 | | Stonehenge: OK, thanks :) |

| Jan-27-17 | | MuzioFan: I really like the team games (both "World vs player" and "Team White vs Team Black"), but haven't seen either in a while. Is there information on when the next team game might be? Or would it be possible to get a notification when signup starts? |

| Jan-28-17 | | Tiggler: One week without <chrisowen> on POTD, and I miss him. Did we lose the best and longest running puzzle on this or any other chess site? Too bad. And the argument about him using a bot is very weak. If you search english literature for use of "exotic" words and large vocabulary, the winner is always Shakespeare. |

 | | OhioChessFan: To review, my original comment about him spamming the site was in jest, and comparing the strange bio written by the snerts Daniel referenced. Several years ago, I thought his stuff was genius. It's not as good now as it was then, as there is really not a narrative to be found. The lack of verbs is one specific that makes it less appealing. I also don't like how long some of them are, sometimes taking 2 or 3 posts to convey as they are so long. But there's no way that is pure gibberish. I always loved it, only like it now, but I sure hope an offhand comment had nothing to do with the recent disappearance. |

| Jan-28-17 | | Tiggler: <Ohio> Not your fault, for sure. Who owns the copyright for <chrisowens> posts? Clearly Chris does, but they are in the public domain. An anthology is called for: I'd title it Puzzle of the Day. Could be the literary event of the year. |

 | | Stonehenge: I'm sure this is a known bug, but cannot a solution be found? http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... |
|

 | | chessgames.com: That bug is literally as old as Chessgames itself. Sure, I've thought of ways to solve it. The 60 second fix would be to slap the MySQL function DISTINCT() on the searches. But the problem is that would make ALL searches a little bit slower; and that's unconscionable. I've thought of robust solutions, and I'm sure I could do it, but I'm not actually sure how frequently that issue comes up — so the project has been lingering on the to-do list for years. It's been years since I looked at it; I should revisit the code. It may be easier than I imagine. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Who owns the copyright for <chrisowens> posts? Clearly Chris does, but they are in the public domain.> I don't believe something can be copyrighted and in the public domain at the same time. We do get about one or two complaints a month regarding <CO> posts, usually from new members who think they are doing us a service by pointing out what they perceive as vandalism. Such members rarely know about the ignore feature, so it makes it an opportune time to show them the ropes. So after dozens of complaints I attempted to reach out to <CO> to learn what his intentions are. Is it an act, a joke, an art-form, a secret code, or what? I'd really like to know. I've exchanged emails with him many years back, and those emails were 100% lucid. In any case, he's by no means banned. |

| Jan-29-17 | | Monocle: So... er... with it being 2017 and all, are there any plans to modernize the chessgames website? No offense, but the current design looks like something out of the 90s, and the html tables based layout is kind of embarrassing in this day and age. |

 | | chessgames.com: <MuzioFan: I really like the team games (both "World vs player" and "Team White vs Team Black"), but haven't seen either in a while. Is there information on when the next team game might be?> You refer to Chessgames Challenge and that's a good topic. We haven't had one in far too long. I believe we might try to take up Arno Nickel on an offer he made a long time ago to play a game of what he calls "Lasker Chess." More info: Arno Nickel (kibitz #479). At first I was a little skeptical, but I see now that an advantage of Lasker Chess is that nobody (to my knowledge) has written software to play it. That means we would effectively be playing a "Battle of the Brains" against a correspondence grandmaster, which in my opinion is a lot more fun then hundreds of Rybkas and Houdinis ganging up against a GM. If we can't schedule Arno for early 2017 we should fall back on our rotation of (1) "Normal (computers allowed) game", (2) "Battle of the Brains", and (3) "Special." We're on #3 right now, the "special." That can be anything from Fischerandom, to our own Lasker Chess duel, or we could do another "Thematic Challenge" (where a voting stage determines which of several dubious openings would be played). Alternately, a chess variant I find very interesting is "Three Check Chess" (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three...). As far as chess variants go, I find this one quite fun as it brings out the swashbuckling nature of chess very vividly. In 3-check chess, queen sacs are almost as common as pawn gambits. If anybody is a fan, let us know: we'd like to gauge interest in the idea. |

 | | chessgames.com: <are there any plans to modernize the chessgames website> No offense taken, and the answer is "yes" — we are currently redoing several important pages of the site for mobile compatibility which entails replacing all of the tables with more modern techniques. The improvements will first only be obvious on mobile devices, but ultimately the goal is to make it responsive across all platforms. |

Please make sure next time you have live games the site isn't so slow anymore. :( |

 | | chessgames.com: <Stonehenge> Yes, I know, I've been in a struggle all morning to figure out what the problem is. I don't want to jinx it, but I think I might have found the issue. It seems a little better already for me. |

| Jan-29-17 | | Boomie: Has anyone found where the winner of Tata Steel (Challengers) Tournament is announced? Was there a rapid/blitz playoff between Jones and Ragger or what? |
|
| Jan-29-17 | | TheFocus: <Boomie> It was Gawain Jones on tie-breaks. |
|
| Jan-29-17 | | morfishine: <CG> I see your point. I hope you see my point, mainly that I spend considerable time perusing this site for uwanted posts and report them instantly An unrewarded and unrecognized occupation :)

| Jan-30-17 | | LucB: I have a question: from the Tata Steel website I downloaded the pgn file for the 9-round "Tatal Steel C" tournament. It contains games by Praggnanandhaa amongst others. What steps must be done to get these on this site? |

 | | chessgames.com: <What steps must be done to get these on this site?> In general, nothing, because every few months we go back and grab the second-tier events (usually from TWIC) to fill in our gaps. The C-Group was pretty interesting this year so I have no problem pushing that one through ahead of schedule. |
|
Jan-30-17
 | | chessgames.com: Actually, I can't easily locate that PGN from the site — so if you would please email it to me (chess@chessgames.com) I'll get to it shortly. Thanks in advance. |
|
| Jan-30-17 | | LucB: <CG> Cool; thanks. Looking forward to it! |
