So what's your excuse???

saffuna: I think I read a story in Sports Illustrated years ago about Long Beach Poly and all the great athletes who had come out of that high school. Maybe it's Long Beach that's rich in athletes, not any particular high school.

WannaBe: <saffuna> Long Beach Poly is a little bit like USC, they excel in football, basketball, and possibly track & field.

Wilson, on the other hand had great success in other Sports, tennis, golf, swimming, water polo, baseball, softball, gymnastics.

The baseball team was awarded national champion a few years back.

saffuna: I see Wilson has major leaguers Bobby Grich, Bob Lemon and Bud Daley. No tennis players on their list. Poly had just one I saw in tennis, but that was Billy Jean King.

Poly also has Cameron Diaz, who played golf in "There's Something About Mary."

WannaBe: Poly also had Willie McGinnest, biggest baddest dude I'd ever seen on the basketball court.

I was the manager for basketball for 3 years there (before it went to 4-years format) and man, Willie was huge. Once during warm-ups he ran by me as I was standing by the scorers' table tossing out balls to my team. Compared to this scrawny little/young Chinaman. He was like Wow!

Penguincw: Yay, Dodgers are tied for 1st for the first time since May/14. On that day, Kazmir pitched for the Dodgers. Today, Kazmir gets the start.

If the postseason began today, there could be some trouble, as (under the rules of the 2nd wild card) they would play Game 163 in SF. The winner would head to WSH for Game 1 of the NLDS, while the loser hosts MIA in the WC game, the winner of that game will head to CHC for Game 1 of the NLDS (so many extra, un-necessary games). Under the 1994-2011 format, it would be CHC-LAD, WSH-SF, no extra games needed.

Same problem with TOR and BAL right now, both tied in the standings (though BAL has a better winning %). If the postseason began today, TOR would host BAL, winner goes to CLE for Game 1 of the ALDS, loser hosts BOS for the Wild Card game, with the winner of that game going to TEX for Game 1 of the ALDS. 1994-2011, just TEX-BAL, CLE-TOR.

Personally, I don't like the 2nd wild card spot. I rather have it only 4 teams make it, or 8 teams, not 5. But if 4 teams were to make it, abolish the rule saying 2 teams from the same division can't faceoff in the LDS.

WannaBe: <Penguincw> Lots of games left, plenty of time for the whole LAD (starters) pitching staff to go on the DL.

With Kershaw gone, none of the pitchers have lasted (long) into a game, that bull-pen will be depleted by mid-September, if not earlier.

You're eligible? Right?? I'll pull some strings and see if LAD will sign a lefty from Canada. =))

Damn, LAD 3rd in the majors in bullpen use, behind CIN and OAK.

Awesome, I always wanted to pitch in the majors for the Dodgers.

I hope they sign my ex-video game player though. He can throw a knuckleball at 60 mph and a fastball at 100 mph (along with an intermediate curveball and changeup at 80 mph). I'm sure that's bound to mess up hitter's timing and provoke poor contact. ;)

Mike Royko rocked. He had a column back in the late 80's maybe, bemoaning kids walking around with Walkmans 24/7 and mocking the inevitable stupidity they were sowing. Of course it's gotten much worse since then, but it annoys me to death too. Molly Ivins always made me want to vomit.

saffuna: Another plus for Ivins, then. A brilliant writer who punched holes everywhere, especially on Texas politics. The collection "Molly Ivins Can't Say That, Can She?" is full of great articles.
