Maybe not their favorit past time, but you never know with those pesky Swedes...

 | | OhioChessFan: Per the Canadian news report, and the appeal to Sister Julie, I am reminded of my Catholic grade school days, and Sister Julia. She arrived to teach second grade the year I started third, so I never had the pleasure of her pronouncements. Her students repeated the mantra "Sister Julia says......" constantly. They were usually outrageous stories meant to scare the children out of their minds in case they took notice of the opposite sex. One typical example would be "Sister Julia says two fifth graders were kissing. The next day, the girl woke up with the sign of the cross burned into her skin." |

Is there a difference between a <match> and a <set match>? |
|
Mar-29-14
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Karpova>
I don't know, to be honest.
If forced to guess, I'd say a "set match" had a limited number of games? Remember some of the historical matches had no limit to the number of games. I bet that <crawfb5> knows the definite answer to your question though. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: My dear <Shams>
How well you know me...
Even with your fine clue, I had to look 3 or 4 times until I noticed the Vancouver newspaper listing in that horrifying story you posted. Good Heavens... |

LOL! Brilliant, thank you! |

| Mar-29-14 | | Karpova: <Jess>
Thanks! The question arose here A van Foreest vs Olland, 1913 and I've also come across it some times, one example is <In a set match, Morphy would beat anybody alive today.> by Fischer - http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/... Perhaps there is a difference to "match", but this could also have been lost. |
|
| Mar-29-14 | | thegoodanarchist: <Karpova: ... one example is <In a set match, Morphy would beat anybody alive today.> by Fischer - http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/>... I find it hilarious that Fischer went on and on about Morphy not having a stamp to commemorate him! Reminds me of the Alan character played by Zack Galafianakis in The Hangover movies - completely obsessed by some off-the-wall item. |

One thing you have to admit about Bobby- he loved chess, and great chess players. That's something you can never take away from him or his legacy. |

Thanks for that excellent BELGIAN TV live performance of "Twilight Alehouse." This track is of special interest to me because it's one of the few lyrics that <Gabriel> wrote directly about a contemporary social issue- alcoholism, in this case. The only other social issue he ever wrote directly about for <Genesis> was "Get 'em out by Friday," which is about evil Landlords kicking deadbeat tenants into the street. And then using scientists to create "half sized people" so the landlords could cram more of them in the same building. Here is <Get 'em out by Friday> (good): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFnN... |

| Apr-10-14 | | playground player: <jessicafischerqueen> Dear Jess, I want to give you a special heads-up: I have just started writing my next book, <The Temple>, Book No. 8 in my Bell Mountain series. It's good to be back in Obann!
<Mrs. PGP> pointed out yesterday that <The Palace> is my 10th published novel. I wonder how many better writers than I weren't able to get 10 books into print. Of course, this is counting my four horror novels in the 1980s, the sort of thing I don't write anymore. Well, I can hardly wait to see what unexpected twists and turns the story will take, this time. This is the work I love best, and it's good to be getting back to it. |

| Apr-15-14 | | Alien Math: Eye-tracking software helps piano students learn
Besides accuracy and tempo, Smith listens for pausing, regression (playing a wrong note, and playing it again), fixation, length of fixation and ability to read ahead. The eye-tracking software reports exactly where the student's eyes spend time. Advanced players tend to move forward linearly with clean up and down movements. Novice players? Their eyes are all over the place, including going back to mistakes, glancing off the page, lingering on troublesome notes.

Gmail does scan all emails, new Google terms clarify
“This is not the worst thing Google does,” said Jim Killock, executive director of the Open Rights Group. “But like anything like this, if people are concerned about it they should be able to completely switch it off if they want to.” Such scanning and indexing of emails, which cannot be fully turned off, could be in violation of a US law called Ferpa, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, which is the main law guarding student educational records and the law being used as the basis for a lawsuit filed against Google in California. “It is the amount of information they hold on individuals that should be concerning us, both because that is attractive to government but also sometimes that information leaks out in various ways like the NSA’s use of cookies in general as a means to target users,” Killock explained. ~ http://www.theguardian.com/technolo... |

| Apr-16-14 | | Alien Math: The latest update for Java 7 (the version most users will have installed) brings the program to Java 7 Update 55. Those who’ve chosen to upgrade to the newer, “feature release” version of Java — Java 8 — will find fixes available in Java 8 Update 5 (Java 8 doesn’t work on Windows XP). If you really need and use Java for specific Web sites or applications, take a few minutes to update this software. Updates are available from Java.com or via the Java Control Panel. Keep in mind that updating via the control panel will auto-select the installation of the Ask Toolbar, so de-select that if you don’t want the added crapware. http://krebsonsecurity.com/2014/04/... |
