The FIDE lists only give the countries. We can't really expect <alexmagnus> to research for each Indian chessplayer whether that player's place of residence was in pre-independence times ruled by the British, the Portuguese or the French, for example. Besides, players can move from one state to another at any time.As to the merits, I'd argue that, while Texas has a mixture of post-British and post-Spanish attributes, the post-British ones (language, culture, system of laws and government, etc.) are still great enough to support Xiong's membership on that list. |

 | | beatgiant: To <nok>'s point, top US players whose place of residence was never ruled by the British, with the state and former empire (state based on US federation listing): 1. Caruana (NV, Spanish)
2. So 2770 (MN*, French)
3. Dominguez Perez 2758 (MO, French)
4. Xiong 2709 (TX, Spanish)
5. Shankland 2691 (CA, Spanish)
6. Robson 2673 (MO, French)
7-8. Onischuk 2649 (TX, Spanish)
7-8. Swiercz 2649 (MO, French)
9. Bruzon Batista 2639 (MO, French)
10. Zherebukh 2620 (MO, French)
*The state was split but I think So lives on the former French side. |

 | | beatgiant: Among the top Indian players, Anand and Harikrishna reside outside India (further showing the futility of a state-based criterion), but all of them as far as I can tell are from former British ruled parts of the country. |

Jun-03-21
 | | alexmagnus: I will still keep including all US players into my "former British Empire" lists :). The US was founded in a fight for independence from Britain, so if we just look at a country (and not the state or even city level), it makes perfect sense to include the US (unlike, for example, China: Hongkong is a separate federation anyway, and Weihai is too insignifcant to consider China a former British colony :D. And even in Hongkong federation ever gets integrated into the Chinese federation, it is still too little). Next namesake list: US presidents

 | | beatgiant: For completeness, here are the notable Indian players I found from places that were never British-ruled (states based on wikipedia's list of Indian chess players). I can't guarantee the accuracy or completeness, but it's good enough to be able to conclude that it doesn't affect <alexmagnus>'s Former British Empire list. I can also confirm that state-level research is indeed as much work as expected ;-) 1. Mendonca 2549 (Goa, Portuguese)
2. Anurag 2499 (Goa, Portuguese)
3. Kulkarni Bhakti 2391 (Goa, Portuguese)
4. Audi Ameya 2378 (Goa, Portuguese)

 | | alexmagnus: Currently there are six living (linear) world champions. When were most world champions alive? The answer is, between 1975 (Karpov gaining the title) and 1980 (Euwe's death), when there were <eight> world champions alive. The least world champions alive were obviously 1, which happened three times: 1886-1894 (Steinitz), 1900-1921 (Lasker - the longest period with a stable number of living world champions) and 1946-1948 (Euwe). There the detailed number changes (C: the player became world champion, D: the player died) 1886: Steinitz C (1)
1894: Lasker C (2)
1900: Steinitz D (1)
1921: Capablanca C (2)
1927: Alekhine C (3)
1935: Euwe C (4)
1941: Lasker D (3)
1942: Capablanca D (2)
1946: Alekhine D (1)
1948: Botvinnik C (2)
1957: Smyslov C (3)
1960: Tal C (4)
1963: Petrosian C (5)
1969: Spassky C (6)
1972: Fischer C (7)
1975: Karpov C (8)
1980: Euwe D (7)
1984: Petrosian D (6)
1985: Kasparov C (7)
1992: Tal D (6)
1995: Botvinnik D (5)
2000: Kramnik C (6)
2007: Anand C (7)
2008: Fischer D (6)
2010: Smyslov D (5)
2013: Carlsen C (6).
Oldest living world champion:
1886-1900 Steinitz
1900-1941 Lasker
1941-1942 Capablanca
1942-1946 Alekhine
1946-1980 Euwe
1980-1995 Botvinnik
1995-2010 Smyslov
Since 2010 Spassky
If WC title were a lifelong title (but a titleholder emerging after the player's death would be the same as in real life), world champions would be: 1886-1900 Steinitz
1900-1941 Lasker
1941-1946 Alekhine
1948-1995 Botvinnik
Since 1995 Kasparov |

Jul-08-21
 | | alexmagnus: As for why I had this strange idea of a lifelong WC list: chess world champions are often named chess kings, and <kings> typically have their titles for life.... |
|
Jul-08-21
 | | alexmagnus: Also, the "lifelong world champion" idea reminds me of the concept of the Iffland ring among German language actors. Only that the ring is passed on by the bearer's last will, while here we have an objective criterion: the new bearer of the award is the reigning world champion at the moment of the previous bearer's death. |
|
Jul-09-21
 | | alexmagnus: Slight correction, Euwe, of course, died in 1981 and not 1980. Which doesn't change any of those lists above much. |
