Aug-10-09  aragorn69: Thanks, <cg>.
Aug-10-09  Nezhmetdinov: I'm with him: thanks chaps!
3-3 at the moment and my extreme nationalist fervour and hot blood cry for victory over that other maverick northen European nation the long-headed Dutch! It's exciting.
Aug-10-09  WhiteRook48: not sure who to root for
Aug-10-09  Dredge Rivers: <WhiteRook48> I'm rooting for NL. The National League hasn't won much of anything lately! :)
Aug-10-09  6.Be3: I am not rooting for NDL! Nige is still quite good

WannaBe: It always disappoints me, that the tournament is Scheveningen Match, and only 1 game (so far) Adams vs Van Wely, 2009 follows that line...

offramp: I would like to see a Scheveningen tournament played in Scheveningen, and every game has to be a Sicilian Scheveningen.
Aug-11-09  Timeline: and have Ruy Lopez festival where every game starts with 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5
Aug-11-09  achieve: Good grief, <Nigel> is smashing the Dutch to Pieces!!

Looking forward to the rubber with <Jan Timman>...

Aug-11-09  Nadark: I think offramp is really off ramp, how do u expect them to play a tournament using only one variation of the Sicilian
Aug-11-09  drnooo: This is a real mind burner, but let me see, oh yeah, the one guy he plays the shev as white and then as black, just as everyone else in the tourney does. And voila, every game is a shev sicilian. Maybe even with the stipulation that all games have to go 40 moves and on any draws the guy who uses more time loses. That would cut down a lot on the 1/2 points, turn them into real fights.
Aug-11-09  drnooo: Or even better, for all of you out there that detest draws, how about a no draw tourney: in any game that is drawn, the one who used the most time is the loser.
Aug-12-09  minasina: <achieve: Good grief, <Nigel> is smashing the Dutch to Pieces!! Looking forward to the rubber with <Jan Timman>...>

You just wait. :) Timman is playing in the other event: Howard Staunton Memorial (2009)

Aug-12-09  PinnedPiece: After 5 rounds, tied 12.5 to 12.5 team points.

Whew!

Aug-12-09  waustad: <achieve>You may have to settle for the draw between Short and van Wely.
Aug-13-09  Octavia: the best ever book written on chess was DRAW by Heidenfeld. Unfortunately, i can't get it anymore : (
Aug-13-09  thatsgameboys: The competition is still even, now at 15-15 after 6 rounds. Results from the sixth round:

GM Van Wely GM Adams 0.5 - 0.5
GM Werle GM Short 0 - 1
GM Smeets GM Howell 1 - 0
GM Sokolov GM McShane 1 - 0
GM L'Ami GM Jones 0 - 1

Short wins again (!) to have 4 wins and 2 draws out of 6. Gawain Jones (who had 1 draw and 4 losses in the first 5) gets his first win this round.

Aug-14-09  achieve: <minasina> <Waustad> I stand corrected ;) I noticed too in my youthful exuberance... Though I still <DO> look forward to the Nigel/Timman rubber, albeit in a different tournament. ;)
Aug-14-09  Nezhmetdinov: Short - Timman battles are amongst the most interesting and fun-filled of rivalries, gives Gligoric-Petrosian a run for its money - favourite (non-WC) match-ups anyone?

Domdaniel: <Octavia> Yep, Wolfgang Heidenfeld was an excellent writer and an underrated player - he won both the Irish and South African championships several times in the 1950s and 60s, yet never made the IM title. His other main book - Lacking the Master Touch - makes light of this 'failure', but it must have hurt. There were far fewer opportunities for norms in those days.

Ironically, his son Mark Heidenfeld is an IM. I don't think he's a significantly stronger player than his father was.

The 'Draw' book, BTW, might be more readily available in German, as <Grosse Remispartien>. But I'd also expect an English-language copy to surface somewhere, sooner or later.

Aug-17-09  Octavia: <domdaniel> thanks for drawing my attention to the book in German. I'll put it on my xmaslist! It's always nice to look forward to something!
Aug-17-09  WinstonSilcott: Does the team prize money get split between the players according to how many points each player finished on?
Aug-17-09  hand banana: is this fide rated?

if it is, short is getting close to 2700 elo

Aug-17-09  aragorn69: Any news of the last round results? Anybody in London? Or anybody rich enough to have paid the five quids they have the cheek to ask for the live feed??
Aug-17-09  returnoftheking: <favourite (non-WC) match-ups anyone?> Tal-Nezhmetdinov?
