 | | Penguincw: Hi <cg>. Any thoughts of hosting The Caissars chessforum this year? |
|
Jan-04-16
 | | MissScarlett: I suggest a new Caissar category - Best Poster. |
|
| Jan-04-16 | | zanzibar: How about <Best Poser>? * * * * *
I'm in advocate mode again, and will be recycling a few old ideas, and maybe coming up with a new one or two... Anyways, here's one idea - <Easter Egg Pages>: Kibitzer's Café (kibitz #167940) and here's one for <Site/Event> searching: Biographer Bistro (kibitz #12564) |
|
Jan-04-16
 | | Annie K.: That's not a bad idea at all, but then maybe we'd need one for best on-topic poster, and one for best off-topic poster, the "topic" in question being, presumably, chess. ;) |
|
| Jan-05-16 | | zanzibar: Yes, some other potential caissar's might be:
1) Off-color jokes
Certainly not a <dumb joke> award, there's absolutely zero competition for that one. 2) Generally off jokes.
I'm pretty sure <offramp> would be the unanimous winner here - nobody can offramp as good as <offramp> after all! |

 | | offramp: <zanzibar:... 2) Generally off jokes. I'm pretty sure <offramp> would be the unanimous winner here - nobody can offramp as good as <offramp> after all> Thank you, Zanzibar! I am honoured. |
|
| Jan-06-16 | | zanzibar: You're most welcome, my dear <offramp>. Not to give you a swelled head or anything, but I've always put you in a category all your own! |
|
| Jan-06-16 | | thegoodanarchist: <zanzibar:... 2) Generally off jokes. I'm pretty sure <offramp> would be the unanimous winner here - nobody can offramp as good as <offramp> after all> Another way to put it would be to say, when <offramp> is "on", nobody is as off as he is. |

| Jan-07-16 | | zanzibar: Well, back to complain mode...
Bang (kibitz #13) Can <CG> please indicate the move number for links which specify a move number? |
|
| Jan-07-16 | | zanzibar: BTW- I think the Puzzle FAQ might need to be updated to reflect the fact that you no longer need to play through the moves - but instead jump right to the position of interest. Daily Puzzle F.A.Q.
I was just wondering, who do we have to thank for this useful feature? |
|
| Jan-07-16 | | zanzibar: How am I supposed to find this game
Rosenthal / Winawer vs Anderssen / Stern, 1870
without doing a google search on:
<winawer rosenthal anderssen stern> ?? I don't believe a <CG> EZ search with the four names succeeds. |
|
Jan-07-16
 | | Annie K.: <zanz: <Can <CG> please indicate the move number for links which specify a move number?>> Yeah, I asked for that too, it would be good to have that detail shown. <How am I supposed to find this game [...]> My approach would be: take the rarest of the names (I picked Winawer) and enter that name alone in the Advanced (not EZ) Search player box. http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... Only three lines come up:
Simon Winawer
Bird / Winawer / Blackburne
Rosenthal / Winawer
And when you click on the last one, you'll find the link to the game you're looking for. :) |
|
| Jan-07-16 | | zanzibar: <AnnieK> yes, you're a resourceful "fellow", and that's not a bad idea. But it's not exactly <E-Z>. Here's an interesting wrinkle, compare two <E-Z> searches: * * * * *
<Winawer / Rosenthal> search "winawer %2F rosenthal" 289 hits, desired game missing
* * * * *
<Rosenthal / Winawer> search "rosenthal %2F winawer" 1 hits, desired game found
* * * * *
The search should be smart enough to handle this simple monkey business. And I would think it should find the game given the four names as well. That is, to be true to its <E-Z> name claim. |

| Jan-07-16 | | zanzibar: I call attention to this post:
Kibitzer's Café (kibitz #168167) So, why doesn't <CG> contain all of <TWIC>? Are there copyright issues?
* * * * *
I know there might be conflicts, given that <CG> often distributes on-going tournament games before <TWIC> gets to publishing them. But, I also know that such games often need cleaning up, and can lead to erroneous results otherwise. <TWIC> does a great job at cleaning up games. But <CG>'s structure makes such clean-up more difficult. I've often felt that there should be a two-stage process for live games. A preliminary stage, then a <TWIC>-quality or better stage. None of this is relevant for the many <TWIC> tournaments that <CG> lacks, which can just be incorporated wholesale (that is, once players are matched up correctly). |

| Jan-07-16 | | zanzibar: <tpstar> posted a summary review of the DB situation here: Kibitzer's Café (kibitz #168179) I posted my initial thoughts in reply here:

| Jan-08-16 | | whiteshark: <ceegee> Happy New Year, y'all! re: advanced search, main page
Is it possible to add "game ends with checkmate" in the <result is> drop-down menue? |
|
| Jan-08-16 | | zanzibar: <whiteshark> that's a nice idea, and should be easy to impliment. SCID seems to be missing such a feature (but is otherwise fairly good in the search department). However, one can compensate - by looking for the text "#" in the PGN (SCID can search do a general search on text in the PGN). There's a drawback though, as it might find games which don't end in mate but have subvariations that do. (Also, searching for "# 0-1" or "# 1-0" might find Black/White mates, but would might such games when the last move have a comment, etc. And, unfortunately, SCID doesn't do regexps for this search) |

 | | chessgames.com: Whiteshark, your request amuses me because it echoes the very first feature request that Chessgames ever received on the forums, before this page even existed, way back in March 2002: <dippel: Is it possible to search and find only games that ended with a mate? E.g. Alekhine plays white and mates his opponent in less than 20 moves? That would be a nice search tool!> (Kibitzer's Café (kibitz #45)) At the time I said I didn't want to attempt that idea because there are far too many games that don't properly end in the # symbol, but I believe that problem has been mostly rectified. |

 | | chessgames.com: On the topic of why we have less than a million games and not gazillions of them, not much has changed our opinions, but I have three things to add: <1> Zanzibar suggested "if it's good enough for TWIC it should be good enough for Chessgames." I strongly disagree with this. Understand how TWIC works. I could mail Mark Crowther a PGN of a local high school event, and as long as the PGN is in good shape, and there's not too many players with 3-digit ratings, he'd be happy to merge it into his next release. He effectively has no criteria for worthiness other than whether the PGN is syntactically correct. I am not criticizing Mr. Crowther for this approach—I praise him for it! He wants to disseminate as much chess as possible and leave the job of sorting the gold from the dross to others. I wouldn't have him change a thing. <2> From time to time we resynchronize with TWIC by seeking recent games by highly rated players that are missing in our database. Ideally there should be none but quite often we find that we missed a fairly major event or two and insert the games after the fact. <3> Most importantly, please trust me that one day you (Zanzibar et al) will get what you want: the ability to look up millions of games here, new games, amateur games, fairly high level games that we slip through the cracks, internet games, you name it. We will still retain the concept of the "master database" but allow other methods to get to the vast ocean of secondary games. |
|
| Jan-09-16 | | zanzibar: As concerns TWIC:
I'm going to post a little more on the topic, but I'd like a little clarification first. Can <chessgames> point me to a specific example of a TWIC with a tournament that you consider substandard? I tried looking for high school matches, or very weak tournaments and haven't found any such examples. Of course, TWIC is a huge project, and I admittedly only looked at a few downloads with this particular goal in mind. |
