  Viewer Deluxe: Hello everyone,
I would like to invite you to this forum to share your experience with Chess Viewer Deluxe. CVD aims to be as user friendly as possible but only the users can tell if the goal was met.
Dec-05-07  Open Defence: Hi there,

I use an Intel iMac with Firefox 2.0.0.11,

I like the viewer a lot especially the copy position etc as it makes my analysis and kibitzing here a whole lot easier

I am not sure about the keyboard shortcuts on the Mac though as Command + P seems to bring up my print dialog, while Ctrl + P does not do anything

however I mainly use my mouse rather than keyboard shortcuts, but someone more used to that who also uses a Mac might find this an issue

thanks for a great viewer

May I suggest an avatar ? maybe a coffee cup ? :)

  Viewer Deluxe: Hi <Open Defence>
Are you using Mac OS X?
I thought Copy/Paste worked neither on Mac nor with Firefox. If so, my guess is that you get your positions from the edit-box. I agree that shortcuts aren’t very Mac-friendly but portability isn’t easy in practice. Do you mean that other shortcuts (e.g. Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V, Ctrl-F) work fine? In that case maybe Ctrl-P is system-wide shortcut on Mac and the viewer doesn’t even get a chance to handle it.

Oh, <an avatar>?
Give me some time. I’m brand new to this site and still finding my way around.

Thanks

Dec-05-07  Open Defence: <Viewer Deluxe> on my iMac the keyboard short cut is <Command> + <c> and <Command> + v to paste (there is a separate Command key) my post was about the keyboard short cuts in general as the Command + short cut key is not handled maybe it is a browser issue and needs to be reported to Mozilla ? but the short cuts work for text in the browser

<Command> + P brings up the print dialog, and Ctrl + P does not do anything

Dec-05-07  Open Defence: and yes Mac OS-X Tiger... probably upgrading to Leopard soon if it is good :)

  Viewer Deluxe: Hi <Open Defence>
Try Ctrl-F and see if it flips the board. If it works then you know the shortcuts go through. The "Copy/Paste" paragraph here chessgames.com chessforum describes some technical details about the feature. In many cases it doesn't work because browser doesn't support it (it isn't as cross platform as we wish).

The keyboard shortcuts should be supported much better. If your arrow keys, Home, End work properly in CVD it means that shortcuts are supported. There are extra requirements for "Copy/Paste" to work and not every browser meats them.

I need more info to understand your situation better.

Does Ctrl-F flip the board?
Does "Copy game" work from the menus?

Dec-05-07  Open Defence: <Viewer Deluxe> or do you prefer being called by your name ? :)

I tried what you told me, turns out I need to click into the game board, then I need to use the <Ctrl> key and not the Mac <Command> key .. here <Ctrl> + F flips the board and <Ctrl> + P opens a kind of separate window (with scroll bars but no x to close it or - to minimize it) and the FEN string is there for me to now select it and <Command> + C and <Command> + V

so it seems Mac users can make use of the short cuts but in a different and slightly round about way, I will try this in the Safari browser and let you know the results if you like :)

Thanks for your patience :)

  Viewer Deluxe: <Open Defence>,
I have much better picture now. Yes, I agree that every platform has its own peculiar differences (if you have to click inside the CVD area). There is no way around such minor quirks. BTW, similar click is required sometimes on Windows and it depends on the Web page design.

Please, read my post about “Copy/Paste” here chessgames.com chessforum. A way to remove the small edit-box is by doing one more “Copy game”.

Dec-05-07  Open Defence: yeah once I read that I realized that I still needed to use the Ctrl key and not the Command key that I am used to.. but its a great viewer and its now my default, I realise that most of this is out of your control, but are you planning to remove the edit box ?

Viewer Deluxe: The future of <EditBox> will depend on the users’ feedback. I could make it fit better in the GUI if people are interested. In my mind “Copy/Paste” is a unique functionality which I haven’t seen in any other Web based chess viewer. My options are limited since applets are restricted (as per Java sandbox security) and have no access to the clipboard. It is up to the browser to provide it and so far only IE seems to have it.
Dec-05-07  Open Defence: yeah the copy paste is the viewers USP really, maybe the location of the edit box could be a bit better but since most use IE and windows you probably got 99% of the users covered but great viewer if I havent said so enough :) thanks for your patience and the opportunity to provide our feed back :)
Dec-09-07  DrNyet: I mentioned in the Chessgames forum that in Opera the browser is freezing and it seems to be when I click a link elsewhere on the page while using Viewer Deluxe. You mentioned to check my Java info.

