Behold the fiery disk of Ra!

Started with tournaments right after the first Fischer-Spassky set-to, but have long since given up active play in favour of poker.

In my chess playing days, one of the most memorable moments was playing fourth board on the team that won the National High School championship at Cleveland, 1977. Another which stands out was having the pleasure of playing a series of rapid games with Mikhail Tal on his first visit to the USA in 1988. Even after facing a number of titled players, including Teimour Radjabov when he first became a GM (he still gave me a beating), these are things which I'll not forget.

Fischer at his zenith was the greatest of all champions for me, but has never been one of my favourite players. In that number may be included Emanuel Lasker, Bronstein, Korchnoi, Larsen, Speelman, Romanishin, Nakamura and Carlsen, all of whom have displayed outstanding fighting qualities.

Besides sitting across the board from Tal, I have a Lasker number of three and twos for world champions from Capablanca through Carlsen.

Oct-30-13  Jim Bartle: I just saw "Rounders" for the second time. I think it's an excellent movie, but I know zippo about poker. What do you think of it?
Nov-02-13  hedgeh0g: <perfidious> I was wondering what sort of approach you'd recommend for a complete beginner interested in becoming better acquainted with poker. Books? Websites? Videos? Low stakes games?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :)

Nov-02-13  Colonel Mortimer: 1) play money (pokerstars)
2) 2 plus 2 beginner forums
3) Microstakes (pokerstars) full ring

Here's a good article to get you started..

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/7...

Also you can't go wrong reading all the strategy articles here..

http://www.thepokerbank.com/

Most people use pokersoftware to analyse their play and keep a track of other player stats - can recommend pokertacker 4

Nov-02-13  Colonel Mortimer: You'll learn far more and much more quickly playing poker on the internet than playing 'live'.
Nov-03-13  hedgeh0g: Alright, cheers!
Nov-03-13  Jim Bartle: Perfidious has kindly offered to teach you by playing a marathon high-stakes game with you.
Nov-11-13  visayanbraindoctor: <perfidious: Hope things are as well as they can be, given the unfortunate happenings in your country.>

Thank you.

Nov-13-13  MarkFinan: <perfidious: <TheFocus>: Ship this whole business over to mine if you like.>

Okay, I have the time now. If he lives in Hawaii and he always logs in here first thing he should be here pretty soon.

Nov-29-13  Thorncastle: The value of White's 23rd move seems rather clear: intends (next move) to chase the Bishop from c6 to be able to check with the Knight on d5 and get more material engaged in attack (actually only d7 is a possible escape for the Black's Bishop but in this way blocking a further retreat for his King, which was as it seems White's hope).

perfidious: <shach: Man, you really are a senile 60+ year old child.....>

Pity you can't count.

<....What are these silly ignore "threats"? I see you make these threats here every day and the next day you again reply to that person, LOL!>

Guess what? It is very simple to have a poster ignored, yet look up every word they have posted.

<....Yes, you did fail as a chess player and then as a poker player, losing thousands of dollars (who can forget foxwoods casino last year?)....>

So, now you have moved from simple ad hominem attacks without basis in fact to outright libellous statements-I was never at Foxwoods last year, you ignoramus.

<But no need to be so bitter. Just enjoy this great site!>

Sounds as though you are the bitter one, and this site is the more enjoyable without having to view your abusive bile at every turn.

Dec-04-13  sevenseaman: Thanks <perfidious>. Your concern is touching, indeed.

"Reportedly" might be a touch better than "allegedly", which carries a bit of a negative connotation.

Domdaniel: <perf> Good to see you mention Romanishin in your profile. People tend to overlook him today, but he remains one of my favourite players. I've always liked his 3...Be7 line in the French, though I've rarely played it.

Jan-31-14  MarkFinan: Spassky vs Larry Evans, 1962

I saw you post a link to this game somewhere earlier and I just went through it. Very good game I must say. Spassky isn't really my cup of tea but I do like that.

Feb-21-14  Benzol: <Alan> The next time I see Tony, which should be soon I'll ask if he ever spent time in the States. He does have a games file here. Anthony James Booth
Feb-21-14  Benzol: The man you met might be A J Booth
Feb-24-14  waustad: <perfidious: <waustad> What do you think of Indians' chances this upcoming season?>

I'm worried about starting pitching most of all. For them to match last year's win total so much has to go right. The "clutch hitting" stats and babip probably aren't sustainable so they'll need more from Cabrera, Swisher and Bourne at least. If Axford and Pestano both return to the performance from a couple of years ago that will be a big help in a rebuilt bullpen. Masterson has to pitch like an ace and everybody needs to stay healthy among starters. Can Bauer get his head screwed on straight? Calloway got Ubaldo straightened out so anything is possible. There are too many ifs to predict a playoff run, but it would be nice.

Mar-01-14  Benzol: <Alan> Had a talk to Tony Booth and he said he was only in the US in 1964 so it must have been someone else you had contact with.

GM Short kicked my backside earlier today. I'll post the game later either in my forum or on my player page.

Cheers matey.

:)
