<Hozzer> I hope your Darby is off to a better start than Spurs or MANUal Labor. On the other hand there is new life in the league as always. I'm watching <Frank Lamprey> this moment, 5 minutes in and already <Tammy Abraham> has become the first woman ever to score for Chelsea!! Then a few moments later Norwich responds. Enigmatic Finnish striker <Pokemon>, already in it for the Golden Boot, slides the ball back to <Tom Cuntwell> and it's promising to be a cracking match, only 5 minutes in so far. |

<Tim O'Shanter> There would be few more auspicious monikers than <The Craw>, who shirley must be considered one of the toughest punners in cg.com history. You've gone head to head with him in many a closely contested comical contretemps, if I have my Dutch correct. |

Aug-29-19 | | Paint My Dragon: <Jessicated Coconut> Well, I ended up spending an interesting couple of days at the Northumbrian Masters in the middle of a heatwave. It was good to chat with a few players and enthusiasts who I’ve known since we were all in short pants. Tim, the organizer (still wearing his short pants oddly enough) made a huge effort, even ferrying the visiting grandmasters to the surrounding Castles and English Heritage sites in his/their spare time. I must admit, watching the play unfold made me yearn for a return to playing chess tournaments, although it would be a lot of hard work as most of my opening theory was busted twenty years ago. <Chess history> I keep finding references to a book called ‘Chess Artists’ by Harry Golombek (1990, Pergamon). There is one copy at Amazon.com at $704, but otherwise, it seems to have disappeared into a void. I’ll sound out the ever resourceful Tony, but right now it feels like this might be a no-hoper. Ever heard of it? <Footy> Blimey. Now it turns out that <Sanchez> goes on loan, but ManU keep paying £300k of his £400k a week salary. Talk about throwing good money after bad. It just shows how complex and fraught with difficulty the transfer market has become. Apparently, <Pogba> couldn’t go to Real Madrid, because he doesn’t get on with <Zidane>. Meanwhile, <Balotelli> is still being passed from club to club – somewhere there’s an optimist who thinks he will eventually come good! Incidentally, either I was snoozing during weeks one and two, or it completely slipped my mind that <Moira> sometimes masquerades under his superhero name <Mucus>. You were very good not to call me an idiot while I was making out that he was always absent. He even scored a goal. I may need to check if the relentlessly ever present <Mucus Moira> is a prospective target for my ailing fantasy squad. <Aberama Gold> Early days, but the new <Peaky Bs> is indeed pure gold – you’ve got some very enjoyable catching up to do! |

Aug-29-19 | | Paint My Dragon: Two curious facts to ponder:
When we say something needs <licking into shape>, that's because baby bears pop out of the womb as fluffy, shapeless objects and mummy bears literally have to lick them into some kind of shape. In most cases, the shape of a bear. <Gary Oldman> is younger than <Gary Numan>. Who'd have known? |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Portobello Mushrooms> I have to say I'm envious that you have time and opportunity to see live chess events of master strength. I barely have enough time to make it to chess club let alone travel all the way to "the city" to see one of only two strong events that it hosts. I have never heard of <Hairy Golombek's> "Chess Artists," although I own several of his books. He's one of the few player/historians who has provided any detailed information about the fabled Mir Sultan Khan. They roomed together for a time in Blighty. I can assure you that no Golombek book, or any other book, is worth 400 dollars. Maybe "The Necronomicon," although that volume benefits from not actually existing in the first place. <George Lucas> is one of the only Spurs player with that latent dash of quality. He was player of the season last year for me. I still can't get over just how poorly both of our clubs played last week. There are definitely serious problems with both, problems that I don't see any easy answer to. Given the current state of affairs. <Hugo Sanchez> has long since seen better days and he is also not worth 400 dollars, let alone the 4 million he pockets from MANUal labor. I would have to re-watch all previous episodes of <PEAKY AND THE BEAN> to make sense of the nude season, though I'm sure you're right. I will likely get around to this though. Interestingly, in Canada the bears come out "fully formed." This fact accounts for the idiomatic term we use for bear birthing: "Phwoaaar nice rack." I didn't nu aboot Old man and Nu man but that is indeed a puzzler. Less puzzling, sadly, than how MANUal Life Insurance Comapany and Spurless will manage to negotiate the next few weeks, let alone the whole season. This week is international break for the OOFA groping games? I would check online but as usual I'm too scared of spoilers. |

<Tim> Very good call. I'm a big Judy fan as well. What a mensch! She had no filter- she just said what she was thinking, in public, without worrying about it. Landed her in a lot of hot water, but you really can't buy that eh? |

Aug-30-19 | | Boomie: <Jessimus>
Great talents like Garland should be given a wide berth by schleps like us. She was singing professionally with her sisters since she was about 4. Talent requires long hours of labor to manifest. I'm not sure what I just said but it sounds great on TV. |

Aug-31-19 | | thegoodanarchist: Dang, looks like I missed out on the Ja Alai discussion 10 days ago. It's hard to find good Ja Alai discussions in my neighborhood. Whenever Rev. Spooner went to a Chinese restaurant, he'd always order the wide frontons, so he must have been a big fan of Ja Alai. |

Aug-31-19 | | thegoodanarchist: <OhioChessFan: This may interest you. Or not. Whatever. Anyway. I have started sending in edits to history.com of their online stories. In particular, I have persuaded them 3 times to remove the word "however" from one of their online stories! I can die a happy man.> LOL it's the small things in life...
However, your work is not finished. |

Aug-31-19 | | Paint My Dragon: <... the OOFA groping games?> Yes, the Prem is suspended and it's all aboard the Euros: Saturday is <England-Bulgaria>,
Tuesday is <England-Kosovo> Maybe we'll leave European football after <Brexit>. Boris Johnson's adoration of the Trumpster might lead us to play the Pan-American Games in future. We might also swap sides in golf's Ryder Cup. These scenarios are of course fictitious nonsense, but the agony is real enough. |
