 | | The Caissars: Welcome to the 2017 Caissars! Here we'll be celebrating 2018 while looking back and choosing the best things in Chessgames of 2017. The categories for voting are:
<BEST AVATAR> — Who has the prettiest avatar?
<BEST USERNAME> — The best screen-name.
<MOST HELPFUL> — The one who always is there when you need them.
<MOST CONSTRUCTIVE> — The one who contributes the most to CG.
<FUNNIEST POSTER> — The one who always makes you laugh.
<BEST POST> — The best chess-related post.
<BEST OFFTOPIC POST> — The best post unrelated to chess.
<BEST GAME COLLECTION> — The best game collection.
<MOST INFORMED> — The one who's got all the facts at their fingertips.
<BEST HISTORIAN> — The King of the Biographer Bistro.
<PLAYER OF THE YEAR> — The chess player of note this year.
<BEST/WORST PUN> — The most laugh (groan) inducing pun.
<GAME OF THE YEAR> — The best game of 2017.
<MOVE OF THE YEAR> — The most amazing move of 2017.
You can cast your nominations/votes here: Caissars Voting Page. Note: When nominating a new entrant, you must provide the appropriate web address (URL). For example, if you think I have the best username, you would enter: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessuser?uname=The+Caissars When it comes to best move, you must supply the game AND the move number, like this: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1903246&m=22 If you have any questions about how to properly format a URL for a nomination, or how to use the form in general, please come here and either I or another helpful member will be sure to assist. The voting begins NOW — the votes will be tallied two weeks from today, on Wednesday January 17th. |

 | | OhioChessFan: Nominations are okay, but it's not accepting votes for the people you just nominated. |
|
Jan-03-18
 | | WannaBe: Also remove 2016 from second real paragraph and replace it with 2017. =)) |

 | | The Caissars: <it's not accepting votes for the people you just nominated.> Sorry about that, we're looking at the code right now. |
|
Jan-03-18
 | | chessgames.com: I can cast votes for nominees, but it's a little confusing in a few ways: (1) The total vote tally is not visible until January 17th so you won't see anybody's score grow larger. (2) The "approximate votes tallied" counter is sometimes off by one. (3) It does not check the box next to the nominee you voted for. Point #3 is probably the biggest source of confusion and we'll try to tackle that shortly. However, I do believe that clicking the checkbox next to a nomination will indeed set your vote. BTW, somebody nominated the illegal move by Inarkiev but the software had trouble with that. I fixed the URL and hacked the code so that it shows 27...Ne3+(!) properly. |

 | | chessgames.com: Also <BEST OFFTOPIC POST> wasn't appearing in the list, but it's there now. |
|
Jan-04-18
 | | The Caissars: We removed Kenneth S Rogoff (kibitz #255127) from <BEST POST> as it is now a nominee in <BEST OFFTOPIC POST> where it belongs. |
|
| Jan-04-18 | | WorstPlayerEver: <The Caissars> I am not going to run through all the posts at KSF and count them, but the link jumps to the top of the KSF page FYI (Android) |
|
Jan-04-18
 | | chessgames.com: <WorstPlayerEver> I assume you mean KSR. That's a known bug that happens with the post-link combined with some people's ignore lists and page boundaries. Or something. As a workaround you can read the post with Search Kibitzing on "improve the silence". |
|
| Jan-05-18 | | takchess: a favorite blast from the past thread which I just read has to do with known theory and the muzio gambit....Soren Jensen vs F Urkedal, 2013 |

 | | HeMateMe: <A general comment: With all the many talented people around here, what exactly is the point in voting for a person in a category they've already won? Most of the multi-winners are deserving, but I really don't get it.> 1) Indeed, it's a bore to see the same person win best home page or best game collection each year. Just pick something good, different than the previous year. 2) It would seem that CG.COM should put daily reminders in the Café to let people know what's going on, helpful links to data and categories, sample posts, that sort of thing. For example, who really knows who works in the bio bistro? How do we know who to vote for? 3) I'd love to see real life IM or GM players check in and comment, perhaps vote, if they can be persuaded to do so. |

 | | Penguincw: I also support the notion that once a <cg> user has won an award in a particular category, they should no longer be eligible to win it again, at least in the near future. Not sure about other categories (ex. Player of the Year). |

| Jan-06-18 | | TheFocus: <Penguincw: I also support the notion that once a <cg> user has won an award in a particular category, they should no longer be eligible to win it again, at least in the near future.> Certain categories would have to be exempt. Historian? Best Collection? Those two could very easily fall upon someone who does continuous good work and contributions. |

 | | offramp: If we vote for something then change our minds, does the original nomination stay in place? |
|
Jan-06-18
 | | offramp: Is it no longer possible to change one's vote?
Also, I'm having trouble voting for Nigel Short as best player. |
|
Jan-06-18
 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <offramp> It's possible to change a vote, but it's not enough to change the URL; you need to untick the checkbox for the candidate you were previously voting for. If you only change the URL, the ticked checkbox will override it and keep you voting for the same candidate. (If you're changing your vote to a candidate who hasn't been nominated yet, you need to both change the URL and untick the checkbox. If you're changing your vote to a candidate who's already been nominated, you won't need to update the URL, since the checkboxes override it; but you may still have to untick your previous candidate's checkbox, since ticking another box doesn't automatically untick the old box. If you've ticked multiple boxes, the system will give your vote to the ticked candidate who appears highest on the randomly ordered list.) -- All candidates with at least one vote are considered nominated, so if you change your vote, the previous candidate will remain listed if they still have somebody else's vote, and disappear from the list if they don't. |

 | | offramp: Many thanks, SQ. |
|
Jan-06-18
 | | offramp: I still can't vote for Nigel Short, though. As player of the year, I mean. |
|
Jan-06-18
 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: Wrong URL format, probably; try Nigel Short. |
|
Jan-06-18
 | | chessgames.com: <If you only change the URL, the ticked checkbox will override it and keep you voting for the same candidate.> Thanks for pointing that out SQ; that's poor design. I'll try to fix that. |
|
Jan-07-18
 | | offramp: <SwitchingQuylthulg: Wrong URL format, probably; try Nigel Short.> Thanks again. The URL I took from his player page was no good. The numerical one that you provided does work. Hopefully only Nigel Short is affected. |
|
Jan-07-18
 | | offramp: "140 registered members online", and <"BEST POST (approx. 7 votes tallied so far)">... What can be done about that? |
|
Jan-07-18
 | | offramp: How about each vote gets 10 chessbucks? |
|
| Jan-07-18 | | diceman: <offramp:
Also, I'm having trouble voting for Nigel Short as best player.> I can see why. |
|
Jan-08-18
 | | chessgames.com: We extended the Game of the Day Archive so that you can see the first week of January 2017. I sort of like "The Grass is Salwe's Greener" myself. |
