  Domdaniel: <Annie> Like, uh, <Gabby Cravat> ... right.
Jun-18-14  zanzibar: <chessgames> - yes, that is exactly what I'm getting at, to normalize the Event/Site tags via batch processing of the tournament pgn.

I agree, a wholesale dump of MegaBase is not the idea. But handling the data in tournament "chunks" is. (Tournament processing seems the best for undercovering errors, etc. Crosstables/and general <CG> expertise are key.)

Well, let's put this on the back burner for now - but hopefully it percolates a little in the background.

Thanks, and cheers.

chessgames.com: Cool improvement on player pages:

You all know that "Notable Tournament" section, right? I think some people have noted that it sometimes prefers not-so-notable tournaments over first place finishes for some players. No longer!

Rather than sorted in chronological order, the Notable Tournaments now has the best performances at the top of the list.

Take for example Leinier Dominguez Perez. We all know he's a huge GM, but what exactly has he won?

Just read down the list, we see that he took first place at Capablanca Memorial ELITE (2004), and FIDE Grand Prix Thessaloniki (2013), and 41st Biel International Chess Festival (2008), and Magistral Ciutat de Barcelona - Casino (2006). Then finally when we get down to Casino de Barcelona (2007) we see he came in second behind Nakamura.

Some caveats:

1. The software has no concept of one first-place finish being more impressive than another. So Kamsky winning the US Championship (1991) ahead of Joel Benjamin might be listed above his 1st place finish at Las Palmas (1994) ahead of Karpov. Which victory is more impressive we leave for you to decide.

2. For tournaments that would have muddled leaderboards, like Olympiads and Knock-Out events, the software doesn't really know how to handle it. These events will show up provided the player won a sufficient number of games.

3. This feature won't be fully implemented until we reprocess every player page, and that takes a while. We've done everybody in the 2700+ club so far and are working down into the 2600s now.

Jun-19-14  shivasuri4: <CG: I think some people have noted that it sometimes prefers not-so-notable tournaments over first place finishes for some players. No longer!>

That is not always a problem, is it? A third place finish at Tata Steel Group A can be as notable to a player's career as a victory in Group C.

Jun-19-14  zanzibar: <chessgames> I hate to say it, since it seems a nice improvement but...

would it be possible to include the scores for the tournaments (+ - = %win)?

Might highlight the stellar performances even more.

On the other hand, it might add too much clutter. Hmmm

chessgames.com: We don't have those data well enough established to feel confident showing them on the player's front page. There are too many events with missing games.

Jun-19-14  Paint My Dragon: <Chessgames> <Re: notable tournaments> Hopefully that will result in a net benefit from what exists now, but I can foresee many undesirable outcomes as well.

You only have to flick through Golombek's Encyclopedia, or The Oxford Companion to Chess to see that for many players, their best results are judged to be, for example, "second behind Karpov, but ahead of Larsen and Hort". Clearly, outperforming world championship Candidates will be more notable than a whole bunch of first places achieved in their formative or autumn years, at much lesser events.

chessgames.com: I think you might be reading too much into the new feature. It just peeks at the leaderboard we have on the event (which may or may not be complete and correct) and notes how far down the player is on the list.

It's as dumb as a goldfish, whereas previously it was as dumb as a rock.

WannaBe: When will it be dumb as a turnip?
Jun-19-14  zanzibar: <RE: listing tournaments>

Maybe a valid measure, even for incomplete tournaments, would be the performance rating of the selected players.

(Historical nuances aside - it would work for modern tournaments, and might be interesting to see if it matches placement on the actual leaderboard)

Jun-20-14  frandie: Premium Chessgames Member PhilFeeley: <chancho: 11 rounds were played today, but in the leaderboard it shows only 10 games played by Magnus.>

Yeah, <CG.com> consistently gets the scoring wrong in many events, even well after the results are known. Just look at the rapids list. Sure Maggie won, but very few others have the full 15 games listed.

I've complained about this before, with no success.

chessgames.com: Of course, we want to get all of the PGN for these events as we can. We realize we are missing games.

I just located and put up the missing Carlsen game, since that's the main concern at the moment.
