jessicafischerqueen: <Doggimus> You can post questions here and if we figure what we come up with is relevant to Petrov's page, we can just post it over there after. I don't think technical stuff like how you and I are writing the bios belongs on a player page, but historical stuff related directly to Petrov certainly does.

Eventually I'm going to post large parts of our conversation about the <Capa> book over at the Johnny Alekhine and Frank Capra pages.

I see you and <Ohio> are turned up to 11. MEN AT WORK it's good to see.

Feb-07-13  Thanh Phan: Found an interesting article about the army of the Mongol Empire being defeated twice by Korea.

The leader was Lý Long Tường. A prince of the Lý Dynasty of Đại Việt or Vietnam, who became a refuge and settled in Haeju, Hwanghae, a part of Korea. http://eyedrd.org/2011/06/korean-le...

Feb-08-13  twinlark: Hi Jess.

About the Vladimir Petrov bio...sorry to take so long to get back to you.

It seems that the use of 2d and 3d is probably deliberate, so I won't give it more than a passing mention, except to say that tuppence and thrippence is probably obsolete currency these days. I could be wrong though.

Only other thing is that the first mention of Koblents and Keres in the first para are not hyper-linked till later, Keres later in the paragraph and Koblents under "Life as a Soviet Master".

I'd be interested in the tuppenny abbreviation, as I can't say I've ever seen it used as a convention in English, but no biggie. As for the rest, maybe such stuff is too trivial to mention, and would it be better if I just save some time and effort by making such minor adjustments myself?

Great bio. I'm so glad to see Petrov's legacy being rehabilitated. Such a sad tragic waste of a human being in the gulag meatgrinder, along with so many others.

Feb-08-13  hms123: <jess> I just read the Petrov biography. It is phenomenally good.

I prefer: Although he joined the ranks of the world chess elite in 1937, he is perhaps less well known than he should be, because he was arrested by the NKVD in 1942 and imprisoned for the rest of his life.

OhioChessFan: I'm going to sleep on "should be, because he was arrested" or "should be, since he was arrested". Neither one seems exactly right. Maybe even "should be, due to being arrested"
Feb-09-13  Thanh Phan: <Although he joined the ranks of the world chess elite from 1937-1942 he is perhaps less well known than he should be, because he was arrested by the NKVD and imprisoned for the rest of his life.> A possible alternate wording,

Having joined the ranks of the world chess elite from 1937-1942, he is perhaps less well known after being arrested in 1942 and imprisoned for the rest of his life. He was subsequently erased from Soviet chess history.

jessicafischerqueen: <The Dawg> Thanks for those contributions to <Petrov> page, you are right about the "first hyperlink" emendations which I'll do if I get time today.

We've had the Thruppence discussion before, last year in fact. The number additions should be in superscript case, 1/2 size. Most computer keyboards don't allow it, but I'm going to find them already done on some other webpage and cut and past them onto <Petrov> page. When they're in proper form then "Thruppencers" won't confuse them for a monetary symbol.

  Annie K.: Can I play too? ;)

Just at a first look, in

'Stanley knew Loewenthal was a Hungarian chess master and <he> ushered him into the fold of the New York chess circle.'

- I think that 'he' could be dropped.

Otherwise looks good. :)
