Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: Good win by Detroit at Cleveland. Personally, I really thought StL. would end Dodgers' road trip win record, for some reason, I am still so deathly afraid of them redbirds.
Aug-06-13  Jim Bartle: Looks to me as if the stars are aligned in Detroit's favor this year. It just feels like their time.

But the three-tiered playoffs make it tougher for the best team to win.

Phony Benoni: We'll see if the Tigers' luck runs out as the Peralta suspension drags on. Funny thing, he admitted to doping in 2012, which was by far the worst year he has had as a Tiger.

What really bugs me about Peralta is that, clear up to the moment the suspension was announced, he insisted he hadn't used PEDs. C'mon guys--when they catch you admit it and take your lumps. Don't keep lying to us.

Perhaps baseball players aren't so different from the rest of us after all.

An unintended consequence is the situation with Miguel Cabrera, who has been hobbled for a couple of weeks now with various twists and turns. He really needs to go on the DL and get this all straightened out, but with Peralta gone he'll probably try to tough it out.

perfidious: <Phony Benoni>: In time, you will not miss Peralta at all-Iglesias brings what that infield needs, a Gold-Glove calibre fielder who can make every play at short, and then some. Only question as he made it through the Red Sox' system was whether he would hit at the major league level. In the Tigers' lineup, he can hit eighth or ninth and play every day.

Phony Benoni: <perfidious> No doubt it will turn out to be a good deal in the long run. Even had Peralta not been suspended, he would likely have walked as a free agent following the season; the Tigers would have balked at paying bit bucks to a shortstop in his mid-30s. THey gave up a top prospect in Avisail Garcia, but if there is one thing the Tigers' farm system has it's good young outfielders.

Style-wise, if not quality-wise, it seems to be like switching Omar Vizquel for Cal Ripken Jr.

I worry about the Tigers' offense; too much Boom or Bust. They've just won two games from Cleveland 4-2 and 5-1, in both games scoring all their runs in one inning. Hey, I'm a baseball fan. I have to worry about something!

WannaBe: Things that make you go 'huh?':

Today, Oakland @ Cincinnati played an afternoon game, then both team have tomorrow off.

Oakland then goes to Toronto for Fri-Sun series, while Cincinnati goes to San Diego for a Fri-Sun series.

Why the early start? Both team can play in the evening.

Phony Benoni: The old hidden ball trick. Almost as rare as the unassisted perfect game:

http://losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com/n...

You've got to admire the announcers for shifting from blaming the umpires to praising them without ever confessing they had no idea what was going on.

Aug-10-13  Jim Bartle: Yes, it took forever for the announcers to figure out what happened.

The runner really should ask for time once he's on the base and the play is over.

Is that considered a double play?

I saw Cabrera trip over third base, and his teammates gave him a real razzing. Fortunately Detroit was well ahead at the time.

Phony Benoni: You probably saw Cabrera hit his game-tying home run off Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning Friday after fouling two pitches off an already sore leg. Astounding. But this box score is even more astounding. It represents the last time before Friday that Rivera blew a save against the Tigers.

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

Note the date.

Aug-11-13  Jim Bartle: Yes! spectacular home run off Rivera. Hit another one today, I think.
Aug-12-13  Jim Bartle: Mlb.com really screwed up last night. They showed the clip of Cabrera homering off Rivera for the second straight night.

Eggman: Hey, PB. Just recently Julio Ernesto Granda Zuniga has eliminated Peter Leko to advance to the third round of the World Cup. I notice that on his biography page there is no mention of his near qualification for the Candidates through the 1987 Zagreb Interzonal, where he was eliminated only after a play-off with Predrag Nikolic and Jesus Nogueiras. You can confirm this here: http://www.mark-weeks.com/chess/889....
