Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Mar-06-14  Travis Bickle: Phony on a more serious note, I remembered why I gave up correspondence chess. I sac'd my N for two pawns to open my opponents King up. I've tried approximately 1.3 billion possibilities and after blurred vision has set in I still can't find the winning moves...

P.S. How come I couldn't have been born like Bobby Fischer, ya know where ya play yourself & play equally strong for both sides and usually always win? ; P

LIFE Master AJ: Someone recently sent me a CT. (e-mail) The other day, after I got rid of all the spam, I had around 70+ chats. (People ask me all kind of questions. I often get asked - by people from countries like India - "Did you know / play Bobby Fischer?" I also get a lot of requests for free lessons. Or someone has their favorite player/game, and want me to make a web page for it.)

Not a rated tournament, either it was quick-chess, or maybe even a five-minute tournament ... played quite a number of years ago.

The reason I am telling you this? We both played in this event. I was TDY (Temp duty assignment) to an Air Force Base in your neck of the woods, and I played in a lot of side events, but could not find time to play in the biggie. (U.S. Open)

I am thinking about making a copy. If I can get a few people to verify it, 20+ years ago, then I might post it on one of my web pages ... mostly as a curiosity piece / little slice of chess history.

LIFE Master AJ: << <Life Master AJ> <I'm afraid you'll have to come up with some more details about any blitz or quick tournament we both played in; it doesn't ring a bell with me. <I didn't play much competitive blitz or quick because I didn't enjoy them, probably because I was a compulsive walker during my games. Just sitting there made me too nervous.

<Mar-07-14 <LIFE Master AJ>: <It was 1977 ... the scan he sent me was very dirty and smudged, he promised to mail me a cleaner copy. >>>>>>

LIFE Master AJ: Of course the guy may not ever follow it up ...

So many times, I have seen stuff (like that) in my emails.

Do you know how many times I get asked for free lessons? (More than I care to count.)

Do you know how many times people have told me that they like my stuff? I ask them to contribute, and they never do. (Or so it seems.)

Another repetitive peeve: Someone asks me to annotate a game. (Their favorite.) I always respond with something like: "It's a nice game but" ... Then I say: "If you would lay some of the groundwork, and do a really thorough analysis, then I might consider it." They promise me that they will. Of course, 99% of the time, they never lift a finger.

To show just how many e-mails I get, and how many times they ask the same question ... like "Play me a postal game. "I won't use an engine, but I promise I will destroy you." (It's hard to take these seriously.)

I have about 10-15 PRE-WRITTEN responses. (Like, if they ask me for a postal game.) I am playing several right now. One is an Indian fellow and his son - I think that the Dad told me he is a doctor. (Their play is somewhat poor, but I give them hints, ideas and feedback nearly every move.) I have also promised to analyze the game pretty thoroughly when we get done. Just about every move, I give them one game to look at and discuss what I think is the key idea.

I could barely read the scan, I just saw my (last) name, but your name was on there too. (Moody, David) If it is the tournament that I am thinking of, I was winning easily in the key game, but wound up <stupidly> hanging my Queen and finishing fourth. (This was before I made master, I am pretty sure I was a 1900 or a 2000 in those days, the ratings were not on there.)

  LIFE Master AJ: Kibitzing Tricks

Looking for tips in updating game collections. (Tricks / extra's)

I know that putting something in "box-brackets" "[blah-blah-blah]" makes it both small and ITALICS.

How do you make something bold, as you did?

Mar-08-14
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: <Life Master AJ> A word of warning: this method works for me. Your computer system may have some kind of quirk that will not allow this to work. I don't understand such things, but thought I should mention that.

In collections at least, the usual bracketed that displays in kibitzing will show up as regualar bold text, without the brakets, if it begins a new paragraph and there is some regular text above it.

For instance, look at this collection:

Game Collection: US Open 1900, Excelsior = Northwestern Champ

The heading at the top, with no text above it, shows up with the bold inside brackets just as it does in kibitizing. The paragraph beginning "A meeting of representative..." is actually formatted the same way, but shows up in pure bold because there is regular text above it.

So, for this collection of yours:

Game Collection: "Chess-Games" >Problem of The Day< (2014)

If you enclosed the first paragrah in <> brackets, it will look like bold text in regular kibitzes. If you put <> brackets around the second paragraph, it will display as bold text without the brackets.

I never like to suggest improvements simply because I'm never sure if I'm right or not. After all they're your collections, not mine.

Knowing full well that Chicago cannot keep him, why would any team go for the services of an ageing player who was once great, but is losing ground to Father Time and has a monstrous cap hit to come?
