| Dec-27-13 | | davide2013: Could you add this game to Guess The Move? B Lasker / Von Scheve / Trobach vs Tarrasch / Harmonist / Heidebreck, 1881
It is part of the 300 games of Tarrasch (the book: dreihundert schachpartien), and it said it could be add only by an administrator, but the game is between Lasker and Tarrasch, in consultation with others. |

 | | chessgames.com: <notyetagm> Sure, we've got the Russian Rapids and are working on the Juniors. <davide2013> No problem, it's in the queue now. |

It would be nice to see a page similar to this one:
Stockholm Interzonal (1962)
for Portoroz 1958 |

 | | Phony Benoni: <thegoodanarchist> Is there a problem with Portoroz Interzonal (1958)? |
|
| Dec-28-13 | | thegoodanarchist: <PB> I looked and looked for that and couldn't find it. Thanks. |

Dec-28-13
 | | Phony Benoni: <thegoodanarchist? There is a index of tournament pages here: Tournament Index |
|
Dec-28-13
 | | chessgames.com: We plan on making that page searchable by tournament name so you can just type "Portoroz" and get an appropriate list. |

| Dec-29-13 | | dakgootje: Just read through it all. Although it does have a few valid points, I suppose the main gap in the columns argument is this: <Because chessgames.com itself gives almost no indication of caring about standards (if the site did, it would not have a feeble, unsourced "quote of the day" and other unscholarly trimmings) it is no surprise to find that many – or even most – members make no real effort when posting material. In our scrutiny of the site we saw just the tiniest handful of contributors on historical matters who offer anything worthwhile. Some of them clearly care, but their efforts are swamped by hundreds of other people's messages every day that, selfishly, waste everybody's time with drivel.> Unscholarly trimmings.. swamped by drivel. Heh, drivel. Sure, if the site's only purpose was historical accuracy. If you presume all commentators ought to be chess history researchers, then the average kibitz would equate drivel indeed. (And presumably even without that presumption the average kibitz in the cafe <is>) However given that this isn't the sole reason people visit this site, the argument gets undermined quite a bit. Without wanting to do extensive scholarly standardized research, I'm fairly confident the large majority of visitors don't much mind which month of 1922 Jimbob played Sue. They played, we've got the game, and -oh wonderful- we know the year/venue. If we'd really want to, that information is probably sufficient to find a primary source. It'd be nigh impossible to detail, and reference!, 700k games to that extend. It's important for World Championship matches which is still very much a work in progress. I'm a bit intrigued about one part of the column though. It mentions, and builds on the idea, that users can simply alter anything they want. I think the first mention: <In short, it is an unusual cross-breed: your typical chess database yoked with a network of chat groups, armed with a Wikipedia-like ability to alter, delete, or add content.> This is odd - given that it's quite evidently untrue. And I'm quite at a loss why they'd write this. Either they think it is true (which would be curiouser and curiouser, given how thorough they want to be). Or they know it is untrue (but withhold it for whatever reason), which would be rather unethical. Strange situation, isn't it. |

| Dec-29-13 | | MarkFinan: Is there a way of slowing the pgn viewer down when it's on automatic? I use chess viewer deluxe, and it seems to have around 3 second gaps between moves and I just wandered if you can slow it down without going manual? ✌ |

 | | chessgames.com: <MostlyAverageJoe: I stumbled across this: http://www.chesscafe.com/urcan/urca... and am wondering if you are aware of it and whether any response is planned…> No we were not aware of Mr. Urcan's review. I see no publication date; is it recent? We have no response at this time other than to thank him for triggering a number of correction slips addressing the errata he was able to locate. |

| Dec-29-13 | | MarkFinan: It's a few weeks old tops. I've known about it since Xmas day but didn't say because I thought you'd have known and it's not exactly the best Xmas present. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Is there a way of slowing the pgn viewer down when it's on automatic?> In Chess Viewer Deluxe I am not sure. Maybe Viewer Deluxe chessforum has the answer, but offhand I don't remember it having that feature. For pgn4web, there definitely is: once the game is auto-playing, just press a number from 1 (fastest) to 9 (slowest). |

