Anand goes 25-1 in a simul in Czech Republic. His only loss follows. With the blunder 22 ♖c1-e1?, Anand missed that he had <OVERLOADED> his White b3-pawn, which must now both <INTERPOSE> the White b2-bishop *and* <PROTECT> the c4-square. This <PIN> allowed the crushing 22 ... c5-c4!, and Black had a pair of overwhelming <CONNECTED PASSERS>. 21 ... ♕d8-b6

 | | LIFE Master AJ: Game Collection: "The 100 Best Games" (of the 20th Century). New GC.
I plan on finishing it later, worked about 3 hours tonight on it. |
|
Jul-05-11
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <AJ> great idea- particularly with regard to <Andy Soltis>. He gets a rough ride from some of the critics- but he's done a lot of hard and valuable work in his chess books. I have several of his books- "Fischer Rediscovered" was the second Fischer book I ever bought, Gligoric's book "Fischer-Spassky 1972" was the first. I don't have Soltis' Best 100 Games, though, so this collection will be new to me. This game here I hadn't seen before- wonderful technique by <Ragozin> *after* the fireworks- Lilienthal vs Ragozin, 1935
<Ragozin> moves his Queen twice in the closing stages to carefully deny <Lilienthal> a draw by perpetual. Stunning, stunning game.
I look forward to finding more gems like this in the games collection. Fantastic man. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> Even making allowance for the charisma-fuelled hyperbole, that article neatly captures the difference between Fischer and 'mere' grandmasters. I don't believe he was unique in the depth and speed of his 'sight of board' ability, though. Kasparov certainly had it. Karpov, Tal, and Anand are up there too, no? Perhaps Alekhine, Capablanca and even Morphy, though the further back in time we go, the more subjective the evaluations. Does Carlsen have *it*? Maybe not quite yet. Others - such as Ivanchuk - seem to have the instant vision without all of the full champion components. I recall an incident in a post-mortem during the 1992 Fischer-Spassky rematch, when Spassky, having lost a game, suggested a possible improvement -- and Fischer brushed it aside with something like "No, Qf5 is a killer". Of course both were past their best, perhaps significantly so in Spassky's case, but it seemed to illustrate some sort of qualitative gulf between their respective abilities. As you know, I normally avoid these <who was best?> debates because (a) conclusions tend to be subjective and partisan, (b) they go round in endlessly undecidable circles, and (c) some tedious person will disagree. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Or even persons.
<Dom> I love to try to understand Bobby's games and those of other great masters. But you know what, I'm forever in that state <Fred Waitzkin> is in. At least as played by the great <Joe Montegna> in "Searching for Bobby Fischer," with the equally great <Ben Kingsley> as <Bruce Pandolfini>, and of course a young <Kate Beckinsale> as a wastepaper basket. Fred Waitzkin: "Josh is playing better than ever."
Bruce Pandolfini: "And how would you know that"? |
|

 | | LIFE Master AJ: <Jess> If my game collections bring ANYONE even a few moments of pleasure and/or discovery ... then I am happy. |
|
Jul-05-11
 | | Domdaniel: Fine actors, those folk. I've even interviewed one or two of 'em -- OK, just Ben Kingsley. Did you know that all of them are victims of *the curse of the misplaced space* -- as when "A noirish thriller" becomes "An Oirish thriller" ...? So 'Ben' was originally Benk Ingsley, half-Turk and half Cockney, like one of the ethnically challenged psychos in the BBC's Londonistan soap, Eastenders. 'Kate' was previously *Katebec Kinsale* and 'Joe' was *Jo Emonteg Na*. Which means 'Sweetheart of the Moon' in Old Manitouvian Na-Dene. And if Josh is playing better than ever, how come young *ever* managed to swindlemate him? *Nobody* is better than ever. Not in the long run.
My Regards, Ma'am.

