With a handful of other guitarists, such as Duane Allman, Cooder is considered the finest of slide guitarists.

Here is Woody Guthrie's "Vigilante Man" - "He shoots his brothers and sisters down."

Leadbelly and Guthrie are the two giants at the dawn of folk music. There is no third.

<Bomb Squad>

I hadn't heard "Vigilante Man" certainly a good choice.

By coincidence I was recently watching a documentary on <Bill Graham's> final show at his legendary Filmore East venue.

There was no question but that <Allman Brothers> would be the final act.

Original lineup here as well, if I remember correctly. So you have Dickie Betts and Duane Allman at the same time. And since one lead guitar wasn't enough they put two drum kits on the stage as well.

This was their signature live track for a long time, written by Greg Allman:

You probably already know that before his unexpected monster hit solo record, <Boz Skaggs> and his notoriously temperamental band played a very different kind of music.

One of the funniest sequences of the <Bill Graham> documentary is Bill and Boz having it out over which band gets to go on last at the Filmore East, with Bill playing the trump card THEN YOU DON'T NEED TO PLAY HERE AT ALL.

It all worked out in the end of course.

This is Boz Skaggs with Duane Allman recording some blues at legendary <Muscle Shoals> studio:

Curiously I saw the Bros. at the Washington State Fair in Puyallup. You can't make this up. They were still a great band 25 years after Duane. One of the few bands that compel you to dance on the first note. Sly and the Family Stone were another of those "dance starter" bands.

What is it about Georgia bands that made them so great? The B52s, REM, et al were all worth a long listen to.

Jan-11-21  realdumptrump: Hi <JFQ>,

I'm curious, the other day on the <CG> forum you asserted that you knew why <ThomasTonk> left <CG>.

I'm wondering what your source is?

Thanks.

PS- User: thomastonk shows he left the site back in 2015 (ok, Jan 2016) - so it pre-dates much of what was to come later (ok - an admitted tautology, but you know what I mean).

<Z4me, Z4you>

He posted it right in public. I don't remember the thread, or the exact words, but I can give an approximation that might give enough information to find the thread.

<Thomas> had spent some time, over several days, suggesting that the (obviously fake) games in cg.com be deleted- Santa Claus, Napoleon, Einstein, Oppenheimer were the names that came up.

He got resistance- I'm not sure whether <Daniel> actually posted in the thread or not.

Then <Thomas> suggested a compromise- something like color codes for game pages.

Green for bona fide game from an actual source.

Yellow for highly dubious games (Napoleon, Einstein etc)

Red for obviously false games (Santa, etc).

He got no response.

Then later on he said something like he would not care to keep working here if the administration was not going to do anything about this.

I wish I could remember his exact words, or which thread this was on. The exchanges took place over several days, I believe.

Then he disappeared.

If I remember correctly, this was during the second (sock puppet) incursion by <Olimpiu Urcan> lambasting us for not taking chess history seriously. The obviously fake games came up in the context of this incursion. Thomas's comments on the fake games came sometime around <Urcan's> visit. Either during or shortly afterwards.

I remember that I and <Karpova> posted in support of <Thomas Tonk's> ideas on keeping highly dubious or obviously false games in the database.

I posted something along the lines that <Urcan> was rude, but correct in every criticism he leveled at us. For the second time.

<Thomas> never posted again.

Not long after, <Karpova> left. One reason she gave was that the administration did not take chess history seriously, with specific reference to the World Chess Championship articles she had been writing.

I wish I could supply a link to these conversations because it is doubtful I am getting all of this with any kind of precision. What was actually said can only be seen if we can find the thread (s).

<Thomas> complaining about the fake games for sure he said that.

His "3 color" compromise for sure he said that.

His ultimatum, I don't remember that well enough to stand by it as a one off post- I remember talking to him about that in the thread. More than once, if I remember correctly, but in the same time frame. Over the course of several days.

If you can find any of this public conversation, that would certainly clear some of this up.

