Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: My predictions for Linares-Morelia. These are tough ones, I think you agree!

1. Topalov (!)
2. Leko
3. Anand
4. Aronian
5. Svidler
6. Morozevich
6. Radjabov
8. Carlsen (?)

I think Carlsen will do better than in Corus. There I predicted him to be 9th. In Linares 8th! (but maybe even better than this)

Feb-09-07  Elixir of Life: Why is Carlsen so underrated? I think he should do better this time.
Feb-09-07  firebyrd: <Elixir> I don't think the predictors are necessarily thinking that Carlsen will do badly. However his opponents are just so strong that he can play well and still come in last.

These guys are all in the top 12 on the rating list, Magnus is at 24. They have years of experience playing at the very top level, Magnus has a few months - and only two top-notch tournaments under his belt.

Feb-12-07  Dim Weasel: <Elixir of Life, firebyrd> I also think predicting Carlsen last is just realism, but he may do better of course.

I was amazed by Karjakin's result in Corus. He is just a little older than Magnus and they have been sort of 'prodigy rivals' for years already.

Feb-12-07  suenteus po 147: My prediction for the final standings of Linares-Morelia 2007:

1. Anand
2. Leko
3. Topalov
4. Radjabov
5. Aronian
6. Svidler
7. Morozevich
8. Carlsen

Feb-12-07  cromat: 1. Topalov
2-3. Aronian, Radjabov
4-5. Anand, Svidler
6-7. Leko, Morozevich
8. Carlsen
Feb-13-07  TIMER: Here is my current Final Standings Prediction of Linares 2007 ...

1 Topalov 8.5/14
2 Anand 8/14
3-4 Radjabov 7.5/14
3-4 Aronian 7.5/14
5-6 Svidler 6.5/14
5-6 Leko 6.5/14
7 Morozevich 6/14
8 Carlsen 5.5/14

Feb-13-07  ahmadov: My prediction for the Linares 2007 tournament:

1. Radjabov
2. Anand
3. Topalov
4. Aronian
5. Leko
6. Svidler
7. Morozevich
8. Carlsen

Feb-13-07  ahmadov: You do not believe that my prediction will come true?

Just wait until the end of the tournament...

Feb-13-07  bgkuzzy: My predictions:

1. Topalov
2. Aronian
Anand
4. Leko
Radjabov
6. Morozevich
7. Carlsen
Svidler

Feb-13-07  stefan1967: 1. Topalov
2. Leko
3. Radjabov
4. Aronian
5. Anand
6. Svidler
7. Morozevich
8. Carlsen
Feb-14-07  ahmadov: <stefan1967> Leko 2 and Anand 5?????
Feb-14-07  Marvol: My prediction is reasoned bottom-up, placing the weakest low and seeing what we end up with at the top

1 Aronian (in-form, doesn't lose easily, favorite again).

2 Topalov (good but may do another 'Svidler' or two).

3 Leko (in great shape but will draw too many games with black as people know he's in-form).

4 Radjabov (won't score easy points against weaker players or using the KID here).

5/6 Anand, Svidler (Anand out of form, Svidler in ailing health).

7 Morozevich (unpredictable and may lose to Carlsen lowering his score).

8 Carlsen (clearly weakest though may beat Moro).

(and what's the bloody trick to get proper line breaks :-( !!??)

Feb-16-07  Elixir of Life: ATTENTION PREDICTORS:

RADJABOV HAS WITHDRAWN FROM LINARES-MORELIA, AND HIS PLACE WAS TAKEN BY IVANCHIK. See the link: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...

Feb-16-07  Elixir of Life: So, my new, revamped predictions:

1. Topalov
2. Aronian
3. Leko
4. Carlsen
5. Anand
6. Svidler
7. Ivanchuk
8. Morozevich

Feb-16-07  firebyrd: 1. Viswanatan Anand
2. Veselin Topalov
3. Levon Aronian
4. Alexander Morozevich
5. Peter Leko
6. Vassily Ivanchuk
7. Peter Svidler
8. Magnus Carlsen

I predicted a backlash for Radja after his phenomenal Corus, and 6th is also about where I expect Ivanchuk to end up in this high-powered company.
