| Jun-30-11 | | shivasuri4: <Benzol:...Out of curiosity I'd be interested to know who the forty or so actually are.>
Ah,I see, this statement does leave room for such an interpretation as mine but yours is the more accurate version,I suppose. |

 | | Annie K.: <shivasuri4> the main detail to note is that Benzol was not addressing that sentence, nor that post to cg. And since asking cg to unilaterally post the names of their biographers - which would be a violation of their privacy - would likely not have been a very popular suggestion with the biographers... your attribution of this suggestion to Benzol could be seen as libelous. I don't believe you intended that, but you do seem to have an unusually acute case of foot-in-mouth disease. Try to take a little longer to consider how various readers would interpret what you say, before hitting that post button, eh? :) |
|
| Jun-30-11 | | TheFocus: A couple of biographers have already identified themselves. That is good in case any of us want to make suggestions to them. If any biographer wants to remain anonymous, that is their right to do so. I do not think <CG> should reveal them due to privacy issues. |

 | | chessgames.com: We've always treated the subject of who is a biographer as confidential, but of course they are welcome to say so themselves. We will never give biographers a special symbol on their profile, or access to secret reports, or anything exclusive like that. We fear that if we gave biographers some special benefit it would cause members to try to become biographers for the wrong reasons. |

| Jul-02-11 | | DrNyet: It appears that editing the Enhanced Menu Configuration - Extras (i.e. where you can add your own links to the ones that appear at the top of most pages, by clicking the [Edit] link) only works in Internet Explorer. I've tested with Opera, Firefox, and Chrome and under Windows XP and Windows 7. I don't know if the fix would be easy, but it seems like it would be worth looking into when time permits (especially for a tinkerer like me). While I'm thinking of it: A fairly obvious but useful tip, if you have numerous links, is to make some of the added links stand out by such methods as this format: "|| BIO BISTRO ||". This makes it easy to delineate and find sections or key links within one's list. |

| Jul-02-11 | | Shams: Hello all~
This idea is too good not to have been anticipated: can we get pages for historical tournaments? Start with AVRO '38, Hastings 1895 etc and go from there. I think it would be a hoot. |

| Jul-03-11 | | Benzol: <Shams> <This idea is too good not to have been anticipated: can we get pages for historical tournaments?> <Shams> CG had mentioned something about this earlier, last year I think it was, so I'm just biding my time waiting for it to happen. I think it will eventually. A great number of historic tournaments have already been complied by a number of members so the task shouldn't be that difficult to implement. |

I've tested with Opera, Firefox, and Chrome and under Windows XP and Windows 7.> I find that shocking to learn, as it's a very simple program. (We recently made a change--we added the Bistro as a standard choice next to the Kibitzer's Cafe, so conceivably we recently caused it to break.) We will review the softtware and try to figure out an explanation for what you observed. If we find ourselves unable to replicate the problem I will send you an email and ask for more details. Thanks in any case for reporting that. |

| Jul-04-11 | | hms123: <chessgames.com> <DrNyet> is right as far as I am concerned. It doesn't work for me in Google Chrome either. I can enter the title and url but when I hit the <update> button nothing happens. |

 | | OhioChessFan: Oddly enough, the extras work with AOL's browser, which is 2 shades shy of worthless. |

| Jul-04-11 | | crawfb5: The enhanced menu configuration hasn't worked for me since the addition of the Biographer's Bistro. By "not working," I mean I cannot change my standard enhanced menu for within site options. I don't use any URLs as "extras." I am on Firefox 5.0. |

 | | kingscrusher: Hi Chessgames.com
The Opening explorer is a great feature and I have done some Youtube videos recently emphasising it on this site. Some feedback I picked up which may be useful for future updates: - I think some people would prefer flicker free without reload of each position. Is it possible to make it with Ajax to achieve this?! - I think maybe some people prefer board options. Is it possible to seperate the board viewer from the stats, so the board viewer can be customisable?! From a chess perspective, I was checking out the "main line" of the Sicilian Najdorf in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prvW...
And it occurs to me that the main story unfolding about this variation is difficult to tell - which seems to be a trend towards black playing Nbd7 and avoiding castling early which allows a hack attack with f3 and g4. Could some historical trend implication be included in the stats overview - where more recently popular moves are emphasised ?! Best wishes