<z> I am going through some of <Thomas'> past kibbutzing and I am not able to come up with anything so far.

That was a long time ago and my "memory" of it might well be a conflation of imagination and what I actually read. If so, apologies to you and all members for posting before doing proper research.

The only part that I would say I remember absolutely was this:

<Thomas> suggested deleting the games of dubious provenance- <Napolean, Einstein-Oppenheimer>.

<Thomas> later offered a "three color coding scheme" as a compromise.

But I can't find either of those in the back kibbutzing either, though I just started looking a few minutes ago.

I did notice some interesting old conversation between you and <Thomas>.

I also noticed that he appreciated a premium gift from <Santa Claus>, so maybe he didn't mind Santa being in the database.

I believe "Santa" was either and/or <Daniel>, <OhioChessFan>?

I remember the <Rinus> awards was <hms123> and maybe a few others?

I know for sure that <OCF> dontated a dozen or more premiums every Christmas for years.

It’s a great pity <Thomas The Tonk Engine> left. I remember when he contributed to the BRD versus FRG debate. There were nuances that the rest of us were pretty much ignorant of.

I guess he was a lot more active before I got here, but his chess knowledge and language skills were clearly a great asset.

----------

Well, the New Year has gotten off to a not-so-great start for me. Mother has been inundated with doctor’s and hospital appointments, and her favourite eldest son has been appointed official taxi driver. Most people are cancelling non-urgent medical tests so they can keep well away from these disease-ridden places, but not her. Oh no.

On a more positive note, one of us has now had a Covid jab, so I’m sending her into the fish and chip shop to collect my supper from now on!

-------------

I’ve been trying hard to keep up with the machinations of the footy scene, but there was such a furious flurry of activity, that I’ve mostly forgotten what occurred.

<Can you hear the drums Fernando> was good. <Tophat&Kane> and <Son Ee Jym> were excellent. I can remember that much because my fantasy team felt the benefit.

I also noted that we got trashed by City in the <F>oreigner <A>pathy Cup. Not one of our finest moments. We may still be riding high in the league, but as you will be aware, the difference between 1st and 10th is only a few points, so a couple of dodgy results and before you know it, all the talk is about mid-table mediocrity and/or manager dismissal.

Another thing - the current points tally may suggest that there will be a close finish, but I’m still only seeing the topmost quality when I watch City and Liverpool. Damned annoying!

Everything still to play for though, and interest never wanes when you know that the top teams can all beat each other on their day.

More games tonight, and Spurs have a very winnable fixture against The Cottagers. Never trust those who are openly supportive of ‘cottaging’ … You heard it here first. Come on yooooo Spurs!

lol I might have 3000 Facebook friends but I'd have to get a personality transplant first. Although I refuse to believe this is all my fault. Imagine blocking someone just because they call everyone "brah" in every single post...

What kind of wedding will you have? Have you bought a ring? Do people still do that I wonder. I have only been to two weddings and they were both quite festive and wonderful.

I am sorry to hear of your family health challenges, but glad to know one of your tribe has been inoculated.

Here in B.C. my mother is in "turn 3" order and should get her vaccine in two months. I'll believe that when I see it.

The Canadian government has always been an incompetent shambles and the B.C government is several factorials worse than the Feds.

---

I am behind in Footy because my main streaming site has not uploaded new games for over a week, which is hardly a good sign.

Luckily I found another site that offers streams, so I was able to catch <Spurs vs. HMS Marine Combat Unit>. I was heartened by the cute girls getting drunk in their garden whilst watching the match, and by <Deli Alley> bossing a game again. Despite <Veni Vidi Vici's> goals splurge, <Kirstie Alley> was certainly man of the match.

As she was so often on the "Cheers" TV shoe.

========

PS did you know "Marine" is a Hotel?

lolol

SERIOUS QUESTION: Is this only the second English squad to list their home as a hotel, instead of a city? The first being the <Dog and Ferret Carpenters Union Football Club> out of Fulchester.
