up. Just a couple of quick thoughts that probably would not require starting from scratch.> |

 | | Tabanus: Hi Susan, at Biographer Bistro (kibitz #18688), only two days before Daniel passed away, he posted that <Sargon hasn't done much work lately as he's involved in other matters, and we're working on training others to fill in, and I've been handling a lot of corrections lately. I'm sorry if some things are taking longer than normal.> I wonder about the "we're working on training others to fill in", as it seems to me that if the staff number is now reduced, there is little hope. For example, if Sargon is alone there, how can he now handle game submissions, etc. when he has not even found the time yet to add the games (which sonia91 recently asked about in the CG forum) from the Russian Superfinals (men and women's) 2018, the 9th Danzhou Super GM 2018, and the World Junior Championship (open and girls) 2018. CG also has the chance now to be the first in presenting historical events such as Maehrisch Ostrau (1933), Lodz (1938), Bad Harzburg (1938), Kemeri (1939), Ostend (1906), etc., because CG members are working on these events. They are just waiting to see if their game submissions will be processed. And these submission (of which some are sent, and some are not) are hundreds of games that can only be sent by mail to CG (and not one by one via the PGN Upload Utility). Correction slips: they have to be processed also in order to add new events to CG in a meaningful way. In short, my impression is that with Daniel no longer working day and night in front of the computer, CG needs at least one person to replace him, more likely 2 or 3 persons, in addition to Sargon. |

 | | Susan Freeman: Thanks for all the suggestions! We are getting some extra help and getting things improved. You all are correct in thinking Daniel worked day and night. Sargon is doing a super job, but I am lining up some more recruits. It is more of a passion than work but too much for one guy. I am looking at all ideas in detail. :) Thank you again |
