| Jul-20-18 | | morfishine: <Dr Winston OBoogie> Please do. I just wanted you to know I picked England after a careful and meticulous research over a grueling 3 month period. This was no joke. I was not just trying to appease the England lovers. I was proud of my pick and it was hard to make over my beloved German team! Well 4th in the World is not too shabby and one of my predictions did in fact come to fruition: Kane won the Golden Boot and what a great player he is

How are you holding up? |

 | | WannaBe: <thegoodanarchist> Holding, and still holding (pattern)... =)) Lots of phone screening calls, nothing solid, no face to face interview with private industry, talked to dozen of recruiters. Got Monday interview @Sacramento with Cal Dept of Public Health Tuesday interview @Napa with Cal Dept of Fire and Forestry (The guys out there right now fighting Redding fires) Wednesday interview @Susanville with same department (but different counties) Got a call earlier today with a recruiter regarding a position just a few miles north of where I live, apparently this company have been interviewing for month and not been able to find anyone. Will see what happens... Side note, some of these Job Descriptions (JD) are far out there, borderline unrealistic. I'd see one where I match up 80-85% and get a rejection email. Blaaah!! |

I think most companies just keep open some position with a "dream" description, hoping for the God Emperor of that field to show up and apply for a career which he himself created. <Holding, and still holding (pattern)... =))Lots of phone screening calls, nothing solid, no face to face interview with private industry, talked to dozen of recruiters.> I recommend stern self-critique. What is not working? Can you go 180 degrees from it? Do you need to go that far from it? I used this technique thrice, with a 66.67% success rate. <Got Monday interview @Sacramento with Cal Dept of Public Health> I humbly ask, may I give you some advice?
If yes, Go with outrageous optimism and unrealistic self-confidence. This works! They don't know you are not the God Emperor of your field. Show them you are all that. <Tuesday interview @Napa with Cal Dept of Fire and Forestry (The guys out there right now fighting Redding fires)> If I may be so bold, I counsel the same as before, only with a humongous serving of empathy for those firefighters, along side the confidence and optimism. <Wednesday interview @Susanville with same department (but different counties)> When driving South from Portland, OR, through Modoc National Forest, destination Reno, NV, there are some very desolate miles after hitting the OR/CA border, until one arrives in Susanville. Fortunately, you will be driving North and won't experience that. <Got a call earlier today with a recruiter regarding a position just a few miles north of where I live, apparently this company have been interviewing for month and not been able to find anyone. Will see what happens...> Confidence and optimism might just win the day! Wouldn't that be a score, to get a position a few miles from home? |

| Aug-14-18 | | Caissanist: Just saw your update about your job search. This sounds like pretty blatant age discrimination to me--lots of tech companies have an "up or out" attitude towards workers over 40. The unrealistic job requirements are probably there so they can discriminate against people based on age and other illegal things. You probably should get rid of anything on your resume that indicates your age, and I would definitely look favorably on the government jobs. Government agencies tend to be more open to older workers, since they are more likely to be using older technologies. |

Then drop the eminent domain maneuver, and assess the buildings for the amount Apple argued they are worth |

<MannBee> I'm no fan of <facebook> but that is government meddling in private enterprise and it is <Stalinism>. Why can't the government keep its nose out of private enterprise? Every ad ever made is "targeted" towards some group. This is not unjust discrimination, this is called the "ad business" and if they don't like it they should take a time machine and go back to <Stalin's Russia>. Also, why don't these social justice meddlers take a break. Do they have to be oppressive whiners every single day? Can't they take a few days off now and again? |

Hi, yes I am. I owe you an apology, a big one at that and about two years late. Judging by the time of the post that was around the time when I had my final exams at training to become a chef. Went well, love my job, though demanding and long hours. Hope you are well as well, and please accept my sincere apologies. Take care.
Pf course it's sad to come back and then Daniel dies ... chessgames.com is his legacy. I really hope it continues on and on ... |

|
| Aug-23-18 | | thegoodanarchist: <WannaBe: So, apparently there is a remake of Papillon. The original had McQueen and Hoffman. Remake will hit theatres Friday. Think I will wait for DVD...>
True facts:
Henri Charrière (author of <Papillon>) was a smoker. Steve McQueen, the actor who portrayed Papillon in the movie, was a smoker. "Smoke Breaks" figure prominently in the book <Papillon>. Sometimes, in the worst of circumstances, it is his only form of pleasure in life. The original movie, <Papillon>, was filmed back when smoking (even indoors!) was nearly ubiquitous. For example, the movie <All the President's Men> from 1976 shows in one scene the characters in the WAPO news room, at their desks, smoking cigarettes. Many restaurants were just beginning to feature "No Smoking" sections, where people could, by special request, be seated to avoid the main sections where everyone smoked. And the point of all of this?
There are NO SCENES AT ALL of Papillon smoking in the original movie <Papillon>! What's up with that??? |
|
| Aug-23-18 | | thegoodanarchist: <There are NO SCENES AT ALL of Papillon smoking in the original movie <Papillon>!> Or so I've heard! It's been too long since I saw the movie myself, so I really don't remember. |
|
Aug-23-18
 | | WannaBe: Just re-watched the original 3 days ago, dont remember any smoking scenes. Necer read the book, so I dont know if tobacco was even available to prisoners. He did 2 and then 5 years of solitary for his escape attempts, too. So again, not sure if tobacco was available. Since he was in solitary and not working, maybe trading with guards was not possible. Funniest thing while watching that movie, when he was locked up, I keep expecting a glove and a baseball. (The Great Escape) =)) |
|
| Aug-23-18 | | thegoodanarchist: <He did 2 and then 5 years of solitary for his escape attempts, too. So again, not sure if tobacco was available.> The book is a great read. Very easy, a page-turner. There is a lot more going on in the book, it covers everything in the movie but with more detail. And it covers a lot that wasn't in the movie, with good detail. And there is a LOT of talk about smoking in the book. It's prominent. That said, the book was highly embellished. Overly dramatized. Much of it was pure fiction. |
