  OhioChessFan: Here's <tpstar's> intro.

♔ ♔ ♔ ♔ BEST GAMES OF 2020 ♔ ♔ ♔ ♔

Welcome to the seventeenth annual Best Games contest where we vote on the top games of last year, and then our results will be recorded for posterity in a Game Collection. For the Best Games of 2020, please post your votes in the <bgitw> chessforum from now until the end of January 15, and then we'll announce the results starting January 16. You may list up to ten database games from 2020, with your #1 choice receiving ten points and your #10 choice receiving one point. If you only nominate one game, it gets all 10 points; three games get 10 points & 9 points & 8 points, and so on. Please list your votes in downward order with #1 first and not a reverse countdown. Also, please do not post any running updates of the voting until the end. Note each game must receive at least two nominations to make the Top Ten.

You may include a description of why you enjoyed that game if you like, or else just post your list. Don't feel any pressure to supply deep analysis, and don't feel compelled to justify your choices. Vote however you want.

OhioChessFan: Some game collections to get ideas for Game of the Year:

Game Collection: 0ZeR0's Favorite Games Volume 3

Game Collection: 0ZeR0's Favorite Games Volume 8

(Sorted by year, obviously this year at the bottom. 0Zer0 has many collections with 2020 games in them beyond these 2 representatives.)

Game Collection: OhioChessFan's favorite games of 2020

Game Collection: My favorite Candidate 2020 Games

Game Collection: 2020 The Corona Beer & Black Bears Matter More

OhioChessFan: I'll get the ball rolling:

1. D Dubov vs Karjakin, 2020

Game of the Year. A brilliant masterpiece by Dubov.

2. Caruana vs A Firouzja, 2020

Fab dominate a major piece endgame.

3. Aydin Suleymanli vs Smirin, 2020

White simply destroys Black's defenses.

4. W So vs Carlsen, 2020

So dominates the WCC. He seems to be getting over a bit of a psychological hurdle.

5. Nakamura vs D Dubov, 2020

Another spectacular Dubov win.

6. A Galliamova vs A Kashlinskaya, 2020

Not the most accurate game, but a spectacular exhibition regardless.

7. J K Duda vs V Artemiev, 2020

Black wins in 35 moves with a Caro Kann. Be still, my heart.

8. A Giri vs Carlsen, 2020

Carlsen makes a Rook and Pawn game look easy to convert.

9. Nakamura vs Carlsen, 2020

Reminiscent of So, a big psychological hurdle surmounted by Naka.

10. A Firouzja vs Caruana, 2020

The future WCC's most spectacular game of the year.

OhioChessFan: I just realized <tpstar> would have counted <jfq> post as her #1 game of the year. You may include 9 more if you wish.

<OhioBestGameFan>

I am going to go with a solo vote for the <Frederick Rhineland> game.

Tbh I no longer play through any games at cg.com that aren't at least 100 years old. Since I started publishing pgn submissions, <however> *cough*, I have become familiar with several of <Frederick Watch on the Rhine (1943)'s> recent games. I find them scintillating, and I find this one scintillatingest: W Christensen vs F Rhine, 2020

Jan-02-21  Messiah: (please do not actually add my entries to the list, as they lack seriousness and may distort the final result)

OhioChessFan: Ok <Messiah>. But this was never too serious anyway. I always vote for a Black win in the Caro Kann. Nobody complains.

HeMateMe: I'd like to please spread my vote out on three games:

1. <3. Carlsen vs Aronian, 2020>

Endgame star MC hoisted by his own petard!

2. <6. Caruana vs Aronian, 2020>

3. <7. Vachier-Lagrave vs Ding Liren, 2020>

Max v. Ding, also from the Candidates tournament. I love this game because it looks like games us mere mortals play, jumbled up pieces, and one is lost through sharp tactics.

OhioChessFan: -<juan> and <HMM> please cast your votes by links, as there were a number of games with those matchups this year and I'm not 100% certain which games you mean.
