Sep-16-08  dotsamoht: I do not see a kibitzing dialog box in <lost in space>'s forum, so I don't know how to place the marker. Thus I cannot copy the link to add to the sticky.

kutztown46: It looks like <LIS> closed down his forum! There was stuff there yesterday. Never mind, I guess.
Sep-17-08  Xenon Oxide: A thousand pardons for messing up so badly as a town crier! I'll make sure before I post, I have the correct boiler plate. I must've forgotten to update the master document on my USB.

Ah, nevermind.

Sep-17-08  Xenon Oxide: Yes, I must've made a truly spectacular mistake. I labeled every boiler plate with a date, and I clicked on the wrong one.

Then I copied and pasted without checking out the move numbers.

Lol.

Sep-17-08  jepflast: <kutztown46> Has there been any indication that cg is working on the Analysis Tree? I'm looking into the possibility of doing it myself, but I don't want to waste my time if they're close to finishing.

Also, where is the proper forum to suggest opening novelties for consideration? Is there a list of suggestions so far?

Thanks.

The Analysis Tree idea is still alive but is not imminent. I don't think we will see it for this game. That makes the Variation Index that <Once> is doing more valuable. How would you do it yourself?

We have not designated a forum this game for novelties. That idea kind of fizzled last game so I never brought it up. You are more than welcome to host such a forum yourself, if you want to try to drum up interest.

Sep-17-08  jepflast: <kutztown46> I'd have to put it up on my own web server, of course, and I wouldn't have access to all the user names (for kibitzing), but the rest I can do. Time is of course the main issue.

I would post one universal login and password here, and everyone could just go in and update the tree as they see fit. What would really be cool is to eventually have a program that interfaces an engine with the tree, so that it can automatically generate x-number of candidate moves for any position.

Since you believe it's not imminent from cg, I'm going to go ahead and take a look at this project to see how long it will take, at least.

Sep-17-08  classF: <kutztown46> Is 7.Qd2 a6 8.O-O-O <Be7> benjinathan forum? That line is rather popular in correpondence now. I have about six very recent ICCF games in that line, should I post them there?

Good question. The forum setup after 7. Qd2 is already set, and there will be a forum for 7...a6 8. O-O-O Be7. So I would encourage you to wait until after the move tomorrow.

You could post your material at the <benjinathan> forum now, but you would end up posting it again in another forum less than 16 hours from now.

I admire your willingness to take on such a massive project, but to be consistent, I must issue a caution:

We are all very grateful to cg.com for the opportunity to participate in these challenges. Many of us prefer to limit ourselves to the tools that cg.com has provided us, as a matter of loyalty. Not everyone feels this way but many of us do, and would refrain from utilizing a tool outside the framework provided to us here.

cg.com has and continues to enhance the tools they give us. Sometimes they move more slowly than we would like and do not go as far as we would like. However, they are not stagnant.

This debate came up during the last game with others. I hope you understand my position. Of course, you can proceed with your plan if you wish.

Sep-18-08  jepflast: <kutztown46> Thanks, I will be cautious and keep that in mind. I have to point out that all the engines we use are also tools not provided by chessgames.com, so no one can complain on that basis. Worst case scenario, my work is ignored, which is perfectly okay with me.

If I succeed, perhaps cg can use it as a template to produce a similar feature, or at least we can learn from my mistakes. This is all a big "if" still, of course.

Anyway, thanks for discussing it with me. I'll stop yapping about it now to avoid more distraction from the game at hand.

Please don't! I'm so sorry. Only now do I notice that you were "on the bench" for two consecutive forum changes. That was not my intent. Please forgive me.

This time around, for the sake of continuity, <ajile>, <mckmck>, <classF> and <Karpova> retained their forums. Two new spots opened up and I had to choose among <achieve>, <tweet77>, <dalbertz> and you. I noticed that <tweet77> was on the bench last time so I gave him a forum. Then I noticed that <achieve> is tied for the fewest total days with an active forum so I gave him the last spot and completely overlooked that you were on the bench last time.

Sorry again. I've been a bad boss!

Sep-19-08  Red October: no no, dont worry about it, just a joke to go with the Financial Times... though looking back it was not in good taste.... heh!
Sep-19-08  Boomie: <kutztown46>

Thanks for the great job you are doing for the Team. You just get better at it each time. I wish we all did.

Our system relies on members to post their work in the right forum. Unfortunately many of our most active members use only the main page. My recent gentle reminder on the main page is being ignored as it always has in the past.

I suggest we appoint a number of main page administrators who have delete privileges. Their job will be to copy speculative notation intensive posts to the appropriate forae and delete them from the main page. For the forae system to move into the next phase, we need to take steps to enforce the rules.

Thank you for the kind words.

I understand your frustration with some team members not using the forum system. I think this problem gets worse whenever there is a contested vote. Everyone wants to be <heard> and many are afraid that their opinion will be ignored if they do not post on the main page.

I doubt if cg.com would allow the idea that you proposed and if they did, we would have more than a few irate team members after their post was deleted or moved.

I think we need to keep things voluntary, repeat the gentle reminders periodically, knowing that compliance will never be excellent and sometimes will be poor.
