I find <zanzibar's> appraisal of <Tony> to be the most accurate. That said, I also liked <Tony> and I wish he was still here. I feel bad about the times I fought with him over the <Wesley So> page, and for the life of me I can't see what good ever came of that discord. |

 | | saffuna: <tpstar> also donated a number of free memberships each year, as I remember. A good guy and a gentle man...if you agreed with him. |

| Jul-31-21 | | Total Jim: < ... and for the life of me I can't see what good ever came of that discord.> ... now THERE'S a sermon ...
indeed, how much does the general day-to-day discord that goes on around here actually achieve? ... |

 | | saffuna: <...and for the life of me I can't see what good ever came of that discord.> I guess. The Wesley So biography remains a highly inaccurate summary of his career. |

<Jim> Excellent news! You have garnered your first official "fan member" in <Total Jim>. Even better, his first post is both trenchant and relevant. I do not recall ever seeing a "fan member" account before at this website. I'd like to say I'm not jealous, but I'd be lying... User: Total Jim |

<Messiah>
What if they changed it to Rhythmic Jim Gnostics? Might that have more appeal for you brah. |

 | | MissScarlett: The Opening Explorer has finally been updated (a regular occurrence, one hopes, in future), but the attendant diagrams don't appear to be showing for positions resulting from newly uploaded games. |
|

 | | MissScarlett: Here's an example to show what I mean:
Opening Explorer |
|
| Aug-03-21 | | Z truth 000000001: Are you really still using <CG> for opening explorations <Missy>?! Don't you want a little more fine tuning, and timeliness, for your trees? |
|
Aug-03-21
 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<Z> Which opening explorer do you recommend? The only other one I know of is over on <kingscrusher's> website. |
|
Aug-03-21
 | | MissScarlett: Let's suppose he's talking about professional products such as ChessBase. And were I a chess professional, I would agree with him. I can't pretend to an archaeological fascination with the openings, but when I submit nineteenth century games, I usually run them through <OE> to get a better historical feel for the game. I will confess to also consulting <Opening Explorer> recently in a blitz game on <lichess>. I emerged from the opening with a better position, but ended up losing on time. |
|
| Aug-03-21 | | Z truth 000000001: <JFQ> My one-stop shopping is SCID, including openings. <<Missy> I can't pretend to an archaeological fascination with the openings, but when I submit nineteenth century games, I usually run them through <OE> to get a better historical feel for the game.> Yes, but with SCID I can filter out the opening tree to a specific player, or rating range, or time period. The tree updating is feature-rich and done very quickly, even for a DB with 4 million games. I can even stay current by updating it with games according to my schedule and needs. Well worth taking a few minutes to learn. |
|
Aug-03-21
 | | MissScarlett: <Zed>, do you have some sort of direct link with the <SCID> program? <Miss Susan>, I'm not sure of the practicality or even the legality, but couldn't the company purchase subscriptions to online newspaper archives and genealogical services, and share access with a select group of volunteer editors? |
|
| Aug-03-21 | | Z legend of CG: Only a small contribution to the FEN start dialog (it's got a bit (or a lot) of my design, but Fulvio's code). But I directly use it pretty much every day.

<Missy> asks for this, but won't republish the Public Domain sources of his own research for others?! Hmmm... . |
|
Aug-03-21
 | | MissScarlett: Doesn't seem very user-friendly to me. I can't even work out how to nest the windows. For inputting/copying PGNs I use something called <ChessPad 2.0>. |
|
Aug-03-21
 | | MissScarlett: <t won't republish the Public Domain sources of his own research for others?> Not sure what this means, but if you want to know something, just ask. |
|
| Aug-03-21 | | Z legend of CG: Different strokes for different folks.
I admit there's a learning curve, but not quite as high as Chessbase's (at least imo). But at the risk of repeating myself, it's really worth the time. The window stuff is maybe the most confusing, but it always is no matter the app. |
