Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

FINAL STANDINGS PREDICTIONS

Kibitzer's Corner
< Earlier Kibitzing  · PAGE 31 OF 285 ·  Later Kibitzing>
Feb-16-07  percyblakeney: New predictions:

1. Topalov
2. Leko
3. Anand
4. Aronian
5. Svidler
6. Morozevich
7. Ivanchuk
8. Carlsen

Feb-16-07  cromat: new pred (with Ivanchuk):
1. Topalov
2. Aronian
3-4. Anand, Svidler
5-6. Leko, Ivanchuk
7. Morozevich
8. Carlsen
Feb-16-07  Marvol: New predictions with Ivanchuk replacing Radjabov:

Marvol: My prediction is reasoned bottom-up, placing the weakest low and seeing what we end up with at the top

1 Aronian (in-form, doesn't lose easily, favorite again).

2 Topalov (good but may do another 'Svidler' or two).

3 Leko (in great shape but will draw too many games with black as people know he's in-form).

4/5 Anand, Svidler (Anand out of form; Svidler in ailing health).

6/7 Ivanchuk, Morozevich (Ivanchuk hasn't prepared all that well, obviously; Moro unpredictable and may lose to Carlsen lowering his score).

8 Carlsen (clearly weakest though may beat Moro).

Feb-16-07  suenteus po 147: My <new> prediction for the final standings of Linares-Morelia 2007:

1-2 Anand, Leko
3-4 Topalov, Aronian
5. Svidler
6. Ivanchuk
7-8 Morozevich, Carlsen

Feb-16-07  ahmadov: My <new> predictions for the Linares 2007 tournament:

4. Ivanchuk
5. Leko

7. Morozevich
8. Carlsen

Feb-16-07  YouRang: <Revised> predictions, following Radjabov being replaced by Ivanchuk:

Feb-16-07  hitman84: New Predictions

1. Aronian
1. Topalov
3. Morozevich
3. Leko
5. Anand
6. Svidler
7. Ivanchuk
8. Carlsen

Feb-16-07  TIMER: Here is my current Final Standings Prediction of Linares 2007 ...

1 Topalov 8.5/14
2-3 Anand 8/14
2-3 Ivanchuk 8/14
4 Aronian 7/14
5-6 Svidler 6.5/14
5-6 Leko 6.5/14
7 Morozevich 6/14
8 Carlsen 5.5/14

I would prefer Ivanchuk to win, he is an equal to Anand and Topalov in ability in my opinion if he can control his nerves and fulfill himself. But he also has not had much preparation time. My ranking is what I feel he deserves- a top three placing- to secure future invites.

Feb-16-07  Legend: My prediction:

1-2 Topalov
1-2 Aronian
3-5 Leko
3-5 Anand
3-5 Ivanchuk
6. Morozevich
7. Svidler
8. Carlsen

Feb-16-07  NakoSonorense: 1.Topalov
2.Anand
3.Svidler
4.Aronian
5.Morozevich

7. Morozevich
8. Carlsen
Feb-17-07  Elixir of Life: <to all>

You have to bear in mind, that even though Ivanchuck is unprepared against his opponents, his opponents are also unprepared for him.

lostemperor: ATTENTION: for those who did not know, Radjabov is replaced by Ivanchuk! To cut some slack for people who have not heard this, predictions (with Ivanchuk included) is allowed today.

(In case you read this too late still, I'm willing to replace Radjabov for Ivanchuk if you already have a prediction if you let me know untill round 3).

Feb-17-07  amadeus: My predictions:

1. Ivanchuk
2. Topalov
3. Anand
4. Leko
5. Morozevich
6. Aronian
7. Svidler
8. Carlsen

Feb-17-07  kolobok: Prediction on tourney as follow: 1)Anand.2)Aronian.3)Topalov.4)Ivanchuk.5)Leko.6)Svidle- - r.7)Carlsen 8)Morozevich.
Feb-18-07  Elixir of Life: Hmmm... Carlsen is off to a head start. As I recall, I was the only one here to put Carlsen anywhere above 7th place (I put him on 4th). Anyways, I have a feeling that I'll win this prediction contest. (Yes, my ego is overgrown). I think that my high placing of Carlsen may pay off.

lostemperor: I forgot for a moment that the tournament started 22.30 Linares time and not 15.30:)

1-0 for you <Elixer of Life>! I knew Carlsen - Morozevich was likely going to be a decisive game and at first I wanted to predict 1-0 but than I thought Morozevich has probably more chance to win it. Tough luck. Although at the chessBookie game I put equal money on both (and nothing on the draw). It wouldn't help my net worth much though I won 130 bucks from my $20 (:
