Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: <Ragh> you will stay there for at least one more day:)
Feb-21-09  Ragh: <lostemperor> Just wondering why my silver and bronze medals from Corus09 not included in the Hall of Fame. May be you update it at the end of the season?!
Feb-21-09  just a kid: Oh my gosh!I'm in the lead!

  lostemperor: Ur good kid!

Good question <Ragh>. To be in the hall of fame you have to win at least one first prize! Other medals, you've won, will be included. I will make an update of non-gold medal winners sometime after this tournament. Maybe you can win Gold now in Linares by going up the ranker from now on! :)

Feb-22-09  Ragh: <lostemperor> But, I've already won a Gold medal some time Before Christ (BC) ?!?! My name's up there already in HOF.

lostemperor: I run the average predition again on the software. <EvigOptimist> who wasn't read by the software at first because of a wrong input has shared second largest deviation from the average predictions with 14 deviation points. Strange thing is that most people has an average 6-10 points difference with the average predicions. The closest was UNIBET with a 2 point difference. I was pretty close to the average predictions myself:)

Here again the average predictions (I rounded it a little because of some flawed input and maybe a third place for Carlsen would be more accurate but he was close to 2nd place Aronian) :

1. 1.6,Anand,
2. 2.5,Aronian
2. 2.7,Carlsen
4. 3.5,Radjabov
5. 5.0,Ivanchuk
6. 6.0,Grischuk
6. 6.0,Dominguez
8. 6.9,Wang Yue

Feb-23-09  YouRang: <lostemperor> Cool! I don't stink (for the time being anyway).

BTW, have you had any luck getting the new CONMAN software running at your site?

Feb-24-09
Premium Chessgames Member
lostemperor: <YouRang> well I'm also on (silver) medal spots in two of your rankers, Standard and 1-2-3, so I'm just returning the favor hehehe.

I've opened the new software but encountered a problem. I mail you!

Feb-24-09  YouRang: <lostemperor><I mail you!>

I replied via email. :-)

Feb-24-09  YouRang: BTW, that "Average Prediction" report will also be affected (in the new CONMAN software) due to the revised algorithm, where we average tied ranks (2 & 2 = 2.5).

OhioChessFan: I'm enough of a geek to think the average tied ranks is a far better algorithm and actually care that you made the improvement.
