Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Aug-23-14  Shams: Wow, the Tigers burned their bullpen bad tonight and have a doubleheader tomorrow so they're desperate for arms. Apparently they're going to start young Buck Farmer in game one tomorrow…Mr. Farmer just made his AAA debut last week in Toledo, giving up eight runs in one third of an inning.

Phony Benoni: <Shams> And Verlander starts the second game, coming off the shoulder stiffness that caused him to miss the first start of his career. Anybody for Miguel Cabrera taking a turn on the mound?

Their only saving grace is that they were coming off two straight complete games. But this is going to be brutal today.

Aug-24-14  Jim Bartle: Strange 9th in a 1949 Sox-Yankee game:

<RED SOX 9TH: DiMaggio struck out; Pesky singled to center; Williams singled to right [Pesky to third]; Stephens walked [Williams to second]; Zarilla forced Pesky (right to catcher) [Williams to third, Stephens to second]; Doerr lined to right;>

Phony Benoni: Sounds like bad baserunning from Pesky:

<"Take the first game, for example. Boston there failed to score in the ninth on a hit with the bases loaded and one out.

"Johnny Pesky was on third at the time. Al Zarilla lined one to right field, and obvious hit and the fans roared. But Pesky must have thought that Cliff Mapes was going to catch the ball, for he went back and tagged third base before starting for home. He was caught at the plate, depriving the Sox of a tying run. Bobby Doerr then flied out and the Yanks won the game.">

Statesville Record & Landmark, Statesville, North Carolina, July 5, 1949.

Still, Mapes must have had a gun.

Aug-25-14  Jim Bartle: According to Halberstam, not the most reliable of sources, clouds had darkened the sky and Pesky wasn't couldn't see well. Meanwhile Williams was running from second and almost ran up Pesky's back.

Supposedly the ump initially called Pesky safe when Berra didn't tag him, only changing when Yogi pointed out it was a force. Somehow I doubt that.

According to Halberstam, Doerr was sure his Game-ending "line out" was a homer but the wind brought it back.

I wonder if that's the only rightfield-to-home forceout in baseball history.

Phony Benoni: I can believe the umpire forgot the situation. It was very unusual, , though probably not unique. There must have been other instances with the outfield playing in and a slow base runner at third.

I'm wondering why Mapes threw to home. He couldn't possibly have known Pesky was holding up unless somebody on the field alerted him. Or was he trying to nab Zarilla, a catcher, at first base and made a wild over throw that happened to work out?

Aug-25-14  hms123: <Phony Benoni>

From the <PB> archives:

<hms123: I used to watch Gus Triandos play in Baltimore. He was the slowest baseball player ever. I once saw him get thrown out at home by a mile (after tagging at third base) on a fly ball to the wall in centerfield. Come to think of it, Walt Dropo wasn't very fast either.>

Aug-25-14  Jim Bartle: I don't actually believe the ump called Pesky safe. Somebody probably told that to Halberstam and he bought it. Sports books are full of errors where the author doesn't check what he's been told.

Mapes was apparently trying to throw out Williams, running from second. Halberstam doesn't say what happened with Williams exactly, just that he ended up on third.

Aug-30-14  Jim Bartle: Can anybody understand this double play from 1949? What about the infield fly rule? Berra tagged home and ran to third to tag a runner?

TIGERS 1ST: Campbell walked; Kolloway walked [Campbell to second]; Kell was hit by a pitch [Campbell to third, Kolloway to second]; Wertz hit into a double play to second [Kolloway out at third (second to catcher), Campbell stayed at third, Kell stayed at first]; Snuffy Stirnweiss dropped the infield fly; he threw the ball to Yogi Berra who stepped on HP and ran to 3B; after Berra tagged Don Kolloway the Yankees insisted this was a triple play but 3B umpire Red Jones ruled Stirnweiss dropped the ball intentionally; Evers singled to center [Campbell scored, Kell to second]; Groth grounded out (third to first);

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

Note that Tommy Byrne lost an 11-inning 4-hitter. Unfortunately he also walked 13 and hit one. He walked Detroit's first two hitters seven times.

WannaBe: I am afraid we won't see upsets like these anymore, now that strength of schedule will be considered when picking the 4-team playoff.

It will also hurt I-AA teams ability to raise money for other sports, especially with Title IX.

Three days after the announcement and McDonald stands accused? If he hit this woman, he should his change his name to Moe Rawn--talk about asking for it!

WannaBe: Bit of a fun box score thing today, SF-COL finished a game that was suspended on May 22nd, and the starting pitcher of that game for Giants was T. Hudson.

So, after that game was finished, the regularly scheduled game was played, and the starting pitcher for the Giants? T. Hudson. =)

Oh, yeah, we also had a combined no-no between PHI-ATL.