 | | kingscrusher: Just as a specific example of "historical trends", it was mentioned that Ng4 is used quite a lot at club level: Opening Explorer And I have just noticed Giri playing it in the dutch championsip (most recent event). So some idea of not just wins/draws/losses but also a kind of year profile of the games played. Like for example 20 - 2011 10 - 2010, etc - it would be interested to know if Ng4 has the potential to take over as the main move from say e6 or e5 based on recent historical trends. |

| Jul-05-11 | | Appaz: Hello, chessgames.com.
Due to the latest incidents on the Wesley So page I suggest that it is time for enforce English language only on that page. The page could really need a breath of fresh air from outside the rather closed community there, and also I don't understand how you can make sure the posting guidelines are followed when most conversations are in Tagalog. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Appaz> We take a day off for a holiday and look what happens! We see now that there are a large number of whistles regarding the So page, with plenty of examples of English posts to get our admins started. About enforcing the rules, it really should work very similarly in Tagalog as in English, the primary difference being that when people make a complaint about a Tagalog post we need to know the specific post (quote it word for word), and moreover, we'd really appreciate a literal translation. When we ask for a literal translation some people might feel uncomfortable if it's highly offensive, but that's when we MOST need a literal translation, so we can judge the severity of our response. Unfortunately, two things are preventing us from getting a handle on the Wesley So page: First, most people who speak Tagalog apparently are very reluctant to submit Whistles, perhaps out of a feeling of kinship for their fellow posters. It's like a little club in there, and the insiders don't want to be "rats". Second, when we are lucky enough to receive a complaint from somebody who speaks Tagalog, it's often woefully inadequate for us to actually take action. Just as an example of the second case, yesterday we received this complaint about a certain member who I will not name, <He has lots of messages in the Tagalog language that are inappropriate.> I don't doubt that the claim is true, but without more specifics we can't do anything at all. So in short, I think we can solve the madness on the Wesley So page with some cooperation of a few of the good posters who speak Tagalog and enjoy Chessgames. They need to not be so bashful about using the Whistle feature, or about translating some Tagalog. Perhaps some people are afraid that they will end up getting their friends banned from Chessgames, but anybody who's spent much time here should know how hard it is to get banned from CG. We give our members the benefit of the doubt, perhaps even to a fault. |

 | | chessgames.com: <hms123: <chessgames.com> It works like a charm for Google Chrome. thanks.> It was the classic HTML bug of crossed-tags; our mistake. The only weird thing is that it had nothing to do with the addition of the The Biographer Bistro so we're still scratching our heads over why it was never reported before. Maybe it's just not a well known feature. |
|
| Jul-05-11 | | Appaz: Well, chessgames.com, I see your post as one long argument for enforcing English there. If you are dependent of random kibitzers not only to spot offensive (or even, as in guideline 4, illegal) kibitzing, but also depend on translations from possible involved kibitzers, then I'm afraid the Wesley So page will remain a lawless land. As for "a little club" there doesn't seem to much left of it after the (rightfully) outburst of Wesley So and his following departure from the site. |
|
| Jul-05-11 | | hms123: <chessgames.com> I had set up a number of links when you first announced the feature--but I did it in Explorer. I haven't had the need to add more since I switched to Chrome. I imagine others found themselves in the same situation. |
|
| Jul-05-11 | | hms123: <chessgames.com> Although I hesitate to comment on the <So> page, one issue seems to be that there are those who post there who don't think their English is good enough. Further, they seem embarrassed by this fact. Apparently, some others on the page are critical of those with "poor" English. There are plenty of members who write in less-than-perfect English. I have not seen any of them criticized on any other page. In general, folks are happy to offer constructive suggestions, correct non-idiomatic usage, etc. in the proper spirit. Perhaps it would help to announce that consistent criticism of poor English by those for whom English is not a primary language would be considered a violation of guideline #3. |