I don't understand much of the inormation but do you see any problem in the following?

My Java Control Panel says "Java Platform, Standard Edition 6" and "Version 1.6.0 (1.6.0_02-b06)"; it is Sun Microsystems.

A "console" window gives this information:

Java Plug-in 1.6.0_02
Using JRE version 1.6.0_02 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM

c: clear console window
f: finalize objects on finalization queue
g: garbage collect
h: display this help message
l: dump classloader list
m: print memory usage
o: trigger logging
p: reload proxy configuration
q: hide console
r: reload policy configuration
s: dump system and deployment properties
t: dump thread list
v: dump thread stack
x: clear classloader cache
0-5: set trace level to <n>

Viewer Deluxe: You figured it out very well. That’s the “Java console” and it shows no messages. What you see is instructions how to use the console. No, I don’t see anything wrong with Java and there is no obvious reason for your browser to freeze. Can you still use the Viewer after you click on a link? Another idea is to visit a different page http://www.chessdiscussion.com/phpB... and verify if you can follow the links there. In theory, whatever happens in Java applet shouldn’t affect your browser.

Could somebody else using Opera provide their feedback here, please?

Dec-10-07  square dance: im very happy with the chess viewer deluxe. i think its a welcome step up over other java boards. im especially fond of the ability to create my own variations which the viewer saves! very nice work, sir.

chessgames.com: If you notice, the pieces we use on MyChess are slightly different than the ones that come with ChessViewer deluxe. We have the power to offer a choice between the two, if anybody really thinks it very important.

The default Chess Viewer Deluxe pieces look very nice, and are almost identical to our set anyhow, so I can't imagine anybody complaining about them.

Is it worth offering the choice? Ideally we could have a variety of pieces that look more strikingly different. However, anything that strays too far from the normal figurine chess pieces are just novelties anyhow.

Viewer Deluxe: The latest release (ver 3.3) of CVD is more of a bugfix release. Most important, the board coordinates will change when the board is flipped. Visually, the non-active Tab has a darker background. More details can be found on CVD’s Home Page http://www.geocities.com/pilafovi/C... in “Version history”.

A while ago I started a thread here http://www.chessdiscussion.com/phpB... where I could post short guides when asked by users. My next guide will be about navigation through variations. Any other ideas?

Dec-11-07  HFlew: Very nice viewer. It does 2 things very well- the annotations stick out more (so I'm more likely to notice them), and I can use the arrow keys to move through the game! I'm very happy :)

Oh, and the variations thing? That's just awesome!

Dec-11-07  DrNyet: <Viewer Deluxe> "Can you still use the Viewer after you click on a link? Another idea is to visit a different page http://www.chessdiscussion.com/phpB... and verify if you can follow the links there."

No, the freeze doesn't allow clicking within the viewer to work. Yes I can use the viewer at the site you mentioned and then use links outside the viewer.

I don't have the problem with Firefox (or the other viewers).

I tried rebooting and starting no programs other than Opera, but that didn't cause any change.

Thanks

  Viewer Deluxe: <DrNyet>,
Running as few apps as possible was a very good idea. Such an issue is likely to be memory related. There is a whole range of problems that can lead to bad memory. Have you tested your PC memory recently?
Another problem can be the JRE installation. Even if it seems to work fine in another browser. Here is a excellent site http://www.javatester.org that has all you need to verify your Java installation. Can you try Opera on another machine?

Viewer Deluxe: I guess, no news is good news in the context of CVD support. I suppose the <coordinates-system> bug is forgotten by now and I hope any major bug will show up sooner and then follow suit of forgotten ones.

Meanwhile I’m working (whenever I can) on the notorious mouse-wheel issue. Playing with several JREs I managed to see what others described and I do understand it better. All my previous postings are still correct and the whole issue is one big side effect (thanks to Sun). Anyway, I have a good grip and the next CVD release will include a workaround.

While switching JREs I figured out (by chance) what <sanyas> meant about the “jerky animation” in his post Kibitzer's Café. If I keep holding the right arrow key down I could see the funny “jumpy animation”. It only happens in JRE 1.4.0 and works fine in any others JRE I tried. Again, I do have a workaround and it will work better starting the next release.

To those who haven’t tried CVD yet, give it a shot.

Dec-22-07  Open Defence: <Viewer Deluxe> It has been my default viewer for Dec 07 and no major issues thus far
Dec-26-07  YouRang: Hi there!

Could you try loading this game with the CVD? For me, it never seems to load completely.

Kamsky vs Bacrot, 2006
It works okay in the default viewer.
