Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Jan-05-14  Jim Bartle: Seattle and SF should win next week. Then Seahawks will beat the Niners easily.

Jan-05-14  Jim Bartle: That knuckleball is really jumping around. Moves about three times.

I've practiced at the net with tennis balls with the fuzz worn off. Most balls hit at me had no spin, and they jumped around like crazy. I got hit a lot, missing the ball completely.

He knows how to juke his way past responsibility better than he does turnovers, it would seem:

Phony Benoni: Any team needing a quarterback should be grateful if the Raiders take Manziell. I realize I'm horrible at predictions, but there definitely appear to be Ryan Leaf vibes there.

perfidious: <PB>: Though hadn't occurred to me, really, but one can conjecture as to the fate of the moribund Colts franchise had they selected Leaf, rather than Manning.

As a Raiders fan, don't know that I care for Manziel going there, though in Al Davis' eyes, he would have been a great fit.

Jan-06-14  Jim Bartle: I don't think the Colts ever considered taking Leaf over Manning.

An interesting case from 1966, I think. The Dolphins needed a quarterback and were under popular pressure to take U of Florida's Steve Spurrier, the Heisman Trophy winner, with the 4th pick. But they'd decided they preferred Bob Griese of Purdue.

Then the 49ers took Spurrier with the fourth pick. Not a Leaf-size blunder, but still very poor judgment.

keypusher: I think Manziel is going to be a great pro quarterback.

Supposedly the "tell" on Leaf was his low completion percentage in college. Quarterbacks who don't complete a lot of their throws in college hardly ever succeed in the pros.

That is definitely not a problem with Manziel.

Given how well guys like Brees and Russell Wilson have done, and how hard the NFL tries to protect quarterbacks, I think Mr. Football could do very well indeed.

keypusher: According to Griese's (pro) HOF bio, the 49ers traded to get the #3 slot in the draft and nab Spurrier. Either team would have picked Spurrier given the chance.

<The Miami Dolphins were looking for a quarterback heading into the 1967 draft. With the fourth overall pick, they had their eyes focused on Spurrier. A draft day trade, however, moved the QB-hungry San Francisco 49ers into the number three overall spot. The 49ers nabbed Spurrier and the Dolphins settled on Griese.

Can't really blame them. I think there were genuine questions about Leaf, but I'm not sure there were any about Spurrier.

Jan-06-14  hangingenprise: remember d'ohmarcus russel. spurrier was a decent qb. griese had a surrounding cast to help him. if manziel is that great than why are the texans, rams?, jags, browns, passing on him, i know mock draft is speculation.
Jan-06-14  hangingenprise: <phony> listening to nfl radio the lions are diffently intersted in ken winnsenhunt of s.d. his resume is that with established q.b. he has done well. probably misspelled his last name, but you get the idea.

as your pal travis states it is never too early to talk football!

Jan-06-14  Jim Bartle: My mistake, it was the #3 and #4 picks. I'm still pretty sure Miami was going to pick Griese and anger local fans. This was the better choice. Griese was great, and while Spurrier had his moments he was far from a great quarterback.

The funny thing is the Niners already had a great quarterback with John Brodie, but didn't realize it. Rather than taking a QB they could have taken a defensive player like Alan Page or George Webster. Page would have become an SF legend. The linebacker Willie Lanier was also in that draft, but no team recognized he was going to be great.

As a lifelong 49er fan, it's frustrating to watch Seattle QB Russell Wilson. He is the perfect SF QB, like Montana or Young, and they passed on him.

You've got to love the headline: <"Drives Into Stands Frequently Lead to Long Ball Games."> I wonder if the pun was intentional.

By the way, the pitching change pictured occurred in the third inning, and Sturdivant was not the starter, but the Yankees' fourth pitcher of the game.

Jan-07-14  Shams: <JB> <I would definitely bet a large amount on FSU now to guarantee winning money.>

Yup. Did you read the article? He decided to be a true gambler. Terrible decision.

<When Skiba went public with his ticket last month, many fans contacted him on Twitter to offer advice. Most told Skiba that if they were him, they would place a sizable bet against Auburn to guarantee a payday.

Skiba had planned on doing exactly that. But as Monday's game approached, he backed off. With Florida State becoming more and more of a favorite, it meant that Skiba would have to bet even more money against Auburn to balance out the action.

So after consulting with his high school buddy, accountant Brian Burnett, who is an Alabama alum, the two made the trip to Las Vegas for the game but decided to let the bet ride.>

Jan-07-14  Jim Bartle: I won't be hiring that guy as my accountant.