The board and pieces look.. ugly, for want of a better word though! And yesKarpova chessforum is always a good source for offsite gossip. And I'm not being sarcastic. |

 | | chessgames.com: Some new changes to the E-Z Search: (1) Limitations on opening searches.
We noticed a great number of people using E-Z Search as a kind of cumbersome backdoor into the Opening Explorer. A way for free members to get to use the Opening Explorer beyond the normal move limitation. The way it worked (used to work) is this: you enter, say, a 10 move variation and get the "stop sign page" telling you to become a premium member if you want to go further. But you can see on that page that the next theory move is 11.Re1, so then you go back to the E-Z Search and enter the same variation with 11.Re1 tacked on at the end. Now you get a peek at the next theory move for Black; again you tack that onto the end of your variation. Rinse and repeat, and you can use the Opening Explorer for free. We've put a stop to this. If you enter more than 10 half-moves, it will say <Sorry, as a non-premium member, your opening searches are restricted to 10 half-moves or fewer. A Chessgames Premium Membership allows you to search up to 40 half-moves.> It then politely gives you a link to the truncated variation. Premium members are unaffected by this change.
(2) Special searches.
We were looking in the logs for the most common failed searches. Two searches stood out head and shoulders above the rest: "Game of the Century" and "Immortal Game". Even though these are not the types of queries that E-Z Search was intended to address, we've made an exception for those two, such that typing in "game of the century" (and variations) will send you straight to D Byrne vs Fischer, 1956. Just for fun, we threw in "the Polish Immortal" as well. If we notice something in the logfiles that people apparently want to find we might make a few more special searches. (3) Extra-special searches.
Going further down the list of failed searches we found a lot of people typing in things like "X-ray attack" or "rook and pawn endings". Again, this is not what E-Z Search was built for, but if people want to use it that way we may be able to accommodate. We've taken a few popular searches and wired them directly to the Game Collection Search. So for example, if you use E-Z Search to search "Bishop Endings" you'll get a number of fine game collections on the topic. (4) FEN searches.
Finally we noted that a few optimistic people attempt to type FEN directly into the E-Z Search only to get the "we cannot interpret this search" error. Now it will actually identify a FEN string and send you straight to the appropriate Opening Explorer page. (Please note FEN-search is a premium membership feature.) |

(Please note FEN-search is a premium membership feature.)> Well I am a premium member and whenever I input fen into the fen box in the opening explorer it doesn't recognize it! I've not mentioned it before because I like to *think* out of sight out of mind, so no rush and I'll ask around, but I wouldn't mind you telling me what im doing wrong there when you have the time. ✌ |

| Dec-29-13 | | hms123: <Mark> It worked for me. I put in this FEN click for larger viewand it sent me here:
Opening Explorer No quotation marks on the FEN.
I did put in the complete version of the FEN:
r2qk2r /pp1bppbp/3p1np1/n5B1/3NP3/1BN2P2/PPPQ2PP/R3K2R b KQkq - 0 10 (I inserted a space after the first block so that it would not make a diagram appear>) I just checked and it works on the shorter version of the FEN as well: r2qk2r /pp1bppbp/3p1np1/n5B1/3NP3/1BN2P2/PPPQ2PP/R3K2R (again, space inserted) |

Dec-29-13
 | | chessgames.com: <MarkFinan> Show me the FEN you are typing. It's probably truncated. I believe the software requires all of the information up to and including castling rights, but doesn't care about the extended data (the en-passant square, how many ply left to the 50-move-rule, etc.). |

|
| Dec-29-13 | | MarkFinan: I think it's the 'hyphen zero one zero' at the end of this fen that the OE doesn't recognize. r2qk2r /pp1bppbp/3p1np1/n5B1/3NP3/1BN2P2/PPPQ2PP/R3K2R b KQkq - 0 10 Not to worry, I'll work it out. 😃 |
