Check It Out: Let's not get carried away here. I believe the quality of the GOTD is more important than the pun but I also like the puns. Uncoupling them is one solution. However, if its not to be, so be it. No need to get overly serious.
Mar-14-14  gauer: When a tournament page appears with a type "leaderboard" box, is there any sort of resource (maybe like a Chessgames.com Webmaster Resources game of the day picture of a critical position of a drop-down list of games on one side, and the leaderboard output box on the other side, or something like a kibitzer box, for the user who might be signed in) which might allow other sites to display a selected drop-down of tournament games to replay through a viewer like Viewer Deluxe chessforum or similar if it was installed externally for that site? Not all support displaying a choice of a game within a list on a viewer applet, but it might provide a way for a club or federation to point from one of their own crosstables to one of your corresponding player (pid) or game (gid) pages, so long as it doesn't interfere causing extra web traffic bottlenecks for your site.

chessgames.com: <gauer> I'm not sure if I follow you. Are you asking for a way that external sites can have a leaderboard for a current tournament, or a way that they can allow for viewing all of the games from some sort of drop down list, or something else?

The idea of making a web widget that shows a leaderboard for ongoing tournaments is a good idea; I could imagine some need for that.

And if none of the other viewers work anymore, why not just take them off the list?

Mar-19-14  davide2013: I found these two games which are interesting. I'm learning about the Nimzo-Larsen attack following the books of 2 IMs, Lakdawala, and IM Odessky.

Would it be possible to put the following games in Guess the Move?

V Artemiev vs P Ponkratov, 2013 (blitz between 2600+ rated players)

M van 't Kruijs vs K de Heer, 1851 obscurity players (but likely first game with nimzo-larsen attack, not bad at all)

SwitchingQuylthulg: <cg> Can you have a look at this game? Degraeve vs R Pogorelov, 1992

I'm 99.9% sure the moves 34.Qxd3 Qxd3 were played and have been accidentally omitted. Normally, of course, I'd submit a correction slip, but since you wrote of the Librarian that <her chess skills are maybe 1200 Elo tops, so she doesn't like making decisions that require actual chess skill, so she likes to run them by me> and this one involves a lot more chess skills than the sacrifice issues that prompted the quote above, I figured there wouldn't be much point.

I've checked all the usual databases and they all give the same game score we do, with 34.cxd3 and no queen moves. It's just that... well, the subsequent play makes perfect sense with the extra queen moves and none whatsoever without them.

Domdaniel: <davide2013> Van't Kruijs is not an obscure player. The opening 1.e3 - which I've used many times - is named after him. 1.e3 of course can often transpose into a Nimzo-Larsen.
Mar-21-14  LIFE Master AJ: Still can't get the viewers to work ...

I have done everything on the Java help page and I use Windows 7. (I don't understand this. Am I the only one here?) I also have the latest MSIE ... version 11.

chessgames.com: <Van't Kruijs is not an obscure player> When our software says that, it's merely counting the number of games on file. By its logic Captain Evans is an obscure player as well.

<Can you have a look at this game? Degraeve vs R Pogorelov, 1992> I see what you are saying. Either the queens were traded off as you suggest, or both players decided to not use their most powerful piece of the rest of the game. The former definitely seems more likely. Unfortunately when a move pair is omitted it takes a bit of finesse to mend the score, but I think in this case it's warranted. It might even be appropriate to add a note akin to "some sources omit this move pair" in case future historians note the discrepancy.

<LMAJ> I'd love to help but first I have some detailed questions to ask about what exactly is failing. As these questions wouldn't be of general interest to all users, please write to us at chess@chessgames.com.

  WCC Editing Project: <Daniel>

Please don't kill me but I just submitted a PGN a minute ago and here it is already at our website:

E R Lundin vs Smyslov, 1954

I will tell you exactly what happened, because I am mystified.

I used the "basic search box" to type in the terms "Smyslov 1956" search "smyslov 1956"

As you can see, the <Lundin-Smyslov> game is not on the resulting list of games.

Now, when I used the proper "Advanced Search box field"-

I type in "1956" into the date field.

I type in "Lundin" into one player box and "Smyslov" into the other.

And then I get this: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...

Which says

<Player search: LUNDIN
Player search: SMYSLOV
Classical games: Vasily Smyslov beat Erik Ruben Lundin 1 to 0, with 1 draw. *The figures above are based only on games present in our database which may be incomplete.

Sorry, no games at this time.
You may wish to visit the home page and try a different search.>

Now, on the proper Advanced Search fields, I type in the year "1956" and then the name "Smyslov" in the first player box. And I get this:

http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...

Still no <Lundin-Smyslov 1956> in this result.

The way I actually found the game was to type in "Lundin-Smyslov" into the basic search box.

search "Lundin-Smyslov"

<Daniel> Many apologies and I know I've been trying your patience, but what am I doing wrong on the Advanced Search box field?

Why can't I get a full list of all the games of a given player in a given year on either the Advanced Search boxes or the Basic Search box?

Please help me.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <Eddie> Searching for the right year might help :)

There is no Lundin-Smyslov 1956 in the results because that game was played in 1954.

Phony Benoni: <WCC Editing Project> Before submitting games to the database, I perform a double check by copyr/pasting the first 8-10 moves into the Opening Explorer. That does catch a few problems, and it's always interesting to see how the new game predates any other in the database by 50 years.

It doesn't take too long, but I guess I don't submit as many games as some.

Thank you! What an excellent idea. I will employ your ingenious protip before submitting any future uploads.

I submit almost no games, so extra time isn't an issue.

Mar-22-14  whiteshark: <ceegee>

Sumthin's rong with Nimzo-Indian, 4.e3, Main line with 8...dc and 9...cd (E57)

The line <1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 e6 3 Nc3 Bb4 4 e3 O-O 5 Nf3 d5 6 Bd3 c5 7 O-O Nc6 8 a3 dxc4 9> looks incomplete compared to the given diagram.

Furthermore there are no notable games.
However the OE shows 185 games Opening Explorer

I'd guess you get it and (can) fix it... ;)

Domdaniel: Helpful quote of the year: <There is no Lundin-Smyslov 1956 in the results because that game was played in 1954.>

Ooooh! Mind you, some historians now suspect that both 1954 and 1956 actually happened during 1955. That's how dull the 1950's were.
