Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: The last team, to lose back-to-back World Series? Have to go back to the 91-92 Atl Braves. They lost to the Twins, and the Blue Jays.

keypusher: Well, now that nice Mr. LaRussa doesn't have to feel bad about using the wrong pitcher in Game 5.
Oct-29-11  Jim Bartle: "Report: Ilan Grapel told Mets won Series"

Not so strange. People are taking advantage of the fact I'm out of the countr, still trying to convince me the Giants won the Series last year.

I notice in that 1967 All-Star Game that Yastrzemski batted sixth for the AL. Interesting that Oliva, Killebrew and Conigliaro were considered better hitters at the All-Star break. But I remember that Yaz went crazy in September.

Oct-29-11  Jim Bartle: I looked at Yastrzemski's 1967 season, and noticed he played 35 games in the month of August. Wonder when the last time a player played that many in a month was.

Sox played SEVEN doubleheaders that month, went 9-5, Lonborg getting three of the wins.

Oct-29-11  technical draw: World series hero David Freese earned $500,000 this year. Albert Pujols made $15,000,000. TD made, uh, well let's just say that life ain't fair.

Oct-29-11  technical draw: I know <Phony>. Payoff odds on the Cardinals winning the world series (pre-season odds) were 999 to 1....(what is it that they say about hindsight?)
Oct-30-11  Jim Bartle: USC 48 Stanford 48 in overtime.

WannaBe: Trees won, after 'SC fumbled.
Oct-30-11  Jim Bartle: Very fortunate, stupid penalties by USC, receiver ran out the clock rather than fall down for FG attempt. Fortuitous, providential.

Hard to write without using the word "luck" and still make the point.

WannaBe: There have been a (quite?) few columnists that posted how 'great' game 6 of the WS was. Even Jerry Greene http://espn.go.com/espn/page2/story... wrote: <If you didn't love Game 6 of the World Series, then you are either dead or a Yankee.>

Okay, it was drama, it was a roller-coaster ride, but purists point of view, the game wasn't well played!

Kinda like the movie 'Titanic', drama, roller-coaster emotional ride, people died at the end, boat sunk. Fini. But was it a 'good' or 'great' movie?! No.

I'll take 'Blazing Saddles' or 'Slapshot' anyday.

Oct-30-11  Jim Bartle: It was a comedy of errors through most of the game, but turned really dramatic in the final 3 or 4 innings.

People said the same about the 1989 Super Bowl, which the 49ers won 20-16 with Montana's last minute drive, with passes to Rice and Taylor. But it was a pretty dull game for the first three quarters, lots of missed opportunities and not-great play.

WannaBe: Geeeeeeze..... All the morning games sucks. Not one of them have my interest. (That's pretty hard to do.)

Okay, upon further review, maybe, <MAYBE> Ari-Bal or NO-St.L games, just to see if Bal. or NO can score 80 points while kicking the snot out of Ari./St.L

Late game worthy of interest, NE-Pit, and Det-Den, just to see if Suh can level Tebow and then do a Haka. Perhaps Suh can level Ed Hochuli and then do a Haka? Or is Ed even refereeing this game?

Night game have Dal-Phi, could be interesting, see if the cold can cause Romo to throw/fumble more ball than humanly possible. =)

p.s. I posted the link to the answers on L. Stumpers page on them post-season walk-offs.

WannaBe: According to what I have here, Baltimore, favoured by 13 1/2, New Orleans, favoured by 12 1/2.

How/Who would have thunk, that those two teams can't cover 2 TDs?!?! (Good thing I don't gamble!)

Afternoon games...

Detroit (-3) at Denver, take Detroit, Suh is going to knock Tebow so hard, Tebow will wake up in Boulder.

Washington at Buffalo (-5), take the Buffs, 'Skins are in total disarray.

New England (-2 1/2) at Pittsburgh, H. Wards is out for Pitts, plus the weather, so take the under (52 ?!).

Cincinnati (-2 1/2) at Seattle, expect another ugly game like that Sea-Clev last week? Take the Bungles, AFC West is pretty much 49ers to lose.

Cleveland at San Francisco (-9), weather is beautiful outside, take the over (38 1/2).

Remember, any money you win, I get half!

Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> And you also cover half of any losses?

With Baltimore, I would hesitate to give that many points against anyone. They can't be trusted to score enough to cover.

Oct-30-11  hangingenprise: <wannabe> you would be better off buying #81 jersey from detroit.

WannaBe: The only one that is very iffy is the over on the 49ers game, hoping for 17-17 overtime, and a TD.

Thank goodness I am not a gambling man, otherwise I'd be wearing out my carpets.
