 | | lostemperor: On the CHESS QUESTION. We now reach a multiple choice format.
Kasparov worked intensively with computers in 1996. Those computers calculated at around 16 ply deep. <How many ply "X" deep did Kasparov say he calculates when comparing himself with a computer?> Did Kasparov say, in those complex positions, he thinks less deep as a computer (trusting his intuition more), as deep as or deeper? a) X < 16
b) X = 16
c) X > 16
You think you know? |
|
Jan-26-09
 | | lostemperor: The open question of this is over and here the multiple choice catagory also open for people who participated before if there is any who would go for this <;) |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: Supposing we won't get another Corus standings update before sufficiently many guesses are in, I'll say X<16. |

Jan-29-09
 | | lostemperor: Here the question which has kept chess players wondering for ages <How many ply does a top chess player (Garry Kasparov) think?> The answer is 16!
Kasparov worked intensively with the computers in 1996. After a win against Shirov he claimed that he can now think like a processor calculating 16 ply deep. He was enthusiastic about it! |
|
Jan-29-09
 | | lostemperor: Winner is <YouRang> with a close 18 ply! <OhioChessFan> 14 ply can be called joint winner. He was a bit too late since the open question already turned in a multiple choice but I will count it to be ex equo to <YouRang>. |
|
Jan-29-09
 | | lostemperor: Thanks for your all comments, links and answers where we now have a broader answer this chess mystery. In a way everyone is right. I read from your links of <Ragh> and <zatara> that Kasparov did say that he usually thinks 3-5 moves (6-10 ply deep) and also that he can think 20 till 28 ply deep on some occasion. We knew GM can do this. What I wanted to know is what Kasparov usually think on average in critical/complex position by his own admission! So no records or some more easy positions :) |
|
| Jan-29-09 | | Everyone: I know! |
|
Jan-30-09
 | | lostemperor: Of course! |
|
Jan-30-09
 | | lostemperor: Kasparov made his claim on how deep he thinks during a Dutch tournament in 1996. It is in the tournament book which I lost at this moment. He claimed to be thinking like a processor that calculte 16 ply deep. As do the computers do then and was thrilled about it. Correct answer: none
Closest answer: <YouRang>, <OhioChessFan> Now all top player train with computers, which can calculate even deeper, so I think most top players now think at that level Kasparov did then. Everyone knows:) |
