Apr-07-09  Dredge Rivers: I'm Hungary for this tournament!

P.S. <<<<<FIRST!>>>>>

Apr-07-09  Bobsterman3000: They should require the Barcza opening for each game...
Apr-07-09  Dredge Rivers: Or, the winner gets a free year's supply of goulash!
Apr-07-09  TheChessGuy: Mmmm, gulyas!!
Apr-07-09  Dredge Rivers: <TheChessGuy> Are you any relation to Bill Nye, the Science Guy? :)
Apr-07-09  PhilFeeley: Barcza opening? 1. g4 maybe?
Apr-07-09  WhiteRook48: Why so little games on the first day (only 6)

Sneaky: <WhiteRook48: Why so little games on the first day (only 6)> Well there are 12 players, and it takes 2 people to play a game of chess, what's 12 divided by 2 again? Ummm.... carry the one... uhhh.... yeah, it's 6. That's right, 6 is the number. How about that.
Apr-07-09  Dredge Rivers: <Sneaky> Stop! You're going too fast for me! :)
Apr-07-09  veigaman: David Recuero is a young spanish talent.
Apr-07-09  Bobsterman3000: The "Barcza opening" is when white plays 1. nf3 2. g3 3. Bg2 and 4. 0-0 with the specific goal of making black play his "own moves" rather than rely on common theory. Obviously, the opening can transpose into many other named openings.

Yasser Seirawan suggests it as a way of throwing a curveball at another player who excels at theory. Of course, he doesn't suggest it as a good opening at the Super-GM level since it is regarded as somewhat passive.

Here's a discussion of it from another forum:

Apr-08-09  WhiteRook48: <Dredge Rivers: Stop! You're going too fast for me!> OK. How about 12 O marks separated into 2 groups?
O O O O O O O O O O O O
Divide that in two and you get two groups of six, or O O O O O O and O O O O O O. You see? Or is that too fast for you either?
Apr-09-09  PhilFeeley: Disaster reported today on TWIC:

<The II Gedeon Barcza Memorial was supposed to take place in Budapest 6th-17th April 2009. However after just one round, the event was cancelled. Eduardas Rozentalis says that the organiser Gabor Pali didn't have the money to pay the Ramada Resort Hotel nor the players. According to Rozentalis after two days of hospitality and patience by the managers of the hotel, in spite of not being paid any money, they eventually refused to believe further promises and the tournament was cancelled. After that, according to Rozentalis, the players were promised their expenses, but several deadlines were exceeded and on April 8th the players had no choice but to book flights at their own expense and leave Budapest. >

What's in a name? Barcza, Benko, King's Indian Attack. I suppose Benko is just 1. g3? I think Barcza originally used it as a delayed Reti.

In MCO 10, Larry Evans says this: " The Barcza System, a son of the Reti, carries the idea of non-committal moves a step further. White mobilizes his entire King's side with N-KB3, P-KN3, B-N2, 0-0 before he touches a center pawn. Black has a vaiety of systems but as soon as he shows his hand White transposes into the most favorable opening available. A subjective yet subtle system"

When I played this for a couple of years I most often got a French setup from Black - ....d5, ....e6, ...Nf6, .... c5, .... Nc6 which makes is all a King's Indian Attack. White gets a nice attack unless Black plays aggressively on the Queen side.

Apr-09-09  acirce: Yeah Benko is 1.g3. Never heard about the Barcza opening but I guess Bobsterman is right.
Apr-10-09  NyP: The so-called Barcza Memorial

I'm really sad about this tournament. Gedeon Barcza was one of the greatest personalities of chess. He played in seven Olimpic games and also was a great teacher of chess - and a real gentleman.

And now from the homepage of the Hungarian Chess Federation:

"The Hungarian Chess Federation announces that it has never approved, supported, promoted any so-called Barcza Memorial tournament or provided any financial support for such a tournament to its organizer Gabor Pali. ... the Presidential Board of the Hungarian Chess Federation ordered yesterday a full-scale investigation of the situation and decided to take all the appropriate measures against Gabor Pali, possibly including a police information action"

"The Barcza Gedeon chess club dernounces Pali's action and declares it as a private effort of a cheater"

Apr-10-09  Katu: I'm sorry to say that, but it's typical Hungarian organizing stuff.

p.s. I'm Hungarian.

Apr-10-09  Eyal: Ris and Postny about what happened there: http://www.chessvibes.com/reports/b...

The following passage seems to provide a good impression of Gabor Pali's "organizational" skills:

<After all what happened, it was decided to put up a list with all expenses the players made and forced Pali to sign himself. As he couldn't escape he signed of course, and promised me he would pay me in the morning at the airport. At 07.45 AM I met him together with GMs Gopal and Rozentalis. Pali told me he transferred the money to my account, which was absolutely impossible, since the banks are closed until 8 AM.

I asked him to pay me cash, so we went to the local currency office. His willingness to pay me cash is already enough proof that he did not send the money to my bank account! Coming there he explained that he didn't have his card with him, so he couldn't pay me cash.>

Apr-10-09  Granny O Doul: 1.e4 e6 2.d4 c5 where White plays 3.d5 is sometimes called the "Larsen-Barcza defense", or maybe the "Barcza-Larsen".
Apr-10-09  timhortons: http://susanpolgar.blogspot.com/200...

<Tournament being cancelled is absolutely a pity, but what about the expenses all the players made? For me personally it means that I lost around 1000 euro's for playing only 1 game. Most of the other players only lost their flight ticket and some starting fee. During the first 2 days GMs Almasi and Sokolov asked many times Mr. Pali to pay their starting fee, but every time he found a bad excuse to delay the payment.>

Apr-10-09  Dredge Rivers: It figures! I finally get the first kibitz in, and it turns out to be a garbage tournament!

Next time, they should call it the Lajos Portisch Memorial! :)

Apr-10-09  timhortons: I cant believe this thing happens.
Apr-10-09  Dredge Rivers: Why can't we have a tournament like this in the US? After all, we also have dead chess players!

Next year, let's have the Sammy Reshevsky Memorial right here in Las Vegas! Who's with me?
