Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

saffuna: Giants steal second in bottom of the eighth leading 4-0, with Bumgarner on deck. Safe at second, but I think it was an attempt to end the inning and get on with the ninth.

Penguincw: Damn, Mad Bum with that performance. The only hit he gave up was to Final Vote candidate Jake Lamb. He also gave up a walk to former All-Star Rickie Weeks Jr.

Game score was 98, but using Game Score 2.0, it was 104.

Well, the Dodgers are my favourite American MLB team, and it sucks that the Giants enter the All-Star break with a 6.5 game lead.

WannaBe: For as much (pitching) injuries LAD have had this year, they are very fortunate to have 4th best record in NL and only 6.5 behind SFG.

McCarthy just came back, Ryu didn't do good first game back from injury, and the patch work of Urias, A. Wood, and whoever was scheduled to pitch 3rd, 4th, 5th have barely kept the team afloat.

LAD 51-40, Kershaw 11-2, so in theory, if you discard Kershaw, LAD is no better than 0.500 team.

Wonder how Greinke's doing with ARZ. It's possible LAD would be sitting at 59, 60, possibly 61 wins if Zach hadn't fled to ARZ.

Penguincw: This reminds me of how MLB, whenever a batter hits a homerun with the bases loaded, instead of calling it a "grand slam", they call it a "Papa Slam", as in "Papa John's".

Speaking of changing words that shouldn't be changed, during the singing of Canada's national anthem, O' Canada, the singers (who are Canadian), changed the lyrics. Instead of singing "With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free.", they replaced it with "To our brothers and sisters all lives matter to the brave", in reference to, you know what.

http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/ml...

As a Canadian, sorry for that.

But on a serious note, anytime someone sabotages any national anthem like that, is unacceptable. I think it would be a good idea to keep sports away from politics anyway, although it's kinda hypocritical I said that, 'cause that's what I'm kinda doing...

Question for you guys. I knew the game was being held in San Diego (an NL team), with the AL being the home team for this game. But looking at Wikipedia, the NL will host <4> straight All-Star games (2015-18). I thought this could be because the AL must've hosted consecutive All-Star games recently, but that hadn't happened since 1961-62.

I think Petco Park is a great park, but TB, OAK and TOR (AL) have waited longer than SD for an All-Star game, and LAD, MIA and WSH have waited longer than SD (NL) for an All-Star game.

Oh, question. Why is it being held in San Diego?

Jul-12-16

WannaBe: MLB decided to have San Diego to host the game, but to keep with tradition of alternating NL/AL as home team (instead of being dictated by stadium or league designation of the host team), AL is designated home for 2016.

Next year, NL will be "home", and 2018 AL will be "home". Test Monday.

WannaBe: TB, sorry, no offense, but that's worse than Seattle Concrete Kingdome (Google it). Indoors, carpet, bad, bad, bad... (So I've heard from various broadcasters)

Oakland, you don't want to go there, plumbing clog and backed up (google it), stadium's old, old, old. Plus it's really on an earthquake fault. Don't go there.

Toronto. That's a great stadium, hotel right in the outfields, you can watch people making out, or doing the hanky-panky (google it)!

In my opinion, MLB should designate Toronto (or Montreal) as dual rotating All-Star Game host city. Plus the fans in Montreal will get another chance to ask: "Why do baseball players carry a hockey puck in their back pocket?" (Google it).

WannaBe: ESPN Radio announcers have finally asked the 'real' question.

Should the wave to clock-wise, or counter-clock? (For you non-Americans, that would be anti-clock)

Apparently the fans in SD are doing it clock-wise, because the announcer said it looks weird to him.

Whenever we do the wave at Dodgers Stadium, it's always anti-clock-wise. (And I intentionally stand up 3 seconds behind the wave, just because I'm Bugs. =))

I mentioned to my Giants friends that when I go to LAD game, we always do the wave and beach balls. I've never seen the wave at any SFG game, much less beach balls.

Penguincw: < WannaBe: [Tampa Bay Rays] >

Not a fan of either ballparks, but hopefully TB's stadium is a good argument for bringing the Rays up to Montreal.

< [Oakland] >

If someone asked me to name what I think is the worst ballpark in MLB, it would be that coliseum. The best IMO is Fenway.

Of course, I wasn't really considering stadium or market of those cities, just merely considering how long it's been since a team/city has hosted the mid-summer classic.

< [TORONTO] >

Thanks. :) I've actually been up to the hotel before. I know a guy who knows the guy who apparently holds the top position (so like president or CEO) when it comes to organizing food and all at the Rogers Centre. About once a year, he would personally give free tickets to a Jays' game (100 deck, not nosebleeds) and this card that entitles you to unlimited free food, but he hasn't done it since 2013, which is "coincidentally" the last time I went to a Jays' game. :)

One time, the food guy showed me a tour of Rogers Centre, which included a view of the field at the hotel. He then mentioned "Screw the tickets, this is where we're watching the game". I then got comfortable, but about 5 minutes later, he said "Just kidding, get up." :p

WannaBe: <OhioChessFan> I then have to respectably disagree with you. I've always found the wave to a great fun. (See Naked Gun I)

And at LAD, it always start at left field pavilion and after a few tries, third base fans pick it up, then it goes to home plate, eventually it goes go first base then right field pavilion.

If the wave dies by home plate, fans boo, it's kinda verbal reminder to others that "Hey!! Wave going here!!"

Love the history of the wave (google it!!) where it started at U of W and it went up/down the stand, instead of going in a circular motion.

All good baseball fun. =))
