Behold the fiery disk of Ra!

Started with tournaments right after the first Fischer-Spassky set-to, but have long since given up active play in favour of poker.

In my chess playing days, one of the most memorable moments was playing fourth board on the team that won the National High School championship at Cleveland, 1977. Another which stands out was having the pleasure of playing a series of rapid games with Mikhail Tal on his first visit to the USA in 1988. Even after facing a number of titled players, including Teimour Radjabov when he first became a GM (he still gave me a beating), these are things which I'll not forget.

Fischer at his zenith was the greatest of all champions for me, but has never been one of my favourite players. In that number may be included Emanuel Lasker, Bronstein, Korchnoi, Larsen, Speelman, Romanishin, Nakamura and Carlsen, all of whom have displayed outstanding fighting qualities.

Besides sitting across the board from Tal, I have a Lasker number of three and twos for world champions from Capablanca through Carlsen.

Domdaniel: <perf> ... notes toward a history of perfidiousness ... an article by John Bradley on the Irish Chess Union (ICU) website, describes an Irish chess club in the 1700s. (Bradley is an archaeologist - we played on the same college team, UCD, years ago). Among other details, he quotes "CuimhnĂgĂ ar Luimneach agus ar fheall na Sasanach" -- a line (in the Irish language) supposedly used as a slogan by Irish troops at the battle of Fontenoy -- meaning "Remember Limerick and the Perfidy of the Saxons".

Bradley's article: http://www.icu.ie/articles/display....

Perfidy forever, eh?

<perfidious>

I came over here because my question is off-topic for the "Avian Pele" game page.

I saw a few months back that an 8 year old, or maybe younger, had been given a FIDE master title?

I don't understand this practice, since the ratings are calculated by relative performance against other players, right?

So this player's record featured only games from other children in his age group.

This seems a little silly to me. By that, I mean that a decent older player with no FIDE master rating should be able to wipe the floor with this kid and all of the people he played with? I played through some of his games and there were hung pieces and such. I wish I could remember his name. I do recall that <Phony Benoni> viewed this "title" askance as well.

I'm not sure that it's appropriate to be handing out titles before the children have been tested against actually strong players.

<Bobby> got his USCF and FIDE titles as a child, but he didn't get them by playing other children.

Aug-12-14  Rookiepawn: Hi there! <perfidious> Thanks for your background info about some kibitzers's postings; sometimes I engage in answering just for fun, knowing there is no hope anyway.

So you play poker? I tried a couple of times, but that's not for me. You need too much mental discipline for that, more than for chess imho. Dealing with randomness, psychology, probability... big mess.

Aug-12-14  Rookiepawn: <I saw a few months back that an 8 year old, or maybe younger, had been given a FIDE master title?>

I don't get this: isn't there an objective, measurable way of selecting a player for title awarding? Or is it just aliens telling Mr Ilyumzhinov what to do?

Fusilli: <Rookiepawn> <Or is it just aliens telling Mr Ilyumzhinov what to do?>

No no, that's not how it works. It's Ilyumzhinov who tells aliens what *they* should do. It's been that way ever since they abducted him in 1997 (see Wikipedia entry on him), a move they forever regretted, of course.

Aug-12-14  Rookiepawn: <Fusilli> lol, I knew about the story, that's why I posed the question.

I think the aliens demanded a ransom threatening to do something horrible. As the ransom was not paid they carried out the threat, releasing him.

Sep-02-14  waustad: Tonight has been really up and down watching the Indians vs Tigers. Hunter - Cabrera - Martinez - Martinez is brutal. The Indians usually win close, but have nowhere near that kind of firepower. While writing this the JD Martinez just hit a 3 run homer. Explitive deleted.
Sep-14-14  morfishine: <perfidious> I enjoy Etymology http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etymol... but am easily confused when it comes to the correct pronounciation

For example, referencing the recent discussion on 'Lein', what are the rules and exceptions? For example, I've always pronounced Rubenstein as "Reuben Stine" but perhaps "steen" is correct?

But then there's Bernstein, which I've always pronounced "Burn-steen" but is it "stine" or "stain"?

And then there are examples where the "ei" shows up twice in a name, for example 'Weinstein', which I've always pronounced "Wine-steen" since obviously "Wayne-stain" is wrong, and "Wine-stine" just doesn't sound right.

Thanks for the education

Sep-29-14  MarkFinan: <perfidious: <Mark> In my life, I have known too many cops, mostly bad: one happy exception was Tony Renna, with whom I stayed once while playing in a NY Open.>

I just checked his rating out Perf and he's pretty strong! You ever manage to beat him?

And yes there are a lot of bad cops.. A few years ago this happened to me..

My door came flying off the hinges at 3am, they completely obliterated it. They didn't knock and it was for the most minor offence I've ever been found not guilty of. When they got me to the charge desk to book me in (btw they also put the cuffs on so tight they cut into my wrists and the desk Sargent ended up taking photos!) and they started with a story that went like this..... "Evening Sarge. We attended a property at ************ over a ********** matter. We knocked on the door 3 times (no they didn't) and could see the lights of a television flickering through the window (no they couldn't). Mr Finan was unresponsive so we shouted him through his letterbox 3 times warning him that if he didn't open the door we'd kick it in (This is the good bit!).. He continued to ignore us, well smashed the door in and he was arrested in his bedroom etc etc etc". Just basic standard procedure for anyone being arrested. I asked the desk Sargent if the custody "suite!" was being recorded and he said yes. I asked the arresting officer to repeat the above events carefully, and I asked him twice. I said "Do you swear on the oath you guys take that that really happened like you just said?" He said yes.

I didn't have a letterbox!! My mail went to a communal letterbox round the back of the apartments!

They paid for the door within a week, I got found not guilty, yet *nothing* was done about the officers involved! And that's the good guys.. I see them as a necessary evil. They've done 10 times worse to me when I was in my early to mid twenties, although I probably deserved it, lol. Hate the lot of them. ✌

Nov-14-14  carterd253: I need help tracing Vermont State Champions. Can you help? I have them all from 1993 on, but 1972 - 1992 is sketchy. I have you winning outright in 1979, 1982, 1990, 1996, and 1997 and tied for 1st in 1981, 1986, 1995, and 1998. I won outright in 1984, 1988, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2014 and tied in 1976 and 1978. Didn't Paul Steiner win in there?

perfidious: Dave, welcome to this page! As you can see, I seldom post here but this is a good time to change that.

Glad you mentioned the info above on your state titles, for all I was certain of was outright wins in '88 and '11 and wanted to update your bio.

As far as my own go, 1997 was another year in which I lost out on tiebreak--don't remember whether Matt Noble or Steven Winer finished first, but both were still residents in the state, as Matt moved south a few months afterwards.

Paul Steiner beat me in the final round of the 1987 event to win that.

Lot of memories from all those years at the Athena Club!

Nov-14-14  carterd253: Good info Alan, thanks. In both 1996 and 1997, Matt and Steven are listed as "SC" and "MA." I'm missing 1973-1975, 1977, 1980, 1983, 1985, and 1989. Who is Louis Pouliot?
