 | | alexmagnus: ...And another fact contradicting the "greedy expansionist" theory: Israel never annexed the occupied territories, with the exception of East Jerusalem and the Golan heights. |
|
| Jul-10-11 | | Colonel Mortimer: I'm not sure where you get your facts from but they are wrong. I haven't looked at your blog, but if it's anything like your recent statements then you are simply a propagandist for Israel. http://www.btselem.org/settlements/... |

 | | alexmagnus: <I'm not sure where you get your facts from but they are wrong.> Which of the facts exactly is wrong?
1) Israel gave up 84% of the territory occupied in 1967 2)Israel didn't annex any occupied teritory but East Jerusalem and the Golan heights; the rest is officially considered occupied 3) Israel left the Gza strip unilaterally
4)Israel considered giving the West Bank (without East Jerusalem) to Jordan during the peace talks in the mid-80s 5) 60% of Palestinian budget is financed by USA and Israel (25% Europe, 10% Arab states, 5% Palestine itself) As for the settlements: you have to differ between the settlements which exist and the settlements which, from Israeli point of view, must remain "forever". The latter are not so many, mostly the settlements around the narrowest way of the "1967 border" and in the Jordan valley. |
|
| Jul-10-11 | | Colonel Mortimer: Read the link I posted. |
|
Jul-10-11
 | | alexmagnus: Also, of the settlements existing, around 1/3 are actually illegal from Israeli point of view - that is, not sanctioned by Israel at all! |
|
Jul-10-11
 | | alexmagnus: I read the link. I read it years ago, actually. But you still didn't say <which> of my facts is wrong. After all, you said my facts are wrong. Which of the concrete 5 facts? |
|
Jul-10-11
 | | alexmagnus: And another thing: the link shows situation before the start of the politics of the "economy peace". Actually many ways closed to Palestinians before that politics are opened now, and the checkpoints are abandoned. |
|
| Jul-10-11 | | Colonel Mortimer: Why don't you start by listing your sources. It is for you to prove the facts. |
|
Jul-10-11
 | | alexmagnus: <1) Israel gave up 84% of the territory occupied in 1967> Look into any book listing the areas of the territoy occupied. Israel occupied 1967: the West Bank, East Jerusalem, the Gaza strip, the Golan heights and the Sinai peninsula. Israel gave up the Sinai peninsula (in 1979, to Egypt) and the Gaza strip (in 2005, to no state). <2)Israel didn't annex any occupied teritory but East Jerusalem and the Golan heights; the rest is officially considered occupied> This is easily prove if you look at the laws applied. In East Jerusalem and in the Golan, the civil law is in force - as they were annexed. In the West Bank it is the military law - as it was <not> annexed. <3) Israel left the Gza strip unilaterally> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel.... Together with the Gaza strip, four settlements in the West Bank were unbuilt by the way. <4)Israel considered giving the West Bank (without East Jerusalem) to Jordan during the peace talks in the mid-80s> Read the Wikipedia article on the Israel-Jordan peace treaty I posted above. <5) 60% of Palestinian budget is financed by USA and Israel (25% Europe, 10% Arab states, 5% Palestine itself)> Not that I can find the sources now, but it is easy to google :). Actually, for a similar reason there some pro-Palestinians were <against> Israel leaving the Gaza strip in 2005 - suddenly the Gazans had to build up an own economy, as most economical power came from the settlers.... |
|
Jul-10-11
 | | alexmagnus: Just a randomly googled map of Israel with all territories occupied 1967. As I said, Sinai (look at how huge it is!) and Gaza were given up in 1979 resp. 2005: http://www.mideastweb.org/6daywar.jpg |

Jul-13-11
 | | alexmagnus: Just finished writing my thesis (save introduction and some minor details like numbering the linked formulae) :) |

Aug-08-11
 | | alexmagnus: Another way to measure dominance: expected score in a DRR against 5 best players who are not yourself. Just some values:
Carlsen at the moment (July 2011 list): 5.42
Carlsen at his peak (in terms of this value): 5.56
Fischer 1971: 6.36
Fischer 1972: 6.86
Kasparov 1990: 6.70
Kasparov 1999: 6.42 |
|
Aug-08-11
 | | alexmagnus: So one can do with any list... and any player... F.x. Polgar on the Jul 2011 list: "domiantion level" generally: 3.60
"domination level" among women: 6.76 |

 | | alexmagnus: Talking about luck in chess, here is another example: making a right move for a wrong reason. |
|
Aug-26-11
 | | alexmagnus: There are those debates on whether computers will ever solve chess. Not sure about chess, but there was a game, played in the 16th century, which - here I'm really sure - will never be solved. This game is Taikyoku Shogi. http://history.chess.free.fr/images... Played on a 36x36 board. Each side has 402 pieces of 209 different types. Each type of pieces has more than one way to move. There are also some new pieces appearing after promotion (each piece is promoted into some different, pre-known, piece - some of those exist in the starting position, some don't). |

 | | OhioChessFan: I am harldy suprised your opponent disappeared. I have many years of experience online with such people, who always demand you prove everything you affirm, and fall back to such things as "It's reality", as you see above. Over and over and over and over. I can deal with most any political difference of opinion, but to side with the Palestinians is a deal breaker. I feel like it's a defect in a person's DNA or something. |

Sep-01-11
 | | alexmagnus: Today's FIDE rating update: for the first time since I started monitoring it the list of 20 highest rated players ever didn't change (neither in term of players nor in terms of numbers). The highest rated player who improved his all-time high is Kamsky, who with his new all-time high of 2756 is shared 23rd on the highest rated players ever list. |
|
Sep-01-11
 | | alexmagnus: As for domination level:
Carlsen/all players: 5.44
Polgar/all players: 3.62
Polgar/women: 6.82. |
|
| Sep-10-11 | | shivasuri4: If you have the time(and the inclination,of course),I request you to solve the following problems that have been nagging me for the last 6 days. If y=(ln(x+sqrt(1+x^2)))^2,find the nth derivatve of y at x=0. If y=1/(x^2+ x +1),find the nth derivative of y. |
|
Sep-13-11
 | | alexmagnus: Hm... Didn't find anything immediate after just taking the derivatives and looking at them, so I guess there must be some "hidden hint" in the functions themselves... I'll take a look at it later (got to defend my thesis on 15th, so it's more important to me now :)) |
|
| Sep-14-11 | | shivasuri4: Sure,no hurry.Thanks for the effort.I have given up on the problems,though. |
|
Oct-18-11
 | | alexmagnus: Talking of rating inflation/lack of it: currently it's a good moment to revive the discussion. If Kramnik plays a good Unive tournament, we have for the first time four 2800 players. Now, inflationists will scream "Inflation!". But was it? See, Kramnik gets over 2800 in a tournament in which neither of the three other 2800s play. So why should his result affect their ratings? (which it would if we were to keep the number of 2800s constant). Or why should their ratings affect his rating (another way of avoiding four 2800s), no matter how good he plays? No inflation here, just Kramnik having a good tournament while the others in this rating group resting... |

 | | alexmagnus: Slyusarchuk is not just a fraudster. He used his fraudulent documents to <kill> people. http://expres.ua/main/2011/10/20/52... (Ukrainian). |
|
Nov-01-11
 | | alexmagnus: Carlsen's domination score now is the same as in the previous list, 5.44. |
|
Dec-10-11
 | | alexmagnus: I wonder how those who trace rating inflation by the number of 2700+s explain that now on the live list we have only 40 of them, with the record being 49. |
