And Happy Nude Deer to you as well, My good <Penguin!> Congratulations again on your performance in <McLovin> and <OhioChessFan's> prediction contest. I had forgotten until this second I used to call <chessmoron> "McLovin" because he recommended the (very funny) movie "Superbad." <chessmoron> is a Judd Apatow fan. |

Jan-17-22 | | TheBirdman33: Hi <Jess> -- just a brief explanation for my re-appearance at CG-- of course I noticed <Tab> and his frustrations, and you pretty much being the only one to really side with him, initiating a vote, and by supporting his invaluable work and demanding some form of <appreciation> from the likes of <Susan> and others in admin jobs, grabbed my attention.... Obviously you, like <Tab>, are not really appreciated for your contributions of that kind, mainly it gets ignored or people talk about off-shoots and derivatives, like who I am/was; of course you and some others realized I was Niels(formerly 'achieve'), but well before that you "alone" almost had the real guts to choose to appreciate and support <Tab>, and demanded that, with quite some courage. I admire you for that, as I did similarly on numerous occasions in the past when you showed similar passion and heart, which is prolly why we had such close contact. There is such a thing as an underlying current that might have two people connect, while on the surface we may differ quite a lot. I really am not that bothered by that, it is what it is, and just felt the need to respond to- and appreciate- <Tab>, following your tries to highlight his frustrating position. Him being a smart and tough cookie I just want to leave it at that, not engage any further, neither here nor there, in what --<there>-- is nothing much short of a hornets' nest, and wish you guys the best. |

Thanks <Niels>! Very encouraging attitude towards <Tabanus> and <Stonehenge>. I am sure your ideas are appreciated. Seems obvious to me that any new hires should be involving <Tabahenge> in any discussion/decisions concerning the actual database. I hope you can stick around for a while eh. |

Jan-19-22 | | TheBirdman33: <Jess> - nice to hear back from you! My new username is a tribute to a new "late-in-life" hero of mine, Larry Joe Bird -- I'll skip on the details, heh So it is perfectly fine to use my real first name at your place, but please use the <Birdman33> on other gamepages or forums if we happen to meet there. Just a heads up for you that I do not engage further on the CG forum or other places for that matter, because the arguments would only cost valuable energy and time; I primarily wanted to support <tab> in public, and you, which I did. As for Chess/returning to <CG> -- it was that kid from Iran, Alireza Firouzja, that fanned my chess flame up again, as he is the only newcomer that interests me since Carlsen. He beat Carlsen in a Banter Blitz final, some 18 or so months ago, and it was Live, over 16 games, and it was clear from some of those games that Alireza was- will be- VERY special. Hope you are doing well, and I may drop by once in a while, otherwise you may catch me at some of the gamepages, or tournament pages. Wijk aan Zee is really warming up now. The Carlsen v Jorden van Foreest game is a stunner btw, even though it ended in a draw. |

Jan-22-22 | | WinKing: Don't forget to turn in your Round 7 picks. |

Jan-24-22 | | TheBirdman33: <Jess>- I have to confess I had a feeling <mckmac> or <Boomie> would pop up here, "for some reason", and <Open Defence> also came up! - hehe Honestly, there are still a lot of good memories from that time. I remember that very first time I connected on <chessgames> with three or four people here, <chessmoron>, <Dom>, a great guy by the name of <Chopin>, and <danielpi> and you, all within a certain number of hours. Quite some <IQ> to "cope" with, I remember, being quite impressed with you guys at the time having only read, in admiration, the handling of the english language, and hesitant to post a message myself, - it was sorta overwhelming and scary, yet at the same time a great challenge -- funny how everything still sticks, especially when those emotions play a role, a little fear, that "first time" feeling. And certainly that intimidation factor. Was just thinking out loud here, for old time sake, I guess. |

