keypusher: Thanks for consulting with me, Doctor!

I have played the Evans maybe 20 times on GameKnot, and only seen the Compromised Defense once (I beat molonlave, rated near 2000, on a blunder). In my life I have seen it very, very rarely. I am not sure why. Like you, I have a hard time believing White has enough for the two pawns.

So, I looked up the Evans Gambit on the opening explorer on Gameknot, and learned two surprising facts: (i) the Compromised Defense is employed often there, and (ii) it scores poorly. Even if I restrict my search to games where at least one participant is over 1900, both facts remain true. Again, I am not sure why. My general impressions, from skimming the games and also my own limited experience, are: Black generally can’t be prevented from castling, but White develops his rooks to the central files, both his bishops are trained at the kingside, his pawn is on e5, and Black has a hard time getting completely free. It’s a little bit like the main lines of the Two Knights defense in reverse, where White’s pawns look great, his development seems OK, but he has a hard time getting unwound. It would be good practice for your students, though.

Lasker’s Defense again is something I don’t have much direct experience with. It doesn’t get played a lot, if Gameknot is any indication. You have a good summary of all the current lines in your post to me. But White can go into the main-line Lasker’s with 6. d4 d6 7. 0-0 Bb6 8. de de 9. Qb3 Qf6 10. Bg5 Qg6 11. Bd5 Nge7 12. Bxe7 Kxe7 13. Bxc6 Qxc6 14. Nxe5 Qe6 15. Nc4 (this is hundred-year-old analysis, but still good as far as I know). Black is probably a little better, given his two bishops and sounder pawns. But White does have attacking chances and (no small consideration) material is even! Here's an example of White making good use of his extra kingside pawn. M Schroeder vs I Oren, 1989

I honestly think Black can do better than this against the Evans. Also, if 9. Qxd8+, the ending is better for Black, but not enormously so, and it’s pretty boring. In a Gameknot thematic tournament a 2300-player beat me and several other people with 9. Qxd8+.

So, if the Compromised Defense is too greedy, and Lasker’s Defense not greedy enough, what else is there? Well, I have extensive and negative experience with the Normal Position, courtesy of lethe/where is my mind. We’ve reached the position after 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. b4 Bxb4 5. c3 Bc5 (no downside to this move if you’re playing to reach the Normal Position as Black; of course you can get there via 5…Ba5 as well) 6. d4 ed 7. 0-0 d6 (7….dc? 8. Bxf7+ and Qd5+) 8. cd Bb6 three times. I’ve managed one grovelling draw. You can look up my most recent loss to him (88 moves!) on gameknot for an example of Black’s resources. White has more space and freedom, but Black gets his share of play, particularly by continually threatening …d5 or …f5 or by getting his extra queenside pawns moving. The bishop on b6 can also take part in a counterattack on White’s king. So, this may be a good alternative for your students. It’s also very easy to play and remember.

Finally, a good way for Black to fight back early is 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. b4 Bxb4 5. c3 Ba5 6. d4 ed 7. 0-0 Nge7 8. cd d5!. This leads to even material like Lasker’s Defense, but it is much more lively and will provide a better tactical education for your students.

Hope this is helpful!
