Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: I lost my yoda avatar again because I was not a premium member for three days. I did check at my expire date but everything still worked as if I was still premium and no advanced warning as usual years :O) Anyone knows it that avatar is taken or can I still submit/request it at chesscames.com?

SwitchingQuylthulg: <lostemperor> I always thought your original avatar is automatically reclaimed if available when you become a premium member again... but either I was wrong or somebody used it only for a couple days since it seems to be available here: Avatar Area

lostemperor: Hi folks! It's a bit late but the master tournament in Bilbao is taking place the 24th.

It is only 6 participants, but a very strong tournament so if there is enough interest for it, I'd like to hold a prediction contest.

Because of the few participants some kind of tie-breaker seems sensible, since there could be many equal scores even if the predicitons are different.

I would like only for this tournament count only the square and pair betting ranker for above reasons.

I hope to get the CONMAN back to business again since I had some problems with my computer. A daily report may not be possible. So place your bets please for:

BILBAO MASTER FINAL

Participants:

1. Carlsen
2. Anand
3. Kramnik
4. Aronian
5. Karjakin
6. Vallejo

Except perhaps for Vallejo, it seems like a big gamble to me :)

Sep-21-12  YouRang: Hi <lostemperor>! Glad to see you running your contest again. However, I think your list of participants isn't quite right:

Kramnik OUT
Caruana IN.

Sep-21-12  YouRang: My final standings prediction (given revised lineup):

1. Carlsen
2. Aronian
3. Caruana
3. Karjakin
5. Anand
6. Vallejo

Sep-22-12  WinKing: Hi <lostempereor>. Your right this is a tough one to figure. The only one I'm *fairly* sure of is slot 6. Wouldn't put money on it though. :)

1. Aronian
2. Carlsen
3. Anand
4. Karjakin
4. Kramnik
6. Vallejo

Sep-22-12  Aurora: Final standings prediction:

1. Carlsen
2. Aronian
3. Karjakin
3. Anand
5. Caruana
6. Vallejo