<TheBirdman33ofAlcatraz> Sadly, Matt, Tim and Deffi have not posted anywhere on cg.com for many months now. I hope they pop up eventually as well.
Yes we learned about ONN Tru KINGGES together that day we met eh? <DanPi> was accusing someone of being "the worst Kibbutzer ever" and we immediately asked how WE could become the "worst Kibbutzer ever" and so <DanPi> gave us lessons! I believe you were the first friend I made at cg.com and certainly one of the best. |

Jan-30-22 | | WinKing: Hi <jessica>,
***Tomorrow's final 13th round starts two hours earlier than previous rounds. It will start @ 12:00 CET & 06:00 EST. Please be sure to get your picks in on time.*** |

Jan-31-22 | | TheBirdman33: Hi <Jess> - sorry for the delayed reaction, but the thing is, or was, that only 2 days ago I realized that I conflated the opening of my forum with the first time we kibbutzed, and actually was in agony trying to figure out what the "mix-up" was... never mind -- yes, you were exchanging with slippery Pi, he was more than a handful, haha-- and I think that was when I butted in, trying to defend you, or something like that. Yeah, mostly I remember being drawn in by yer (you, dom and Pi) sense of humor and sponteneity, I even recall DanPi calling you a "social butterfly" at some later point. Can't be 100% sure, but from my recollection <chessmoron> was your first, at the time probably "best" friend. Real no-nonsense guy, helpful, and no flowery verbiage from him. And now, 15+ years later, Chess is still what links us all, the game that - once it becomes your passion - stays with you for life. Btw, I remember now while typing, that I, among several others, pressed for you to expand your profile, in order to provide some background and your interests etc., besides chess. I'm just saying ;) |
|
Jan-31-22 | | TheBirdman33: P.S. -- Yes, now I remember clearly <chessmoron> taught us the ropes in here, you first, and me later-- incredibly generous and helpful, he saw everything that happened around here, from what I recall... Guess that is the main ingredient that kept us here, our first online home as it were... That is why I was hurting when I saw some of the stuff that was posted on the CG page. Do you still have the time to do some real study, or online or OTB playing? |

<TheBirdman33: a film by Alfred Hitchcock> Brilliant!
I had forgotten it was <chessmoron> who took us under his wing! Quite right. I prefer to call him <McLovin> because he got me into the film "Superbad" by Judd Apatow. <McLovin> is a character in that movie. Yes all credit to <chessmoron> for his generosity towards us eh? What a valuable service he did for cg.com to welcome new members with such care. Yes I play OTB regularly at chess club, and I have been playing online correspondence tournaments, one after the other, for about 10 years now at <Kingscrusher's> website. Currently my rating there is 2149, but that's not as high as it sounds. On <Kingscrusher's> site I estimate that would be roughly equivalent to a Class B over the board rating. Which is born out by my Canadian Chess Federation OTB rating- 1740 something or other. On "work," you may be pleased, or horrified, to learn that the only training work I do these days is a suggestion you first made to me. I put a random game into my chess engine, and then try to find the win down to the checkmate. As you said many years ago, this can be much harder that one might think- especially if the advantage for the winning side is under 2.0 centipawns eh? Are you playing any chess or doing any chess training these days? |

Feb-01-22 | | TheBirdman33: <Jess> This is quite incredible, but I am doing the exact same thing at the moment, with regards to picking a random game, and then... allow me to illustrate, it is this game: D Nyamdorj vs Nicolas Skettos, 2016 It's the names that had me pick this one, quite a unique pawn-mass here after move 31.h4 - here's the FEN click for larger viewI took over from <Nyamdorj> - who plays in the Vancouver area if you believe it - and I wanted to "collect" that pesky white pawn to get the biggest black central pawn mass in history, I'll skip the drama from here on.... click for larger view This is 6 moves on from the previous FEN -- How to proceed? Engine evals are quite worthless in these cases, since nothing ought to be able to stop this avalanche, and a piece must be sacrificed by White in order to save life short term... click for larger view This is after 46 moves, White (my engine) plays 47. Bg2, I play <f3> After a few more moves, after the B is sacked, and white has captured with the Knight on <D4>, this is what remains click for larger view |
