 | | OhioChessFan: I was impressed with Auburn. Great game plan and they were the better team. If I'd bet the game I'd have layed the points and then some. I thought it'd be FSU in a total blowout. It wasn't that long ago those 2 teams would not have met but would have played in 2 different bowls and then voters would have decided the champion. For all the cries about the BCS, at least they got a real championship game scheduled almost every year. |

 | | WannaBe: Jack Morris have the chance to be the third player elected to the HoF on last year of eligibility, (15th try). Who, are the other two? |
| Jan-08-14 | | hangingenprise: life is just a game: the red wings are serious!
or red wings vs blackhawks!! |

Jan-08-14
 | | perfidious: Maddux, Glavine and Thomas all make the Hall, with Biggio a (very) near miss: http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on... |
| Jan-08-14 | | Jim Bartle: But Maddux and Glavine are still frustrated that the chicks dig Thomas. Biggio just missed. Must be frustrating. But he must have been hurt with the way he chased the money, jumping from team to team. |
| Jan-08-14 | | Jim Bartle: I wouldn't vote for him, but why is Gary Sheffield not even on the ballot? 500 homers, .290 average, 1600 RBIs. In his case (this time seriously) I think he's largely forgotten because he bounced around so much. |
Jan-08-14
 | | perfidious: <Jim>: Sheffield will first become eligible next year, his last year as a player being 2009. Doesn't get any easier for those who missed, come '15, as two mortal locks take their first turn: Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez. |
Jan-08-14
 | | WannaBe: * denotes player that I would vote for. (Max 10 per ballot, as per HoF voting rule) Class of 2015 Rich Aurilia, Aaron Boone, Paul Byrd, Tony Clark, Carlos Delgado, David Dellucci, Jermaine Dye, Alan Embree, Darin Erstad, Kelvim Escobar, Cliff Floyd, Nomar Garciaparra, Brian Giles, Tom Gordon, Eddie Guardado, Randy Johnson*, Mark Loretta, Pedro Martinez, Ramon Martinez, Doug Mientkiewicz, Kevin Millar, Troy Percival, B.J. |
| Jan-08-14 | | Jim Bartle: <perfidious> Oops.
But it's funny. In career stats Frank Thomas and Sheffield are very similar, except Thomas has a slightly higher OBP. Plus Sheffield played in the field, and was an excellent outfielder. Yet for me, and I suspect for most, Thomas is clearly is a Hall of Famer and Sheffield is not. |
| Jan-08-14 | | Jim Bartle: <Wannabe> You'd vote for Jorge Posada but not for Pedro Martinez or Mariano Rivera? |
Jan-08-14
 | | WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> Hey, I am always sympathetic to those who have crouch all the time. =) Pedro Martinez is a funny one, in my opinion. Saw him with the Dodgers, of course, and then the Delino DeSheild trade, and saw him with Boston. He just didn't impress me that much, don't know why. Maybe I was spoiled... |
| Jan-08-14 | | Shams: <WannaBe> Who the @#$% are you voting for over Ken Griffey Jr.!?? |
Jan-08-14
 | | WannaBe: If Junior wasn't hurt so often and played, he'd definitely be first ballot HoF. |
Jan-08-14
 | | OhioChessFan: Griffey is definitely first ballot. But he's definitely not All Century. A solid HOFer but no way in the stratosphere most people seem to believe. |
| Jan-08-14 | | Shams: Well, I agree that his being injured keeps him out of the Hall of Stratospherians. But he's 6th all-time on the HR list despite being injured. Heck, he out-dingers today's inductee Frank Thomas by more than 100. And he put together a decade of impeccable defense. Have the words "Frank Thomas" and "defense" ever appeared in the same sentence before? |
| Jan-08-14 | | Jim Bartle: Martinez went 134-53 over a nine-year period. Hard to ignore that. Griffey: 630 home runs. He'll stroll into the HOF.
He was an all-time great with Seattle in the 90s, then a solid All-Star but a step lower with Cincinnati in the 2000s. |

Jan-09-14
 | | WannaBe: Washington Redskins hired J. Gruden as their next head coach! |
Jan-09-14
 | | Phony Benoni: 2015: Randy Johnson is a lock. Pedro Martinez probably first ballot, John Smoltz will have to wait unless there's is a strong Tinker-Evers-Chance outbreak. Biggio is the only holdover with a good shot. And a bit of wistfulness for Nomar Garciaparra; he looked like a sure-fire HOFer for a few years. 2016: I would bet just about anything on Griffey making it first ballot, especially with a weak field. Trevor Hoffman probably gets in eventually, and Billy Wagner will get some votes. 2017: Ivan Rodriguez, probably. Don't see a strong bet elsewhere; Vladimir Guerrero is borderline, and Manny Ramirez has issues. 2018: Chipper Jones on good press, but I don't know if I'd vote for him. Jim Thome will suffer the DH discount. Hideki Matsui is intriguing; never discount a Yankee. Johnny Damon and Omar Vizquel with get some votes. A very weak field. 2019: Why do we bother waiting for Rivera? Andy Pettitte will get strong consideration, deserved or not, but he's not on my list. Sheffield should have a better chance than he will get. Numbers-wise, he stacks up well enough, but there were reasons he kept moving around that had nothing to do with the stats. |
| Jan-09-14 | | Jim Bartle: I don't think Smoltz will make it, falls just short. Biggio will make it next year. Ivan Rodriguez will make it after a year or two. Ramirez definitely has the numbers, but too much strangeness plus drug suspension will probably keep him out. Plus he was a terrible fielder. Chipper Jones will get in, maybe not the first year. Thome, as you say, has the hitting but the DH time doesn't help. But he played first base for a long time. Rivera, of course, is a lock.
Sheffield has no chance, nor should he. |
Jan-09-14
 | | WannaBe: If/When Chipper gets in, will his plaque say "Larry Jones" ?? |
Jan-09-14
 | | Phony Benoni: <George Herman (Babe) Ruth> couldn't beat the rap, so I doubt <Larry Wayne (Chipper) Jones> will. http://i.i.cbsi.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim//... |
Jan-09-14
 | | WannaBe: http://espn.go.com/college-football... Another coach/school that I am not going to root for. |
| Jan-09-14 | | Jim Bartle: Your two major college coaches: Petrino and Pitino. A real source of pride. Petrino's the one who had an affair with a low-level secretary in the athletic department at Arkansas and then promoted her to some top spot on his staff. |
| Jan-09-14 | | Shams: What's the knock against Pitino? If being drawn to crazy women is a crime, the line to the lockup forms behind me, fellas. |