Jul-05-11 | | Ragh: < jessicafischerqueen: He probably didn't pay the rent on it. Well you see that's the problem with internet work.
Think about it- that guy built an amazing website right? There is no paper book about the chess olympics like his website. But books go in libraries. The library doesn't disappear. But a website- if the person can't afford the rent- it's gone. If the person just gets tired of paying for it, or tired of the project- it's gone. If the person dies- God forbid- and doesn't arrange for someone else to tend the site- it's gone.> If you think you have lost a site due to this "rent" problem, then you can always go to the Internet WayBack Machine, which is sort of like a time machine, and retrieve how that website was on any particular day. You can get web pages upto 5 years ago, I guess. http://web.archive.org |
|
Jul-05-11 | | Ragh: As an example, here is how our cg website was about 10 years ago: http://web.archive.org/web/20020126... |
|
Jul-05-11
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Ragh> thank you for helping. Sadly, this method does not help on <chessmetrics>. WAY BACK MACHINE will call up some pages, but there is not enough archived to make the site usable. You can't click on a player and find his event history- which is the main function I use at that site. It's been down for four days now.
<Ragh> why is there no internet chatter on why the site is down? Doesn't anyone care about Jeff Sonas and his incredible project? I am so sad about this. Do you think the site will come back? |
|
Jul-05-11 | | Albertan: Yes Jessica, I agree with you 100% regarding what you said below. It is sad that this type of situation exists online, however it is very difficult to keep maintaining a website all the time, unless you have more than one person doing this for a website. It would be sad if Chessmetrics is gone for sure! Having seen the magazine "Inside chess" go from a bi-weekly printed magazine, to a website, and now only to "a best of Inside Chess" at the Chess cafe website, it seems that many chess sites simply do not get the support or financial support necessary from chess players to keep them operating. |
|
Jul-05-11
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Albertan> well that's the thing= I don't know how much it costs <Jeff Sonas> just to keep his site open- but I wasn't kidding I would be happy to help him do that financially. Do you= or anyone else here- have an email address for Mr. Sonas? I want to contact him if it's possible. |

Yes it's wonderful photos, with proper Hungarian pronunciation of their names, by <Annie K>: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis... Actually if you go to <Annie Kappel's> player page you'll see she looks a bit like a Polgar herself. Annie Kappel Possibly she is a fourth sister, and just hasn't told anyone yet. Here is Annie's youtube channel with many, many more accurate pronunciations of chessmaster's names: http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnieK1... |
|
Jul-06-11 | | Ragh: <Jess> <Sadly, this method does not help on <chessmetrics>.> Some of the links are working though. The way back machine says that http://db.chessmetrics.com/ has been crawled 81 times going all the way back to May 4, 2006. Source: http://wayback.archive.org/web/2009... <why is there no internet chatter on why the site is down?> Sonas' latest article on chessbase was less than a month ago http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail... |

Jul-06-11 | | Boomie: <Jessie>
I ommitted two obvious choices from my DramCom Boobie list. Perhaps I knew intuitively that you had already checked them out. Eureka - A motley collection of geniuses conspire to create mayhem and then make things right in one hour. A fine cast including Linda Farina Dog Chow's sister keeps the story moving along at a fine pace. NCIS - Wildly popular show featuring a strong cast and great writing. Ms. Parette and Ilya Kuriakin are especially amusing. Boomie at the Boobies
Oh, and it's your turn to start the next close shave. |

Jul-06-11 | | Travis Bickle: http://youtu.be/nC9Vt1xQ5Kw |
|
Jul-06-11
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Travis> that's extraordinary- not just that the song is epic- but that Paul looks into the camera for much of the performance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nC9V... Normally, this almost always distracts the performer, and reduces the quality of the singing. This is absolutely not the case with Paul.
I think Paul can do this because he lives to perform for an audience. I think he's most alive when looking at his audience while performing a live song. If anything, he sings better on these occasions.
So it's almost eerie how flawlessly he sings "Long and Winding Road" in the studio, looking directly at the camera, and delivers an emotionally convincing performance. There's Paul- and then there's everyone else.
Except for Peter Gabriel, who some think is Paul's equal, or maybe even greater. |
