<Karpova> No, I hadn't seen that valuable Edward Winter note about a book I was about to, but no longer will, buy. No sourcing? What are they thinking. It's the 21st century and chess historians and publishers still can't get it through their heads: no sourcing = don't publish it. Period. If I want light entertainment or fantasy I'll watch cartoons. Thanks for the warning.
On happier news, here is a TOP SECRET chess history song written mainly by Peter Gabriel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yUN... |

<caucho> I remember that <BJ and the Bear> song from "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"- thanks for reminding me. I was trying to find the closing scene from that fine movie, where I long ago lifted the "I thought you secretly wanted me to tell you" line from. Sadly, the copyright police seem to have exterminated this scene from <Screwed Tube>. So instead, I'll post the notorious "Toreador" scene from the Good the Bad and the Ugly, scored by the great <Ennio Macaroni>: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXld... |

| Sep-21-14 | | twinlark: Hi Jess
Just thought I'd touch base and let you know the latest offering from Aussie cinema. There's a six part series of one hour per episode called <The Code> that started screening on TV tonight. It will be posted on the ABC website tomorrow for anyone who missed it. In the next day, it will be available at http://iview.abc.net.au/. It is a political thriller with a decent cast including David Wenham, Lucy Lawless, Aaron Pederson and a bunch of other talents. Here's some more info from the official website: http://www.abc.net.au/tv/programs/t... Enjoy! |
|
| Sep-21-14 | | twinlark: In fact, it's already been posted: http://iview.abc.net.au/programs/co... |

If I want light entertainment or fantasy I'll watch cartoons.> On the other hand, Brian Almeida considers this book to be excellent - see his review: http://www.chesscafe.com/text/revie... and, if you are interested, A J Gillam's response to that review: http://www.chesscafe.com/skittles/s... Also note that Winter says that <proper sourcing> was missing, not <sourcing>. The book may be of value still. |

heh thanks for the great <Warren Z-bone> track. Yep Halloween is just around the corner, and I've already taken to scaring my students on a daily basis. They only thing keeping them from telephoning the police is the thought of all the candy I'm going to give them. <toboe> Here is another excellent <Bowie> track from the "Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert", in which he plays with others who did the same song on their records: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJ6T... |

Thanks <Doggimus> for the heads up- I did indeed catch the first episode, but I'm afraid I didn't like it well enough to be interested in watching future episodes. Unrealistic dialogue is a death knell for a plot set up that requires verisimilitude. I have yet to see an Aussie TV show that I really got into, which is a bit strange given how much I love the cinema. Might you give me a few recommendations of Aussie series past and present? I may well be proceeding from a position of simple ignorance on this topic. |

<Ohio> heh...
You've reminded me of something my Dad used to quote to people, generally at the most inappropriate moments possible: "Don't shoot the piano player in a whore house." |

<Karpova> Thanks for the extra links on "the book." I'm still going to wait. I may or may not buy it in future. I have to admit that I loved Andy's new <Botvinnik> biography, even though it's not sourced properly, as usual for him. Sad to say. For narrative, he's far and away my favorite chess history writer. I'll see how interesting <Mr. Gillam's> "Ostend Tournament Book" is when it arrives. |

<Unrealistic dialogue is a death knell for a plot set up that requires verisimilitude.> Not sure what you mean. It's relevance to the plot, the way the dialogue meshes with the plot or the idiom? Seemed all right to me, and I'm generally fussy about Aussie stuff. The most unrealistic bit I saw was the brothers' car parking in front of Parliament House (not allowed). And the food vendor parked under King's Avenue Bridge (also not allowed). <I have yet to see an Aussie TV show that I really got into, which is a bit strange given how much I love the cinema.> Guess they're not everyone's cuppa chai.
Anyhoo, no wukkers cob. Letcha know if anything new peers over the parapet. |
