 | | Tabanus: The four games are still there. I suppose only the bio text was deleted. <Chessical> I suspect you did it :) I've done it myself: been working on two tabs and updated the wrong one. I've even did it once while editing someone else's text. |

 | | Chessical: Chessgames> I lost the text for the introduction. At least there is the prospect of a positive outcome from all what has happened. |

 | | Tabanus: Well, at least I added date to Game 4 (April 19). And wrote "Donner - Larsen Zonal Playoff" in the Event fields. I think it should be either that, or "Larsen - Donner Zonal Playoff", or "The Hague Zonal Playoff" (following the Wageningen 1957 zonal). |

 | | Tabanus: <CG> See the Bistro on Chessgames Country Codes (again! Sorry). I suggest AUH Austria-Hungary
RUE Russian Empire
At least these are better than using RUS, URS, HUN or AUT for events before 1918. I'll update manually (within limits). |

 | | Stonehenge: What's the point of repeating the player's names in the event field? |
|
Jan-28-18
 | | Tabanus: <Stonehenge> We have not done that all too often in the Interzonal and Candidates playoffs. Actually I'd prefer "The Hague Zonal Playoff" or "Hague Zonal Playoff" or "Haag Zonal Playoff". |

 | | chessgames.com: <Stonehenge: What's the point of repeating the player's names in the event field?> This is probably a topic best discussed at the Biographer Bistro. <Tab> Ditto, I'll post a response there in a minute. |

 | | OhioChessFan: When a person goes to the Pun Voting Booth, and they choose "I don't get the pun", does that generate a negative score? For my money, the best puns are a bit subtle and don't have to be painfully obvious. The problem is that I think the general view on this site of what counts as funny has always struck me as very broad and obvious, and usually lacking in subtlety and intelligence. Some of the best puns ever have a lot of kibitizing where people complain they don't get it. Augghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!! Anway, it seems to me if someone doesn't get a pun, there's a good chance they simply don't recognize a good thing when they see it! How about encouraging people not to choose that, or at the minimum, if they don't get it, just let it not be scored. |
|
Jan-28-18
 | | chessgames.com: I believe "I don't get the pun" is an alternate way of not voting for it. It was put in there specifically because some people would give the lowest-vote to every pun they don't get. (Some people still do that, I'm sure, but at least that should make it less pronounced.) There are a set of puns which are probably very good (they are voted highly) but I don't personally understand the reference. I'm always afraid to put something online that I don't understand. After all, it might be controversial. Often it's just a matter of knowing a certain book, movie, etc. Maybe I should post them all here one day and let you folks explain them to me. |

| Jan-28-18 | | zanzibar: BTW- when I was experiencing the timeout problems it wasn't because of my use of tabs. Sometimes I'd finish off a preview and then post it... this step would fail (timeout), and I'd lose all my preview edits. Of course I could go back to the forum "Leave a comment!" box utilizing the browser cache - but the preview edits were unrecoverable. . |

 | | chessgames.com: Oh, I remember now.
<chrisowen> has been posting in the Chessgames Challenge: Team White vs Team Black, 2017 lately, and those posts are forbidden to appear in the Search Kibitzing page, for obvious reasons. Normally you see 10 posts per page, but if 9 out of 10 of those posts were in the private challenge thread, you'll only see one post. So it's not a bug, just how it works. |

 | | chessgames.com: Team Black should be quaking in their boots now that you've uncovered the depth of chrisowen's commitment to the game :) |

 | | WannaBe: Methink, Team White maybe spending more time to deciphering than move analysis, with <chrisowen>... |

| Feb-01-18 | | morfishine: The following game already has a game title but is up for voting in the pun voting booth for another game title. Is that normal? Portisch vs Pinter, 1984 ***** |
|
| Feb-01-18 | | morfishine: BTW: there's a whole bunch of games over at the pun voting booth that already have game titles??? |

 | | chessgames.com: Sometimes we have 5 puns for the same game, and one of them gets chosen. The other 4 don't just disappear. |

| Feb-02-18 | | Robed.Bishop: <chessgames.com: Team Black should be quaking in their boots now that you've uncovered the depth of chrisowen's commitment to the game :)> Okay, now that was funny! |

| Feb-02-18 | | WinKing: Whatever happened to the 'Rinus Scholarship'? Is that even still in existence.? We used to give this award out to deserving individuals in the Challenge games against GM's. We no longer play GM's. Below is how <chessgames> defines this award: <The Rinus Scholarship
The Rinus Scholarship gives free premium Chessgames memberships to people who contribute their efforts to the Chessgames Challenge. The donated memberships will be awarded to deserving users by the scholarship managers. The proceeds from donations to the Rinus Scholarship will be placed in a special fund designated to hire grandmasters for upcoming Chessgames Challenges.> Source of info above: Gift Membership Page Maybe this award needs a new 'updated' definition if it is still in
existence. I used to be on the committee(scholarship managers) that helped pick deserving members when these games were going on. I for one would
like a clarification on 'The Rinus Award' & what it is being used for. |

 | | chessgames.com: <WinKing> That’s a very good point. For those who don’t know the story, User: rinus was a beloved member who participated in the GM games, and sadly passed away in 2008. Some members, notably <hms123> started the scholarship in his name shortly after the sorrowful news. Members were encouraged to donate accounts to the fund that would be distributed to the top contributors of GM games, and meanwhile we pledged to use the income to recruit more GMs. In a sense, we might be said to have been matching the donations. As we haven’t had a GM game in a long time (for various reasons, not the least of which is the rise of the computers) the scholarship fell by the wayside. The last donation was a membership transfer by MAJ on Christmas 2015. We should remove the donation option from our site at this stage. The money in the fund is still there (by that I mean “we’re good for it”) so perhaps a good resolution would be to have one last GM game in rinus’s honor. Then all remaining scholarship accounts (of which there are 13) might be distributed when the game is over. I think it may be fitting to take up Arno Nickel either in conventional chess or Lasker chess, if he’s still willing. <hms123>’s opinion would be welcomed here. |

 | | saffuna: Any way you can determine if Wesley So's latest on his player page is real? I find it difficult to believe So would refer to Carlsen as "Magpus." |
|
Feb-03-18
 | | chessgames.com: It’s definitely Wesley. I’m sure it was just a typo; maybe typing from a phone. <hms123> I missed that email amidst the holiday newsletter chaos. (You can’t imagine what an inbox looks like after sending 200K emails!) Thank you for resending and I’ll get back with you soon. |
