Dec-09-24 Ding Liren vs D Gukesh, 2024 (replies)

TheAlchemist: The genius of Ding's play to me was how (except Nb5) he made moves solely on his own half of the board and in 25 moves he completely outplayed Gukesh.

TheAlchemist: White played a seemingly clever sacrifice, but the refutation on move 25 was simply stunning

Feb-22-07  chessmoron: I was going to post right away after their but didn't know how the MFO site works for moving a piece. 11...Nd7
Feb-23-07  Marco65: Things get interesting. 11.g5 is not much played, it's probably overhasty but it's all our burden to prove it. Of course 11...Nd7

<Zebra> A link to Opening e Explorer is always useful to me, I hope someone always post it, because I'm not a premium member and can't get that far

<TheAlchemist> so EA officially onboard?

TheAlchemist: I couldn't get to the cg.com site yesterday, it may have been down, so I'm going to post the move today.

<Marco> Frankly, I was and still am in shock, but I have extended an invitation to him now and await his decision.

Feb-23-07  Marco65: Anyway at the risk of disappointing Brankat I disagree with posting moves before at least 1 day elapsed, so that all members can tell their opinion. Only exception being when there is only 1 legal move, and NOT when there is only 1 logical move! It might seem that there is only 1 logical move, and suddenly one member finds a clever intermediate move.

We don't earn time on the clock by moving faster, so what's the point?

TheAlchemist: Well, I asked about your opinions, the problem was that the site went down, so even if I wanted to post the move, I couldn't. I think we should post the move today, but if anyone objects... I don't care either way, one day isn't that much of a difference really.
Feb-23-07  Marco65: I'm not really concerned about this move, but of the consequence that this habit might have later on. Only my opinion anyway, subject to discussion!
Feb-23-07  dakgootje: Gone until late sunday/early monday.

Arrivederci! =P

Feb-23-07  EmperorAtahualpa: Hey guys. :) I'm sorry to see <Rocafella> is leaving the team.

I received <TheAlchemist>'s invite on my forum. Right now there is not much I can do with my Hattrick team, so sure it would be great to participate in a team game. :) But before I say yes, I would like to know:

- how much time do we have per move?
- are we allowed to use opening books?
- am I allowed to visit <Brankat>'s forum? (because I'm not sure whether that is the general forum or the forum of our opponents)

  TheAlchemist: <EA> 2 days/move. Yes. Yes.
Feb-23-07  EmperorAtahualpa: <TheAlchemist> Alright then, so where do our opponents meet to analyze? This is not clear to me...

Anyway, it's good we can use opening books. :) I have a nice copy of MCO-14 lying on my desk here that I'm sure will be of some use.

OK, I'm in!

TheAlchemist: <EA> They are on another site, http://www.mrfixitonline.com, the link in my profile is where we post the moves on their site. All right, welcome aboard!

To be consistent, I'd like you to post a brief description of yourself, so I can put it in my profile. I will give you number 11, we will retire <Rocafella>'s no.6 jersey.

TheAlchemist: All right, I now officially welcome <EA> to our team. I hope he'll fit right in. Sorry this was done all in such a hurry, but <Rocafella>'s decision was also a sudden one. I got from the recent posts that you were all supporting <EA> joining our team and that it didn't seem like I did it without consulting everybody.

<EA> I hope you realize we're an ambituous team and our fans demand good results, but we don't want to put you under pressure :-).

Feb-23-07  hitman84: Welcome <EA>! :)

Feb-23-07  hitman84: I vote Nd7.
Feb-23-07  Zebra: <Emperor> Welcome aboard. We now have an emperor and a queen as well as a captain and an assassin...

I also vote Nd7.

Feb-23-07  Zebra: Just an idea - maybe I and another GameKnot user could set up this position in a dummy game on GK, then all of us can look it up and use the analysis board. Personally I would find that quite useful. If anybody fancies it, please challenge me to an unrated game with a title like "consultation game" or something.
Feb-23-07  Zebra: By the way, I play there as orangutan. Different species, different continent.
Feb-23-07  hitman84: <Zebra>Great idea!

Challenge me, I'm twister84 there.

  jessicafischerqueen: (Peeks around corner)

I vote <Nd7> I'm sorry I caused all this I think. I have no excuse. I will confine all further comments to the moves on the board. We already have a very fine <Captain>.

Signed, <obedient footsoldier>

Feb-23-07  TTLump: I agree with <Marco65> that we should wait at least a day AND until we have a clear majority for any particular move before posting.
Feb-23-07  TTLump: Here are the two games from this position from the Chessworld Masters Collection. The first game between strong, evenly matched players is won by white after Nd7. The other game which is a draw, black also plays Nd7.

Feb-23-07  TTLump: I also would be willing to play this position on gameknot with someone. My handle there is also <ttlump>.

TheAlchemist: I posted Nd7. Generally, I think we should wait for at least one day as well, just that in this case it seemed like an "only" move and so I decided to ask.

TheAlchemist: Speaking about the game, and I haven't done that for a while, all the bureaucracy that comes with being a captain... :-))))

I think we can expect 12.h4 or 12.f4, protecting the g5 pawn.

I think 12.h4 looks more logical at first glance.

I'm just guessing here, but if 12.f4, with the other idea of keeping our knights off of e5, could we try 12...h6? At first it looks ok to me... 13.gxh6 Rxh6 14.f5 Bh4+ or 13.h4 hxg5 14.fxg5 Nxd4 15.Bxd4 Bxg5.

After 10.h4 in the games <TTLump> posted, 10...Qc7 was tried in the first game and 10...Nde5 in the second one.

I wonder why 11.f4 wasn't tried against 10..Nde5? White could try and push the knight around, in that case, is it better to return to d7, or go to g6 and meet with 11...Ng6 12.h5 Nf8, which seems very awkward.

In the first game, after 10...Qc7 11.h5 b5 12.Nxc6 Qxc6 13.Qd4 Rg8 (here I thought of 13...f6, but it doesn't look too good either) 14.a4 b4, I don't like black's position so much, since after 15.Qxb4 Rb8 16.Qc4 black can't play 16...Qxc4 and 17.Rxb2 because of 18.Bb3.

If 14...Rb8 instead, 15.axb5 axb5 16.Qb4 trying to win the pawn on b5, 16...d5 look suspicious (17.exd5 exd5 18.Bxb5), while 16...Ba6 looks weird.

In any case, after 13.Qd4 Rg8 we have a problem with our king and our rook on g8. Plus we should try to dislodge white's powerful queen on d4. What if we tried 14...bxa4?

I'm sure I'm missing a lot of things here, it's getting a bit late :-)
