Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: Congratulations to <wtwz> and <wordfunph> for winning the Gold!!

It was a photo finish over <Diademas> ♕ and <lostemperor> ♕ in the Absolute Ranker, but in the Square Ranker he won comfortably.

Amazingly <wtwz> was absent for prizes in the Pair Betting Ranker where <wordfunph> won the tough contest above <lostemperor> ♕ and <chessmoron> ♖!

lostemperor: <WannaBe> congratulations for winning the Betting ranker in YouRang chessforum after <Penguincw> and <karpkasp>!

You cannot win them all and better luck next time here again <;)

lostemperor: There will be a strong tournament in a few days in Zurich http://www.zurich-cc.com/ But with 6 participants it won't be so interesting or hard as Tata Steel chess for a prediction contest!
Jan-26-14  Karposian: Thanks for a great contest <lostemperor>. Congrats to the winners!

Penguincw: Ouch! Not a tournament I want to remember. There were 10 different reports through 11 rounds, meaning there could've been as many as 30 different users being last (roughly). I was that user 19 times (63%).

Anyway, thanks for hosting, and congratz to the winners. :)

By the way, is that a yes or no to hosting Zurich. ;)

moronovich: Thanks for hosting ! Great job.
Jan-26-14  Golden Executive: Thanks <lostemperor> for hosting and running.

Congratulations to all the medal winners and welcome <wtwz> and <wordfunph> to the Hall of Fame!

See you guys next time.

Jan-26-14  wordfunph: <GE> thank you.

special thanks to <lostemperor> for hosting and gratz to <wtwz>!

Jan-26-14  WinKing: Thanks for another exciting contest <lostemperor>. I was pretty much a dog in the middle of the pack for this event. Still it's always fun to play here! :)

Congratulations to all of the medal winners! Special kudos to new 'Hall of Famers' <wordfunph> & <wtwz>.

Jan-27-14  WinKing: No medals given in the SQUARE RANKER FINAL?
Jan-27-14  wtwz: Thank you for hosting the contest and for the congratulations! It was very close, and I did not expect myself to do this well. If I'm not mistaken I wouldn't have received the gold medal if Karjakin lost to Dominguez.
Jan-27-14  Golden Executive: <WinKing: No medals given in the SQUARE RANKER FINAL?>

I guess the answer is -No medals- because of this rule:

<"The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.">

Jan-27-14  WinKing: Yeah I guess that's it <Golden Executive>.

lostemperor: Yes that was it <wtwz>. <Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.> I should have mentioned it again!

lostemperor: Yesterday Anish Giri gave a simultaneous display with Sergei Karjakin and Tiviakov! Giri performed best with only one loss and one draw against 40, often strong, opponents. Karjakin had 5 draws http://www.ambru-dd.nl/?q=live I was the only one who managed to get a full point from Giri though my game was not seen live! <;)

lostemperor: The HOF is updated. However I still need to make a complete list of all non gold medal winners and post it here. I am behind in that unfortunatly to say. But nothing is lost! So it could be incomplete still also for our new HOFers!
