I came over here because my question is off-topic for the "Avian Pele" game page.

I saw a few months back that an 8 year old, or maybe younger, had been given a FIDE master title?

I don't understand this practice, since the ratings are calculated by relative performance against other players, right?

So this player's record featured only games from other children in his age group.

This seems a little silly to me. By that, I mean that a decent older player with no FIDE master rating should be able to wipe the floor with this kid and all of the people he played with? I played through some of his games and there were hung pieces and such. I wish I could remember his name. I do recall that <Phony Benoni> viewed this "title" askance as well.

I'm not sure that it's appropriate to be handing out titles before the children have been tested against actually strong players.

For example, referencing the recent discussion on 'Lein', what are the rules and exceptions? For example, I've always pronounced Rubenstein as "Reuben Stine" but perhaps "steen" is correct?

But then there's Bernstein, which I've always pronounced "Burn-steen" but is it "stine" or "stain"?

And then there are examples where the "ei" shows up twice in a name, for example 'Weinstein', which I've always pronounced "Wine-steen" since obviously "Wayne-stain" is wrong, and "Wine-stine" just doesn't sound right.

And yes there are a lot of bad cops.. A few years ago this happened to me..

My door came flying off the hinges at 3am, they completely obliterated it. They didn't knock and it was for the most minor offence I've ever been found not guilty of. When they got me to the charge desk to book me in (btw they also put the cuffs on so tight they cut into my wrists and the desk Sargent ended up taking photos!) and they started with a story that went like this..... "Evening Sarge. We attended a property at ************ over a ********** matter. We knocked on the door 3 times (no they didn't) and could see the lights of a television flickering through the window (no they couldn't). Mr Finan was unresponsive so we shouted him through his letterbox 3 times warning him that if he didn't open the door we'd kick it in (This is the good bit!).. He continued to ignore us, well smashed the door in and he was arrested in his bedroom etc etc etc". Just basic standard procedure for anyone being arrested. I asked the desk Sargent if the custody "suite!" was being recorded and he said yes. I asked the arresting officer to repeat the above events carefully, and I asked him twice. I said "Do you swear on the oath you guys take that that really happened like you just said?" He said yes.

I didn't have a letterbox!! My mail went to a communal letterbox round the back of the apartments!

Glad you mentioned the info above on your state titles, for all I was certain of was outright wins in '88 and '11 and wanted to update your bio.

As far as my own go, 1997 was another year in which I lost out on tiebreak--don't remember whether Matt Noble or Steven Winer finished first, but both were still residents in the state, as Matt moved south a few months afterwards.

Paul Steiner beat me in the final round of the 1987 event to win that.
